Girl name - Ava vs Sienna

Hi everyone,

we have one daughter called [name_f]Liv[/name_f] - we just loved the name for its cool, modern sound, its meaning (life) and we still love it.

Now we are expecting our 2nd daughter

Originally, I wanted another L-name, but haven’t found one that I like  If we happen to have a boy in the future, he will be called [name_m]Leon[/name_m], so anything [name_f]Lea[/name_f] / [name_f]Leandra[/name_f] / [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] / [name_f]Leona[/name_f] cannot really be used.

After lots of deliberation, we are between [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]. 2nd name will most probably be [name_f]Lou[/name_f], but this shouldn’t influence the 1st name decision as it’s only in the passport and isn’t really used in real life.

We live in a German-speaking country - I know [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is super popular in the US, but here it’s just on the rise - will probably be popular with babies born now and in the next 3-5 yrs. However, I am a bit worried it might be too popular and also then a bit too boring.

[name_f]Sienna[/name_f] - we like the sound of it, but I am a bit worried now after reading of associations with a car / laxative / cigarettes :stuck_out_tongue: and I find the meaning (“brown / reddish”) a bit uninspiring.

[name_m]Other[/name_m] names that were on the list but haven’t made it to top 2 were e.g. [name_f]Romy[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Antonia[/name_f].

Would love to hear your opinions (or other suggestions!).

Thank you & [name_f]Merci[/name_f]

As far as L names go, have you considered [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]? It’s lovely and underused!

A few others might be: [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], or [name_f]Lainey[/name_f] (although you might need to change [name_f]Lou[/name_f] for a few of them).

Between these two, I would probably go with [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. In the US, these sound a bit dated/early 2000s to me but I’m unsure about your country.

Hopefully this helps!

[name_m]Welcome[/name_m] and congratulations!

Between [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], I probably prefer [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] for you - it’s probably just me but I stumble ever so slightly over the double V sounds in [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] when said together, so for me [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] is a little more distinctive. I like its bright sound and warm imagery, the meaning isn’t the most inspiring one but you could always think of the beautiful city in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] as well! I wouldn’t worry about the associations with [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], it’s well used in the UK and I definitely think of the colour/city first.

[name_m]Other[/name_m] ideas:
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] / [name_f]Luana[/name_f] / [name_f]Luella[/name_f] (would rule out [name_f]Lou[/name_f] though)
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Malia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Mathilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Frida[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Juna[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Malou[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruby[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]

I love the name [name_f]Liv[/name_f]. Considered it for my oldest daughter, but it just didn’t make the cut.

I also love [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] as sister names, but [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] wins it for me. I know too many Ava’s, many of whom I have not been too fond of, sorry.

I also really like [name_f]Romy[/name_f] & [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] from your list. Some potential other suggestions are [name_f]Nova[/name_f], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_m]Tate[/name_m], [name_f]Reese[/name_f], [name_f]Skye[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f].

[name_f]Liv[/name_f] is beautiful! I definitely like [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] better with it. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Ava[/name_f] in general, and I think the double V sounds of [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Ava[/name_f] are a bit too same-y. And like others have said, [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] immediately makes me think of [name_f]Siena[/name_f], [name_f]Italy[/name_f], which makes up for the more average meaning of the name! I don’t have any other associations with it.

Ideas: [name_f]Mira[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Elisa[/name_f], [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Runa[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Fia[/name_f], [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Mina[/name_f], [name_f]Alma[/name_f]

[name_f]Liv[/name_f] is such a pretty name, and congratulations on the upcoming daughter!

I’m also advocating for [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]. It’s somewhat similar to [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] (double n, same vowels) but with an L so your girls can match!

Out of the two you listed, I prefer [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], as the double v’s in [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] also trip me up a little bit.

Congratulations!

So from your top 2 names my favourite is [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is elegant, has this old school Hollywood glamour vibe, is a timeless choice and I like how sleek L1v + [name_f]Ava[/name_f] look together.

Please count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries

[name_f]Marnie[/name_f], [name_f]Anaya[/name_f], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f] + [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

From your top two, I do prefer [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with [name_f]Liv[/name_f], and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] would be so cute! [name_m]The[/name_m] repeating “V” sound does trip me up a bit when saying them together, but that isn’t a huge deal.

