I like the name [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f], but much prefer the more feminine [name_f]Giavanna[/name_f].
I think this would work for a non-Italian baby. I would definitely consider it and I’m not italian.
I like [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] a lot as well, but prefer [name_f]Giavanna[/name_f] and [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] is also much more popular than [name_f]Giavanna[/name_f].
I love all of them though. Good luck!
#1 What are your thoughts on [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]?
It has a very Italian feel to it due to the [name_m]Gio[/name_m]- beginning. I don’t love it but don’t hate it either.
#2 [name_m]Will[/name_m] this name work on a child of non-Italian heritage?
I thought about this a while ago actually. [name_m]How[/name_m] would I feel with a name that “screams” Italian/Irish/[name_f]Indian[/name_f]/etc. heritage, when I have no roots in this country. Honestly, I would feel a bit weird to be seen as someone with Italian roots by people, when I am in no way Italian (or Irish, Scottish, etc.). Especially if my siblings had names that wouldn’t indicate the same heritage.
#3 Also, what do you think of the diminutive [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]?
I definitely prefer this one, it seems more international, while still having the same origin.
#4 [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] or [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]?
Yes
What are your thoughts on [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]?
It’s a very classically Italian name, a little sharp, as it’s a direction feminization of a male name ([name_m]Giovanni[/name_m]). It’s not exceptionally modern, either; to my knowledge, it’s not a very popular name for Italians right now. I think of it as sort of the Italian version of something like [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f].
[name_m]Will[/name_m] this name work on a child of non-Italian heritage?
I suppose it could, though I might find it a bit odd, just because it’s so blatantly Italian, probably the most stereotypically Italian name.
Also, what do you think of the diminutive [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]?
It’s cute. Not really my style, but nice.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] or [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]?
Hmmm, it’s my inclination to say [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]. It’s spunkier, has more character and flows easier off of the tongue. But I can see [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] more easily used on a girl of non-Italian heritage, perhaps because I know a [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] of British heritage (not a drop of Italian blood). She went by the nickname [name_m]Gianni[/name_m] (sp.?), though I’ve seen [name_f]Gia[/name_f] suggested for both.
I love this name. If I were of Italian heritage or the baby’s daddy was it would be a top contender. However, I am not and to me this is a very classically Italian name. The only people I have met with this name are either Italian or have strong Italian heritage. I’ve heard a couple girls with this name also go by the nn [name_m]Gio[/name_m].
I think [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] is a little more workable for those of us who don’t have Italian roots, but I prefer [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f].
I really like the name [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]. It’s not my personal style but I think its a very nice nice. I know a little girl about 3 named [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f] and she is in no way of Italian heritage and it works beautifully, I wouldn’t give it a second thought. To be honest, in a place with such diverse heritage like the US, where so many of us have mixed ethnicities, I don’t see it being an issue.
@myla14 Thanks for the feedback Glad you think it can work for a non-italian baby.
@bibliophile I know a non Italian girl named Gianna as well, so I know it can work. However I just love Giovanna because as you said it is spunkier, though being a non-Italian I can see the name raising more than a few eyebrows. In the end, I always remind myself it is a much better name than Rocket Wild.
@opheliaflora Thank you I never thought about the mismatched sibset part. I mean I love the name but you are right in saying that having 1 kid with an Italian name and other kids without such loud names may seen weird. I know Gianna can work better, I just prefer Giovanna.
@aym You have a great taste in names, I love this name as well. I totally agree with you on Gianna working better on a child without Italian roots, but I really love Giovanna.
@katieree331 I’ve never met a non-Italian Giovanna but I know a guy of African descent named Giovanni and my friend just thought something was wrong with his parents for giving a non-Italian child such an Italian name. So though I love the name, I was wondering if it would be an issue but I am SO GLAD it works! Thanks for the feedback.
[RIGHT][/RIGHT]I love [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f] and prefer it to [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]. I think it works even if you’re not Italian, but if I met a [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f] I would assume they had some Italian connections, not necassarily heritage.
[name_f]My[/name_f] neighbor just had a baby girl & named her [name_f]Giavanna[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Her nn is [name_f]Gia[/name_f] . I also prefer this more feminine spelling.
I can provide a personal view for question 2. I have a blatantly Italian name ([name_f]Giulia[/name_f]) and have no Italian heritage (100% [name_m]German[/name_m].) I’ve never had an issue with it, and the only time people questioned my ethnicity was when I was visiting [name_f]Italy[/name_f]. They were completely surprised to see such a blond Italian ;). Honestly, I love my name and what ethnicity it is associated doesn’t bother me in the least.
I like [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Giavanna[/name_f]. It’s a great name. I prefer it over [name_f]Gianna[/name_f], because it has a few more nickname possibilities and also isn’t as popular.
@zillionzeldas I’m glad you think it works for a non-Italian Interesting thought with the connections vs heritage.
@ash1114 [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to hear you have a neighbor named [name_f]Giavanna[/name_f] and I appreciate the spelling feedback.
@gipro2003 I’m glad to hear that your Italian name worked for you as [name_m]German[/name_m]. I too prefer [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Giavanna[/name_f], I was just concerned about everyone assuming [name_f]Giavanna[/name_f] is an Italian by heritage.
@ilayali I’m glad you like the name I’m also happy to hear that so many people think ethnicity is not a big deal and [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f] can be used on a non-Italian.
