First question: what is your favourite full name for the nn [name]Ella[/name]? I’m really loving it, and I like [name]Eleanor[/name], but would like some other ideas.
Also, how popular is [name]Ella[/name] really? I haven’t met any [name]Ella[/name]'s, but it’s pretty high in popularity according to official statistics etc. What are your experiences with [name]Ella[/name]?
Thanks. Any input would be much appreciated
P.S. My worry with [name]Eleanor[/name] is that it will be shortened to [name]Ellie[/name], and I really really dislike the nn [name]Ellie[/name]. Does [name]Ella[/name] work or would the natural nn for many people be [name]Ellie[/name]?
As far as nn’s go, you will ultimately decide what her nn is…if you call her [name]Ella[/name] in front of her teachers, friends, family, etc., others will catch on…and who care is if you have to correct someone a couple of times, right?
I know one [name]Ella[/name] who is 15 so I wouldn’t find it terribly popular on it’s own. Of course many names ending in -ella are popular and some of those girls may use the nn [name]Ella[/name]. I love [name]Eleanor[/name] b/c like [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Catherine[/name] there are so many great nn. My personal favorites are [name]Nell[/name] and [name]Nora[/name].
I do think that most people would generate [name]Ellie[/name] from [name]Eleanor[/name]. I do hear [name]Ella[/name] often among little girls and agree that it is likely a more common nn than full name although both are still growing in numbers.
I know many [name_f]Ella[/name_f]'s, it’s very popular. I’ve never though of shortening [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] to [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], the default nickname for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is [name_f]Ella[/name_f].
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] is lovely! I think it is perfect on its own, but my favorite long form for it is [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. Also, I recently discovered [name_f]Elora[/name_f], which I think is very elegant. Eleanora could work for you - the extra a on the end is a more natural nod to Ella.
Other ideas ~
Elara
Elsa
Eliana
Eliora
Eliza
(I know one Eleanor, three Ellie, two Elise, two Ella, and one Eliana. All the forms combine to make it pretty popular, but I love Ella. A more distinctive formal name could also help.)
I know 4 [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]'s called [name_f]Ella[/name_f] so as long she’s introduced as [name_f]Ella[/name_f] it tends to stick. Eleska is my favourite long name for [name_f]Ella[/name_f] (Eleska is a for, of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]), I also love [name_f]Ariella[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], Eleadora and [name_f]Elliana[/name_f].
I only know one [name_f]Ella[/name_f] I don’t think its that popular, I know a huge amount of children… I think its a fine nn for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], I had a cousin with that name, beautiful name, I think that nn would be pretty apparent, one of my kids is always very clear what they want to be called instead of a given name. Kids tell people. And in group situations you aren’t there for just write it on paperwork or a name tag. Its a non issue when it comes down to it… and when in doubt yes someone will be weird and impossible no matter what you name your child, like some random see them once a year person… we endless random nurses that apparently can’t pronounce things that are pretty clear just not common… I think you’ll be ok
