This baby will be here any second, I, can feel it! Thanks to some great feedback I’ve definitely narrowed down to our top two choices. But I am really struggling with which to use!!
Gemma Lucy
Lucy Gretchen
( Last name begins with a G, ends in …way, is 3 syllables).
THE DILEMMA:
I LOVE the name Gemma, and like the name Lucy. DH didn’t like Gemma all that much but I love it so much that I worry not using might give me name regret. But I don’t dislike Lucy so it’s not that I wouldn’t like that name, but just could be sad I didn’t take the opportunity to use the name I love. And, we’d still be using the agreed upon name in the middle name spot. So this all leads me towards Gemma Lucy.
BUT, I have 2 sisters. My first daughter already has one sister’s name as her middle name so it would be nice if second girl had the other sister’s name as her middle name, though I don’t think that sisters feelings would be hurt if it isn’t, her name is Gretchen. And Lucy is pretty much the only name DH truly agreed on but is slowly getting on board with Gemma, though I know would prefer Lucy. This all makes Lucy Gretchen the favored name.
So I feel have good reasoning for both names. And it feels like a 50/50 split practically.
***What would you do? What personalities/images do you get with each?
P.S. I also have two neighbors each with a dog named Lucy and I have a distant relative named Lucy that is kind of out there for me, but I’m trying to not let these things get in the way.
Also I feel Gemma is less common than Lucy which also makes me like it more. But these last reasons are all secondary.
I do like both options quite a bit - and about the same, actually!
My first reaction while reading your post was to advise going with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] - it’s a name that both you and your DH like, and that also honors someone important to you. Those are both good reasons to give a name to your child!
I guess it would depend on how much you feel you would regret not using [name_f]Gemma[/name_f]? Are you certain of that regret? I’ve known a few women who have deep regret on the name they gave their child - it’s not something so fun to live with!
These names give me very different images. [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] - I see a quiet, popular, beautiful girl. Smart, kind, gentle…a bit stand-offish. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], on the other hand, I see as a bit of a tomboy. Pretty, happy, very outgoing. Athletic and talkative. A little overwhelming! [name_m]Both[/name_m] great, but vastly different!
DH and I have decided to have three names that we love ready when we have our little girl - in case one doesn’t suit her once we meet her. Perhaps, once you’ve held her, she’ll just be a [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] or a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]!
Personally I prefer [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] - I love the juxtaposition of the somewhat dainty [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] with the strength of [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f], sand yet both names feel feminine and fit well together. Also I love that the middle name honours one of your sisters (I always have family names for middles).
Where I’m from ([name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand) [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] is a far more commonly used name than [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], so that makes me prefer [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a first, but if you truly, truly love it, maybe reminding hubby of the dogs and distant relative named [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] might get him more on board with [name_f]Gemma[/name_f]?
I can see how [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] wouldn’t work because of her initials being GGG, but perhaps [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] G…way?

It’s pronounced the same but gets away from the initials being same-same-same, and [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] is a Hebrew name which means dove so it’s still a nice meaning even though it’s no longer a precious gem-stone ([name_f]Gemma[/name_f]).
If your OH still wants [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] what about two middles? [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] G…way or [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] G…way works in my head (however two middles are far more common over here so those options might sound dreadful to you).
Best of luck finding the perfect name for your new bundle!
Since your last name starts with a G and ends in way, for me [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] G…way would feel choppy. Overall I think that [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] G…way would flow better.
