Gallagher: Too Shameless?

Husband likes it. I like the sound of it, too, because I think it has a quirky, inquisitive, happy sound, but I’m not sold. My main worry is that many people would associate it with the rather popular TV show, Shameless, which has both a US and a UK version, apparently. I’ve seen one episode of the show and that was enough for me to question how usable the name is. It wouldn’t bother me too much, because TV shows don’t last too long (and more importantly, my older family members won’t have seen it to be able to criticize the choice lol).

What do you guys think? Issue? [name_f]Non[/name_f]-issue? Keep looking?

I think it’s cute!

@mccharlie: Awe, I’m glad to hear that! I was honestly worried that it would get a slew of negative comments…it’s still early, lol, but I’m glad it has started out positive!

I’m thinking about asking my husband if he would consider us using it as a middle for his top contender, [name_m]Ivan[/name_m]. [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] sound pretty decent to me

[name_m]Ivan[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] sounds so lovely!
It has a happy vibe and a pleasant European feel

I’ve never seen Shameless so I wouldn’t get that association, however, I’d say maybe it’s too Oasis?! Especially as they’re still fighting and appearing in the news every once in a while.

I do think it works nicely as a middle name, though!

Having seen Shameless, it is definitely not something I would ever consider. As you mentioned, the show has a pretty large following in multiple countries and has been on the air for something like 7 years (in the US).

@emmievis: Thanks! It does sound pretty European…do you think it would be okay on an American boy?

@opheliaflora: Oasis was actually one of my lesser concerns, because I wasn’t sure that was as relevant in today’s world as Shameless. Duly noted, though! I’m sure plenty of others would draw the connection there, too! Thank you

@lonestar: Thank you! I appreciate the honesty! I think it might be best for us to only consider it as a middle, then. Middles aren’t generally common knowledge, so the potential future little mister wouldn’t really have to endure much flack that way.

I think [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] is a great name. I would put it in the middle spot if you decide to use it, because it screams “surname” to me. while the show might be big now, when he’s older I’m sure it won’t be a big deal anymore. I’ve never seen it so I never would have made a connection.

I don’t watch Shameless, but my mother and sister do. I polled both of them, and our answers were the same: [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] definitely isn’t associated primarily with the show for us.

@oneofthetrio: Thank you! It really does scream “surname” and might be a bit much as a first.

@lee_augusta: Ooh, awesome of you to poll them! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see that it isn’t a primary association for at least some people who watch the show!

I’m quite young (I’m a late 1990s baby), but I definitely think of Oasis and the warring [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] brothers before the TV show (which I’ve only vaguely heard of). I’d probably assume that [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] was a homage to the band.

I like it! Cute…go with it if you like it too!

I love it as a first name. [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] is so handsome! I’ve never seen Shameless so my opinion is based purely on the name.

Makes me think of the comedian that smashes watermelons

Sorry for the late response!
I think it would work on an American boy since it’s 2 names from completely different places in Europe

[name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] sounds cute, but a mouthful. I wonder what the nickname possibilities are?
I haven’t heard of the TV reference.
[name_m]Ivan[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] is a great name!

I think [name_u]Noel[/name_u] and [name_m]Liam[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m], the brothers from Oasis (but is that really a bad thing???) I love the sound of [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] and think it makes for a great name :slightly_smiling_face:

I have actually watched shameless on a few occasions. It’s… Idk. I must admit, I’m not quite sure why it’s so successful. It’s just so bleak.
Anyhow, I personally wouldn’t use [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] as a first name. The show is imo very memorable and I wouldn’t want to associate a baby with that…

But [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] is lovely!

A huge thank you to those who responded since the last time I looked at this thread, yesterday! I appreciate the array of responses and we are taking each piece of feedback seriously. DH’s responses are that he doesn’t really mind the Oasis and brother drama. He hasn’t seen the TV show, but I described it to him and he said it wouldn’t be an issue, since that isn’t something that reigns in our household. Lastly, he still really liked [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m], but now doesn’t like [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] because it is the name of “many killers”…so maybe we will consider [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m]- [name_m]Felix[/name_m] being our other top boy name- but will keep [name_m]Ivan[/name_m] [name_m]Gallagher[/name_m] as a forerunner, since he will likely change his mind about [name_m]Ivan[/name_m]…

Thanks so much, everyone!
