I personally wouldnāt use the name [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], itās not quite my style. However I would love to meet a little [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]. The [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables association is precious! [name_m]Gil[/name_m] is a sweet nickname and so is [name_u]Bertie[/name_u].
I adore [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] soooo much. Itās so sweet and vintage but somehow substantial. I like [name_m]Gilby[/name_m] as a nickname, or just [name_m]Gil[/name_m], although [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] is adorable too.
Gilbert is a great name! Ppl have heard of it but u hardly ever meet one. [name_u]Love[/name_u] nickname [name_m]Gil[/name_m] and love the [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables association.
Iām not a huge fan of it. Probably because where I live thereās a town called [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], so it doesnāt sound like a baby name to me.
Thanks for this! I didnāt think of [name_m]Gilby[/name_m] as a nickname. So, so sweet!
So pleased you love its charm too!!
Hehe - this is completely understandable!
Thank you! Fingers crossed with this one
Thank you for your feedback
You mentioned something that Iāve got to admit Iām worried about - teasing potential. Could I ask you why you think this name might cause teasing/bullying? Is it the āGilā beginning sound or the ābertā ending? I wouldnāt be able to live with myself for choosing a name for our son that would put him at risk of harmful teasing/bullying
Thank you! I actually quite like [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] but my husband doesnāt [name_m]Gulliver[/name_m] I find to be quite interesting, rugged and outdoorsy all at once. It was on my long list of names to begin with but I ended up taking it off, but only because I thought that it may be confused with [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. I didnāt want our son having to say repeatedly, āNo, itās not [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. Itās GULLIVER!ā

LOL! Message received. I guess I did ask after all!!
Iām not a fan of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] at all itās just nerdy and reminds me of a boy with a runny nose who is just bullied the whole time. I know sounds proper harsh but for me this is a big fat no!
I like the suggestion of [name_u]Griffin[/name_u]!

Itās not either syllable particularly, just the overall kind of dusty, nerdy vibe. When I was in school, most kids didnāt get teased purely because of their name. A cool kid could maybe pull off [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]. But if you were a shy/nerdy/unusual kid, AND you had an odd name, it immediately became a target. We had a kid named [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] who was mercilessly mocked for his unusual name because he was an unusual kid. It just makes me a bit hesitant now to choose anything too āclunky.ā
Thank you for your suggestions. You are completely entitled to have your own opinion so donāt worry about being harsh! This is what these forums are all about - voicing our opinions about names.
I noticed you suggested [name_m]Albert[/name_m] ⦠again it baffles me as to why AlBERT is so popular but GilBERT isnāt I really love the nickname [name_m]Gil[/name_m]!!!
Ahhhh - I see what you mean! Yes, I do think it depends on the childās personality too. I wonder if poor, awkward [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] would have still been a target for bullying if he was named [name_u]James[/name_u]?
Iām not a fan of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]. To me it sounds old-fashioned, but not in the charming āvintageā sense. I donāt think itās a bad name, but it just doesnāt appeal to me personally.
Thank you so much for your positivity!
Thank you I wish I were as confident as you about using the name. Iām a little worried now about the teasing potential of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
My associations with [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] are [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] and [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] (composers) and [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] Grape, a movie starring [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m] DeCaprio. Itās not a bad name, but it doesnāt really carry a positive vibe for me. Itās certainly generated a lot of conversation, though! Did you like [name_u]Grady[/name_u] at all? Sorry, this thread is so long itās hard to find responses.
