[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
I think you all know how much I love the name [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] at this point.
For a while, I was more heavily considering the J spelling, but really, my heart belongs to the G spelling of [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]. I prefer how it looks, feels, and just the whole name in general and I’m not entirely sure why. It also has Celtic roots, which I really like.
Anyway, I love the nickname [name_f]Jill[/name_f]. [name_f]Jill[/name_f] is such a sweet, retro nickname and is a playful take on the formal but lovely [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]. The only issue is spelling.
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f] will obviously get the nickname spelled [name_f]Jill[/name_f], but I’m slightly worried about [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] getting “Gill”, rather than [name_f]Jill[/name_f].
I know that it’s perfectly plausible to have Catherine’s nickname spelt as [name_f]Kate[/name_f], so I think [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] “Jill” would be fine. After all, nicknames are mostly said rather than written in my experience.
But just in case, are there any ways you all would recommend for promoting the [name_f]Jill[/name_f] spelling and deterring the [name_u]Gill[/name_u] spelling?
Thank you.
I think it’s fine!
I think it’s perfectly fine. I like [name_f]Jill[/name_f] better than [name_u]Gill[/name_u], too. [name_f]Jill[/name_f] would definitely make a cute nn for [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]!
I think [name_f]Jill[/name_f] is perfectly fine for [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]. Like you mentioned, a lot of nicknames get spelled a bit different to the longer name, so I don’t think it’s be a problem.
I don’t think it’s an issue. Anyway, nicknames are most commonly used in everyday speech, and not spelt.
[name_f]Jill[/name_f] works for [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]. (There’s a book called [name_f]Jill[/name_f] and the main character’s fullname is [name_f]Gilbertina[/name_f] and it works )
I feel like if you were to introduce her as [name_f]Jill[/name_f], most people would guess the spelling [name_f]Jill[/name_f] as it’s more familiar. I guess the only way you can make sure she gets [name_f]Jill[/name_f] is to perhaps do an announcement: meet baby [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] ‘Jill’ so people know right away. When she goes to school, you could have [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] as her legal name and [name_f]Jill[/name_f] as her preferred name - teachers would read it first before meeting her
You know my thoughts on this already haha, but I think [name_f]Jill[/name_f] totally works!! I think that’s how most people would intuitively spell it anyways (even if they know her name is spelled with a G)
Such a lovely name
Wow - [name_f]Jill[/name_f] for [name_f]Gilbertina[/name_f]! I’ve never thought of that, but that’s really creative!
And that’s a good point about preferred names, and about the birth announcement. Thankyou!
Thank you so much! I feel the [name_f]Jill[/name_f] spelling is quite intuitive
I also agree that it works!
We have considered using [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] with the nickname [name_f]Jen[/name_f] or [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], and I think those work better than [name_f]Gen[/name_f] or [name_f]Genna[/name_f], at least to my eyes and pronunciation.
I also have an uncle [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] who always went by [name_u]Jerry[/name_u] which I don’t think was uncommon for men with that name!
It makes total sense to me! Fwiw I know two Gillians who go by [name_u]Gill[/name_u] pn ‘Jill’ so not everyone would automatically pronounce [name_u]Gill[/name_u] with a hard G, but I agree that [name_f]Jill[/name_f] is nicer! Is [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] an option?
It’s just not the same as [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]. [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] blends in too much with my other J names, but also I love the Celtic roots of [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]. I do love [name_f]Jillian[/name_f], but [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] is my favourite spelling, at least at the moment.
i like it! i prefer jill to gill anyways 🫶🏼