A few other suggestions you might like (with positive meanings!):
[name_f]Aria[/name_f]
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f]
[name_f]Eden[/name_f]
[name_f]Lara[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with [name_f]Liv[/name_f]

I prefer [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] with [name_f]Liv[/name_f] - they both feel warm and vibrant, and I like that they complement but don’t overlap slightly as with [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. [name_f]Liv[/name_f] overshadows [name_f]Ava[/name_f] imo.

I also personally like when siblings have their own starting letter and esp if [name_f]Lou[/name_f] is the middle, I’d go for a non-L name. But [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] could be a good L name.

Some ideas:

[name_f]Zoe[/name_f] (also means life!)
[name_f]Sia[/name_f] - a mix of [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Alva[/name_f] - cooler [name_f]Ava[/name_f]?
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]
[name_f]Oona[/name_f] /Una
[name_f]Uma[/name_f]
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f]
[name_f]Juna[/name_f]
[name_f]Niva[/name_f]
[name_f]Tove[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_f]Zélie[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphi[/name_f]
[name_f]Saskia[/name_f]
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f]

Also hoping Romy/Romee can get another look at, it would go perfectly imo.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

[name_m]Welcome[/name_m] to Nameberry! Your daughter’s name is beautiful, and you have some lovely options for baby girl number 2!

I love [name_f]Ava[/name_f], and [name_f]Liv[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] are very sweet and minimalist together! It’s a beautiful name. I’m more inclined toward [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] though, personally - although I prefer the [name_f]Siena[/name_f] spelling. [name_f]Siena[/name_f] brings to mind [name_f]Italy[/name_f] rather than the car and the color, and [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Siena[/name_f] feel perfect together for me! I love [name_f]Siena[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f].

I adore [name_f]Romy[/name_f] & [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] - and I think they would have been gorgeous with [name_f]Liv[/name_f]! But if they didn’t feel just right, here’s a few other ideas:

  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Camila[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Pia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Fenna[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Zora[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Anja[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Tess[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Lula[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Esme[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Zelie[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Mira[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Liv[/name_f] & [name_f]Petra[/name_f]

Good luck!

I love [name_f]Ava[/name_f], and especially like it as a sister to [name_f]Liv[/name_f].

[name_m]Other[/name_m] suggestions, just because it’s fun and not because you need them:

[name_f]Bernice[/name_f]
Carey/Carrie
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_m]Dessie[/name_m]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Frankie[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Lizzie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Maude[/name_f]
[name_f]Melinda[/name_f]

I prefer [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] personally – warm, sunny and stylish. However, it seems you have more disadvantages to the name than with [name_f]Ava[/name_f]? So I might lean towards that instead.

[name_f]Anya[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Zara[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], and [name_f]Alba[/name_f] came to mind too

Thank you so much for all the kind opinions and suggestions! I love the input from everyone. Very helpful!! Thanks a lot

Also thanks for “Linnea”, I’ll definitely give it a thought and I love that this was suggested in an English-speaking forum as we are looking for a name that goes well internationally, not just in German-speaking environments.

This was by the way also one of my worries about Antonia - that it might not work as well in English-speaking countries.

I love that [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Liv[/name_f] would both be 3 letters !

I love [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]!

I love the meaning of Sienna. I met the most lovely little girl who wore it like a charm and made me realise how precious she is a name! I found the name annoying and nothing-y before.

This little girl had wonderfully brown skin, dark chocolatey eyes and hair, and her hair had a tint of red-orange that was often very visible against her skin tone. She was incredibly sweet and smart. The perfect Sienna.

I feel like if you have dark features in your genetics it might really suit your child, but if you’re on the lighter side, Ava might be a better fit. I don’t think Sienna Miller wears it well for example, no offence. Bit of a hot take sorry :face_with_peeking_eye:

I actually love [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with [name_f]Liv[/name_f]. They are just different enough that you don’t mix them up but they are also so cohesive with that short v sound.

My hang up with [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] is that I often hear people pronounce the name see-anna rather than see-enna, not sure if that would be an issue for you or not.

I think the other names on your list are lovely choices too, but between your top 2 I definitely vote for [name_f]Ava[/name_f].
