[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all! [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter, currently named [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], is about four months old, and we’ve decided we need to change her name. We like the middle, but [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] just isn’t working for us. We’ve decided that we want her nickname (which we’ll call her almost all the time) to be [name_f]Ani[/name_f], pronounced [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-nee (NOT like [name_f]Annie[/name_f]). We need to come up with a full name for the nickname though, to match her twin sister, [name_f]Edith[/name_f] nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f]. Also needs to match with older brothers [name_u]Anderson[/name_u] ‘[name_m]Anders[/name_m]’ and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] ‘[name_u]Theo[/name_u]’. Full name needs to make the pronunciation of the nickname clear. Any thoughts?
Ones we’ve considered are:
[name_f]Ariana[/name_f] (Current favorite)
[name_u]Alani[/name_u] ([name_u]Love[/name_u] but doesn’t match with siblings)
[name_f]Elliana[/name_f] (Not a huge fan but it works)
[name_f]Annelise[/name_f] (don’t make pronunciation clear though)
I’m not sure if any name would make it very clear on pronunciation, honestly. The way I instinctively pronounce [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], [name_u]Alani[/name_u], [name_f]Elliana[/name_f], and [name_f]Annelise[/name_f] is with the “ah-nee” sound, like [name_f]Annie[/name_f], not “aw-nee.” They could be pronounced with more of an “aw” sound, especially [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], but it may not be everyone’s assumption.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite in general is [name_f]Elliana[/name_f], but with her sisters I like [name_f]Annelise[/name_f].
[name_u]Or[/name_u] what about:
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f] (I pronounce this closer to what I think you want for [name_f]Ani[/name_f], so it may be a good option?)
[name_f]Oriana[/name_f]
[name_f]Alondra[/name_f] (might be easier for the “aw” sound?)
Tiawna (again, might be better soundwise)
[name_f]Tatiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Briana[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
Anna
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Anika[/name_f]
[name_f]Anice[/name_f]
[name_f]Anise[/name_f]
Ariana nn [name_f]Ani[/name_f] is great!
Other ideas…
Anya - maybe not long enough?
[name_f]Mariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]
[name_u]Andrea[/name_u] - depends how you pronounce this one
[name_f]Anette[/name_f] - I really like this with [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and it’s not going to steer you down the [name_f]Annie[/name_f] pronunciation either, so maybe?
[name_f]Anita[/name_f]
I really like [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] and [name_f]Annelise[/name_f].
I think any -ana name could work:
[name_f]Liana[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Aviana[/name_f]
Also perhaps [name_f]Leilani[/name_f].
Ariana is lovely!
Liliana came to mind
In the vein of [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliana[/name_f], what about [name_f]Liliana[/name_f]? I think it goes beautifully with [name_m]Anders[/name_m], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], and [name_f]Edie[/name_f]’s full names, and lends itself easily to [name_f]Ani[/name_f]! I like [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] a lot, too, as well as [name_f]Annelise[/name_f]. [name_f]Annelise[/name_f] is possibly my favorite, but if you’re not sure, I think [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] or [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] would be nice.
A few other ideas:
Annelie/Anneli (Finnish (if I am remembering correctly!) name pronounced like onna-lee)
[name_f]Ana[/name_f]-[name_f]Sofia[/name_f]/Ana-[name_u]Maria[/name_u]/Ana-[name_f]Clara[/name_f]/Ana-[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]/Ana-[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] ([name_f]Ana[/name_f]-[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] is my personal favorite; [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Ana[/name_f]-[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] is brilliant, and [name_f]Ana[/name_f]-[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] easily lends to [name_f]Ani[/name_f])
[name_f]Christiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmanuelle[/name_f] (not really clear on the “ahn” sound but I think you could still use [name_f]Ani[/name_f] for it and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmanuelle[/name_f] are a sweet twinset!)
Good luck!
What about [name_f]Anya[/name_f]? I think that’s perfect with the nickname and [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
This would fit perfectly!!
I hear what you’re saying on not feeling [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] anymore, it’s great you’re putting a lot of thought into it. One thing I like about your [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Edith[/name_f] combo though is that they are twins but have completely different names. I really don’t like when people name twins things like [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] and [name_f]Karen[/name_f], [name_u]Jerry[/name_u] and [name_u]Terry[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] and [name_m]Brian[/name_m], etc. you get the idea there. The matchy-matchyness with them already being twins makes doing that even more over the top. That being said, you say you have already nicknamed [name_f]Edith[/name_f] to “[name_f]Edie[/name_f]”, so using a name where the intended nickname is “[name_f]Ani[/name_f]” gives it that same matchy feeling with [name_f]Edie[/name_f] & [name_f]Ani[/name_f] together. Maybe that doesn’t bother you, but it’s possible your kids may not like that as they get older and want to feel like they are their own separate people with distinct identities. [name_m]Just[/name_m] something to consider.
Also, if you don’t feel you love a name, like [name_f]Elliana[/name_f], don’t use it. [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t use something purely for a nickname, you want to feel like you love your child’s name which is why you’re here considering some other names in the first place, right? So go with your gut on whether you like something or don’t rather than trying to make it fit.
With your other suggestions - I see [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] as most people intuitively using the nickname [name_u]Ari[/name_u]. [name_f]Annelise[/name_f] will likely give her a nickname of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f], which you don’t want. As for [name_u]Alani[/name_u], or anything else you might like/love - don’t sweat making them match with siblings. Any name you choose will match, really, because they’re all your kids.
I’ll throw out some other suggestions with the letter A that don’t seem like they’d shorten to something that rhymes with [name_f]Edie[/name_f], just in case you do want them to sound different.
Ava
[name_f]Amaya[/name_f]
[name_u]Alexis[/name_u]
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]April[/name_f]
[name_f]Adriana[/name_f] or [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Ayanna[/name_f]
Ani is cute and matches well with [name_f]Edie[/name_f] without being too matchy matchy
Unfortunately I don’t think there is any ‘ann’ type name that is 100% said with an ‘awn’ pronunciation unless you go for [name_f]Dawn[/name_f] or [name_f]Fawn[/name_f]. But luckily it’s easy to correct people. For me names ending in ‘iana’ would be your best bet of getting the pronunciation you want (however even that depends on where you live)
Ariana, [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] (but I agree with the pp, if you don’t love it don’t use it) [name_f]Briana[/name_f], Lillana, [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], [name_f]Viviana[/name_f], [name_f]Oliana[/name_f]
A beautiful name that I feel might work for you is [name_f]Analia[/name_f]…
