My grandmother’s name is [name]Gail[/name], and I love the idea of using [name]Gale[/name] for a son to honor her. I would likely use it as a middle name, but I’m kicking around the possibility for using it as a first. It skews masculine in my eyes, and it seems to be getting more press because of The Hunger Games (which I haven’t read).
Do you all think it might make a comeback for the boys?
Despite whether or not The Hunger Games brings [name]Gale[/name] back for boys, I’m wondering how your grandmother and son would feel about sharing a name. Can you imagine a guy telling his friends he has the same first name as his great-grandmother? I’m normally a big advocate of “gone girl” names for boys, but that just seems a little embarrassing.
Well, she’s in her nineties. By the time I have kids, she’ll likely be gone… I really just want to know if people think the name will make a comeback for guys.
I think [name]Gale[/name] for a boy is due for a comeback - there are barely any little girls named [name]Gail[/name] born anymore, so it isn’t like he’d be sharing the name with a bunch of girls in his class. In the middle especially I think it’s fine.
I think it would be all right. I (briefly) dated a boy in high school named [name]Gale[/name] and he was named after his father. This was only about ten years ago, before the Hunger Games was ever heard of. I think that the name is cute for a boy and its due for a comeback.
[name]Gale[/name] for a boy is cool, I don’t think it sounds too feminine. Few girls (or even women) are named [name]Gail[/name] these days. And [name]Gale[/name] is kind of like the boys name [name]Dale[/name], so it has a boyish sound to my ear.
My dad’s best friend is named [name]Gale[/name]. Since we get so many severe storms in [name]Florida[/name], kids here would think of gale force winds- so it’d be a strong, nature name. The only [name]Gale[/name]/[name]Gail[/name]/[name]Gayle[/name] I know are in their 50s and 60s so it’s not likely that he’d share the name with any classmates
[name]Galen[/name] has been a longtime favorite but I worry about the pronunciation. “[name]GAY[/name]-len” is more tease-worthy than “gale”
This is what I was going to say. I think [name]Gale[/name] sounds much more masculine than [name]Galen[/name]. Plus, [name]Galen[/name] sounds too much like [name]Aidan[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Greyson[/name], Gracen, etc. [name]Gale[/name] sounds a bit more distinctive. I also associate [name]Gale[/name] with stormy winds, so I think it is a strong name. I probably won’t ever use it because of the Hunger Games (just cause my husband and I didn’t really like that character), but I would love to see it on other little boys.
I don’t know it it’s because I equate [name]Galen[/name] with my uncle who’s pretty manly but I’ve never heard or thought of [name]Galen[/name] = gay. I think you would have just as much a risk with gale. Personally I wouldn’t worry about it but it’s probably not worth using if the possibility really bothers you.
