Gertrude? Is it an ugly name?

I found a post where it said [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] is usually the example of an ugly name but I actually like it and the nn [name_u]Rue[/name_u] makes it even more appealing to me
What do you think of this name?? Which middles whoud you pair it with?
Could she be a sister to [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] ([name_f]Ada[/name_f]), [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] ([name_u]Noa[/name_u]) and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] ([name_f]Liv[/name_f]/ [name_u]Val[/name_u])?

Its sounds aren’t the most appealing to me to be honest. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] its not my name… lol
It doesn’t match with Valentina in my head anyway.

I think it’s generally considered an ugly name but I actually like it. I think it sounds elegant, like a refined Edwardian woman. [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is a cute nickname! I can definitely see her fitting with that sister set.

I don’t like to speak so negatively of names… but I struggle so hard with this one.

It’s the Ger part that I can’t get over. It’s such a harsh sound, I really can’t see the appeal of it. And while I think [name_f]Trude[/name_f]/Trudy are perfectly fine on their own, they don’t have the right sound to balance out Ger, they really just add to the heavy feeling.

I really like the [name_u]Rue[/name_u] nickname with your others though, so there’s that! On that vein, I wonder if [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] nn [name_f]Prue[/name_f] would work for you?

I adore the name [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]!! It is so strong and some how very feminine at the same time.
It also is the name of the amazing writer, traveller, administrator, and archaeologist, [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] [name_u]Bell[/name_u]!!
:))

Hi there.

I don’t know about this one. I almost feel like the more you say it, the sweeter it sounds. And the nn [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is fun; I never thought of that. [name_f]Trudy[/name_f] is kind of cute too, & maybe even [name_f]Gigi[/name_f]. But I personally am in love w/Gerty. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:  I’d use it as a nn for [name_f]Greta[/name_f] ([name_f]Margaret[/name_f] works too), but [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] nn [name_f]Gerty[/name_f] is actually pretty adorable if you think about it.

Hope this helps.

[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] is definitely ugly in my mind - it’s similar to [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_f]Helga[/name_f], in that sense.

I don’t think it fits [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f], and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]. Those names are very pretty and soft, compared to how ugly and harsh [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] is. If my sisters were named [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f], and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] but my name was [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], I’d wonder why I was so unlucky

It’s not an appealing sound imo. I also feel like, while some people here have claimed that the ā€œuglinessā€ of the name is why they like it, I wouldn’t want ā€œuglyā€ to be a popular attribute that people give to my name. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if that ugliness is appealing to some. It just feels like a backhanded compliment.

I don’t know. I wouldn’t want it to be my name. It feels like a difficult name to wear. I also agree with @venezio that if my name was [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] and my sisters were [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f], and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], I’d wonder why they were named like princesses and I was named like the witch.

Hmm, I like [name_f]Trudie[/name_f] and I’ve kind of been endeared to [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] but [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] doesn’t quite appeal to me. I don’t think it fits with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] as they feel so light and pretty whereas [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] is quite heavy

It’s one of those that I would say is an ā€˜acquired taste’ you either love it or hate it. But there’s not much neutrality on it

Very unfortunate sounding. I would not saddle a child with a name that so many people think is downright ugly.

I find it unappealing, but some people like clunky names and it is unabashedly vintage. Also, Rue is a good nickname.

I find it harsh-sounding and unflattering. I certainly wouldn’t want my name to be [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]. ā€œGertā€ just doesn’t sound pleasant to me. With sisters named [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], I think [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] would stick out in a bad way.

Gertrude definitely has an interesting and distinctive sound! It’s not a favorite of mine though. I much prefer just [name_f]Trudy[/name_f] (or [name_u]Rue[/name_u]!). That’s just my personal opinion, though; I’d be intrigued to meet a little [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]!

No name is ugly or beautiful in itself. It is subjective. I’d rather be named [name_f]Araminta[/name_f] than [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] but I’d rather be named [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] than [name_f]Jenna[/name_f]. [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is cute. I think [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] are great together!

I loveeee [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]! Nickname [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is cute! Never thought of it! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite nn is [name_f]Trudie[/name_f]. However, [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] sounds so old next to [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f], and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], sorry :slightly_frowning_face:
but [name_u]Rue[/name_u] kinda works with their nicknames!

To me it is a very ugly name. I would never use it. I cannot find anything likeable about it. Please don’t give to a daughter after the other three have such beautiful names.

So ugly.
/sorry

Also, ā€œrueā€ means regret/dread.
It’s a lot to saddle a kid with.
Maybe True as a NN instead of Rue?

The other names seem more positive in vibe, outlook, and sound.

Similar names that might be appealing:

  • Judith / Judy
  • Ruth (RBG!)
  • Trinity
  • Lucille
  • Prudence / Prue

Not for me. The ā€œrudeā€ part turns me off.
