Girl name from mid-1800s England?

Main character: 12 or 13 years old girl, originally from [name]England[/name]. Abused by mom, ignored by dad. Shy, timid, intelligent. Pale skin, brown hair, blue eyes. [name]Story[/name] set in 1872 [name]Scotland[/name].

Name this character!

Ideas:

[name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Maud[/name]

I’m boring, but [name]Elizabeth[/name]. NN [name]Beth[/name].

Hmmm… how about?

[name]Eloise[/name]

[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Nan[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name]

These all bring to mind shy girls. I especially like [name]Nan[/name]

@merrybells—[name]Elizabeth[/name] was the first name that popped to mind, too!

My first thought was [name]Margaret[/name]…

Also:
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]

Good [name]Luck[/name]

[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Evie[/name]
[name]Gracie[/name]
[name]Annabel[/name]

[name]Lavinia[/name] nn [name]Vinnie[/name]

[name]Vinnie[/name] is a very british name
[name]Matilda[/name] is another one. There’s a nameberry list for british girl names-here’s the link:

Is it? O_o

I think of it as a British name, maybe that’s stereotypical! Sorry if it is (I see that you’re from [name]England[/name], so you’d know better than I would)

Thank you, everyone! After much deliberation, I realized that my character’s father was so disgusted by the idea of having a girl (her twin brother was born dead) that he refused to give her a name at all and she was just called ‘Girl’.

You all had some really great suggestions, though! Some secondary characters may end up using those names!

‘Girl’…I like that. Why didn’t I think of that??? But seriously, I think that method of naming works very well for your character’s situation.
