What are some good full names for the nickname [name_u]Gay[/name_u]/[name_f]Gaye[/name_f]?
Any name starting with G- and having an A in there somewhere would work in my opinion, but it depends how strict you are with nicknames directly relating to the given name. Galilee/Galilea and Grace are more obvious due to the long AY sound, but Gabriela, Georgiana, Ginevra or Gisella could potentially work if you wanted them to.
I definitely think with Gay it needs to be a nickname for a longer full name, or used as a middle. Unfortunately, Gay, just like the once popular Dick, Woody, Pansy and Fanny, I feel is no longer usable today. Older people tend to pull off such names well due to most people understanding that they were common and appropriate names back in the day, but today, on a child…no such luck. It once had such a beautiful happy meaning…pity society went and effed that up with using it as an insult/homophobic slur (‘that’s/you’re so gay’).
My mother has gone by her middle name Gai her whole life (though is slowly starting to use her more unusual first more nowadays) and it never worried her. My older sister was given Gai as a middle too, and it doesn’t worry her so much, being in the middle, though she did get the odd smartass comment here and there, but she’s quick-witted and tended to throw back some brilliant retaliation and was never deeply affected by it (she’s 40 now). Using it in the middle might be something you could consider, and you could even call her Gay at home if you really wanted to?
I really like [name_f]Galilea[/name_f]. (:
Maybe even [name_f]Gaia[/name_f].
[name_f]Galayna[/name_f], [name_f]Gayla[/name_f], [name_f]Gayel[/name_f], [name_f]Gaynor[/name_f], [name_f]Gaynell[/name_f], Graycie?
I was going to suggest [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] (I love the name so much myself) but I really dislike it when pronounced [name_u]GAY[/name_u]-uh and if said [name_m]GUY[/name_m]-uh or GAH-yuh the nickname of [name_u]Gay[/name_u] wouldn’t work too well as it would totally confuse things and people would assume that your [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] was indeed said [name_u]GAY[/name_u]-uh.
[name_f]Galilea[/name_f] is gorgeous though, and [name_u]Gay[/name_u] could definitely work there. Have you considered spelling it [name_f]Gai[/name_f] (which would make more sense and look better as nickname for [name_f]Galilea[/name_f]), or does the Y play a big part in it for you?
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] (spelled in a variety of ways) would work!
I work with a lady called [name_f]Gaynor[/name_f] - only one I can think of. But, I would strongly advise against using [name_u]Gay[/name_u] anywhere in a child’s name - you’d just be setting them up for a life of torment in our now, often cruel, world. It may have worked in the past, but not in our modern society.
