Geordie

I just ran across the nickname [name_m]Geordie[/name_m] (for [name_m]George[/name_m]). [name_m]How[/name_m] is it pronounced? Like [name_u]Jordan[/name_u] - [name_m]Jordy[/name_m]? Or some other way. Thanks for the help - as my husband is a [name_m]George[/name_m] IV and chose to not carry his family name on with his first son, I think I will throw this option into the hat. =)

I’m fairly certain it would be like [name_m]Jordy[/name_m].

It rhymes with [name_m]Jordy[/name_m]; however, I think it’s too nicknamey to use on its own.

It is pronounced like [name_m]Jordy[/name_m]. Although I’ve never come across [name_m]Jordy[/name_m] before - only [name_m]Geordie[/name_m]. I actually know quite a few [name_m]Georges[/name_m] who go by [name_m]Geordie[/name_m].

Thanks, everyone. I don’t know if we will use it or not. But good to know that I am pronouncing it correctly.

but have never known how to pronounce it. I didn’t realize it was a nickname for [name_m]George[/name_m], thought it was one for [name_m]Gordon[/name_m]/[name_m]Gordie[/name_m], so I’ve been thinking of it as gee-or-de.

In the UK, someone from the [name_u]North[/name_u]-[name_f]East[/name_f] of [name_f]England[/name_f] is known as a [name_m]Geordie[/name_m] (it is also a local dialect) and the first part (Geor) is pronounced just like it is in [name_m]George[/name_m]. It sounds weird as a name/nn to me but I suppose if you are in the US it doesn’t matter (though [name_m]Geordie[/name_m] Shore is a British version of the TV show [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Shore, I don’t know if [name_m]Geordie[/name_m] Shore is shown in the US?)

I agree with pp, it sounds strange as a name. When I think of [name_m]Geordie[/name_m], I think either:

A nickname for [name_u]Jordan[/name_u] when spelt [name_m]Jordy[/name_m]
Someone from Newcastle in [name_u]North[/name_u]-[name_f]East[/name_f] [name_f]England[/name_f]
[name_m]Geordie[/name_m] Shore (horrible imitation of the already awful [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] Shore!)

I prefer just [name_m]George[/name_m], a timeless classic with a royal connection
