I’m most grateful to everyone who has kindly contributed their feedback and advice on my recent posts
I really fell in love with the suggested combo; [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], but sadly and very frustratingly, my husband doesn’t want a bar of [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] (as much as I’ve tried to sell it to him!!!)
So, I’ve been trying to think of another equally charming, handsome and underused alternative for [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and was wondering what you all thought about [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]? I’ve read some old threads about this name and it seems to be the type of name that divides opinions quite markedly. Berries either love it or loathe it.
Please - I’m all for honesty - but I’d really appreciate that nothing too brutal is said. I seem to have become a little sensitive in my search for THE name. Lol
Thank you in advance! I can’t wait to hear back from you all
I honestly expected that there wouldn’t be a lot of love for this name, so I can’t say I’m surprised. A bit deflated, yes, but not surprised… [name_u]Griffin[/name_u] and [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] aren’t really my style but I do appreciate the suggestion, thank you
Big brother is [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and I just thought that [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] sounded like brothers??
SO relieved to hear that someone sees the charm in this old name. I’ve never quite understood why [name_m]Albert[/name_m] is so fashionable at the moment, yet [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] isn’t? What makes one ‘[name_u]Bert[/name_u]’ name more appealing than another?
Ah, @adelaide_pearl! I feel frustrated for you, I really hope you find The Name soon!
Gilbert is in theory in the same ball park as [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], but it’s just not as charming for me. I don’t mind it, but it’s just not got the warmth of [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] somehow. I really want to say that I love it, but I don’t, I’m sorry.
I know you’re probably sick of suggestions at this point but I’ll throw a couple your way anyway:
[name_m]Jeremy[/name_m]
[name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_m]Ralph[/name_m]
[name_m]Foster[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
Oh, and it goes without saying - if you love [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], feel free to ignore me!!
[name_u]George[/name_u] is gorgeous; a timeless classic. But for me, it’s just a bit too popular for my tastes. And I’m sorry, but I don’t really like the sounds in Gerris. It is an interesting one though. Admittedly, I’ve never actually heard of this one before. Kind of reminds me of [name_m]Ferris[/name_m]!
Thank you! I’ve only ever met one [name_u]Teagan[/name_u] and they were female. Now whenever I hear the name I just automatically associate it with being a girl’s name
I’m not a fan of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], sorry. In answer to your question about [name_m]Albert[/name_m] getting more love than [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], I think it’s the [name_m]Gil[/name_m]- part; I know I find it much less appealing than the [name_m]Al[/name_m]- syllable starting off [name_m]Albert[/name_m]. [name_m]Gil[/name_m] as a nickname as well, which I imagine [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] would get, makes me think of fish gills. Not a bad thing necessarily, but the sound just doesn’t appeal to me. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Rex[/name_u], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_u]Milo[/name_u], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Oskar[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_u]Claude[/name_u], [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m], [name_u]Asa[/name_u], [name_m]Monty[/name_m], [name_m]Amias[/name_m], [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Otto[/name_m] or [name_m]Winston[/name_m]?
I’ve really come to like [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] lately. I think it’s because I recently watched [name_u]Anne[/name_u] With an E on Netflix and I love the character [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f].
I love the nicknames [name_m]Gibb[/name_m], Gibbs, and [name_m]Gil[/name_m].
I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and grew up reading [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables so I LOVE [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
However of the --bert names, I actually think [name_m]Hubert[/name_m] is my favourite as I personally prefer the nickname Hu ([name_m]Hugh[/name_m]) over the nickname [name_m]Gil[/name_m]
What I do love about [name_m]Gil[/name_m] though is that it’s pronounced the way it’s spelled - unlike [name_u]Gill[/name_u] ([name_f]Gillian[/name_f]) which is a spelling that annoys me to no end lol
So true! I’m a bit hesitant to mention it to him just yet. I’ve got a feeling that it isn’t really his style and I don’t want it to be another name he shoots down … I really wanted to get some other opinions first to give me some confidence in suggesting it to him. But going by the responses so far I think my plan may have backfired
