Which spelling do you prefer for a name that you want pronounced ‘[name_u]JEM[/name_u]-mah’.
Personally, I learn towards [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], as a gem or gemstone is spelled with a G. But, I fear she’ll get ‘gah-emma’ (like gamma but with an e) a lot. The [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] spelling would solve this, but I feel like it looks tacky and that I’m trying too hard. What do you guys think?
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]. I think (naively?) that the word ‘gem’ should be familiar enough to people that they won’t make the mistake you described too often.
Definitely [name_f]Gemma[/name_f]. I don’t think you need to worry about it being mispronounced. In the English language, G is a J sound when followed by an E.
Definitely [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], my in laws are not up to date on any uncommon names, meaning they would be the people you would fear pronunciation wise, and they knew [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] right away.
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f], definitely. I have never heard someone mispronounce it as GHEMM-ah. People say [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] right, so I’d assume they’d get [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] right, too. I just think [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] looks more aesthetically pleasing, and beautiful. Plus, I think [name_f]Gemmy[/name_f]'s adorable!
I don’t think anyone will have difficulty pronouncing [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] as “[name_f]Gem[/name_f]-ah”. I prefer [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] over [name_f]Jemma[/name_f].
I used to far prefer [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] when I was younger - I had a doll named [name_f]Jemma[/name_f]! But I now think I prefer [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], possibly because I have a good friend with that spelling. I think [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] is common enough that people aren’t likely to mispronounce it, I would say its a lot more common than [name_f]Jemma[/name_f].
