Girl name, have to start with "L"?

So I have a bit of a conundrum. My husband and I are due with our first in [name_f]July[/name_f]! If its a Boy, the name will be [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], both honor names. The girl name we are a little stuck on. My husband name starts with “J” and I wonder that since we are also going with a “J” name for a boy, if we should go with an “L” name for a girl, as my name starts with an “L”? Would it not really matter? I can’t decide!

If we go with “L” names I like:

[name_f]Layla[/name_f] (too popular though)
[name_f]Lilah[/name_f] (not as popular…)
[name_f]Leah[/name_f] (I get stuck on the meaning though)
Any other ideas??

If I can decide its “ok” to not stick with “L” names we have a few we like, but nothing we love:
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_u]Allison[/name_u] (is this name dated at all?)

I have a couple names I like but husband does not:
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_u]Everly[/name_u]
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] (I know it doesn’t go with the others at all!)

Any thoughts on this are appreciated! I just can’t seem to make any progress with a girl name because I am hung up on the “L” idea. Thanks!

You absolutely don’t have to use an L name. I am a C and my husband is a C so we wanted anything that wasn’t a C (or K).

[name_u]Allison[/name_u] is kind of dated but I still like it. Other options:

[name_f]Lola[/name_f] - like the other names you like but not as popular
[name_u]Laney[/name_u] - [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], [name_u]Lane[/name_u], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Laci[/name_f]
[name_f]Lanae[/name_f] (good middle)
[name_f]Liberty[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_f]Trudy[/name_f]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]

[name_f]Lilah[/name_f] is my favorite from your names.

Some other L-ideas:

[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Livia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]

You can do whatever you want, but it’s true that there are lots of pretty L names.

[name_f]Livia[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Liana[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]

You can do whatever you want, but it’s true that there are lots of pretty L names.

[name_f]Livia[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Liana[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]

My son and my husband are both K’s and I had considered going with an A name like mine for a future #2, so I understand your thought process. I definitely don’t think it’s necessary, especially if there isn’t an L name you love. Here are some suggestions
[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Lenora[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]/[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Liora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Lexy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
Lynley
[name_f]Libby[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
I also like the suggestions of [name_u]Laney[/name_u], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
Of your non-L names, I like [name_f]Elise[/name_f] best. [name_u]Allison[/name_u] seems a bit dated to me but a friend of mine actually has a 6 month old [name_u]Allison[/name_u] who is a doll! [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_u]Henley[/name_u], [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]?

I appreciate that you understand the thought process! People (close) look at me funny, but if we have a boy first, I feel like that would lock us into an “L” girl name. Since our boy name is an honor name though I could see where it might not be as big of a deal.

[name_f]Lexy[/name_f] is out as that is our dog’s name lol
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] is my middle name, and Im not a fan. If I did use it, I would pass it on as a middle name per family tradition.
I do kind of like Lynley
Is [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] “out-dated” too?
My problem with some of them is that they already seem to be nicknames for longer names. [name_f]Livia[/name_f] short for [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] for example.
Also, I wonder how some of the names will age? [name_f]Lola[/name_f] and [name_f]Libby[/name_f] are cute…but I have a hard time imagining them on a 30 year old mom, or lawyer etc.
I do like your suggestions of [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (although my husband will say that is dated) and [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] too! Thanks!

I definitely don’t think you should limit yourself to an L name whether or not you have a J son first. What if you have a girl first and want to go with L, and then end up with more girls and never use the J boy name? Would they all have to be Ls? I just think you’re limiting yourself too much by restricting to one letter. Find a name you and your husband love no matter what letter it starts with.

I think one issue is that “L” names can sometimes be more frilly and your style seems to be very contemporary. I did some thinking and came up with some “L” names that may be similar to [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] or [name_f]Elise[/name_f].

[name_u]Linden[/name_u]
[name_u]London[/name_u]
[name_u]Lennox[/name_u]
[name_f]Lindy[/name_f]

I also notice that you like names that begin with [name_f]El[/name_f]-. You could name her [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] (for example) and nn her [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. ??

Good luck!

My favorite L names:

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]

I definitely don’t think you have to go with an L name - honestly I doubt that anyone would make the connection unless your name sounded a lot like hers, especially since [name_m]Joel[/name_m] is an honour name. It might be a nice, subtle connection to make if there’s an L name you love, but if there isn’t, don’t worry about it.

I love [name_f]Lila[/name_f] (this spelling - I just find it a little less frilly) but if you’re concerned about popularity, [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] may not be ideal for you - when you add up all of the spellings people use for it, it’s much higher in popularity, plus it’s similar to a lot of names that are quite popular now ([name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f] as you mentioned, etc). [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is gorgeous and if you love it I’d vote that you use it anyway - just wanted to point that out in case it makes your choice easier.

I do think [name_u]Allison[/name_u] is dated - [name_f]Elise[/name_f] is lovely, though! A sleek, underused classic, and it would sound great with a possible future brother named [name_m]Joel[/name_m].

[name_m]Just[/name_m] saw your more recent post - I think [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] has been overused, although [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] is lovely and much fresher.

If you like [name_f]Libby[/name_f] but can’t see it on a professional adult, you could always use [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a full name with [name_f]Libby[/name_f] as the nickname. ([name_f]Libby[/name_f] is my favourite nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and I never see/hear it in real life! I think it’s awesome and spunky.)

You might happen to like:

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Norah[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] (on its own or as a nickname for [name_f]Teresa[/name_f])
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Serena[/name_f]

My favorite L name is [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]. Gorgeous!

From your list I like [name_f]Lilah[/name_f].

[name_u]Allison[/name_u] is also a great name. I think it is still modern in feel that it could work in 2015.

I don’t think you should limit yourselves to an L name but rather, choose a name that you truly love regardless of the initial. I may even suggest focusing on the rest of the alphabet because you would really feel “cornered” with the L initial for future daughters. There are so many beautiful names out there.

It is a nice gesture to go with an L for a girl since you will be using a J for a boy. It’s not necessary though…no one will notice (except maybe a Nameberry)

My favorite from your list is [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. Some other L girl’s names that are nice

[name_f]Lacey[/name_f]
[name_u]Larkin[/name_u]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Lux[/name_f]
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f]
[name_f]Lainey[/name_f] (I love this one)
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Lys[/name_f]
[name_f]Libby[/name_f]
[name_f]Liza[/name_f]

I think It would be nice to use L names, and that seems to be what you have your heart set on, so here are some more L names!
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Liza[/name_f]
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]
[name_f]Lacey[/name_f]
[name_u]Leighton[/name_u]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Lux[/name_f]
[name_u]Laken[/name_u]
[name_f]Lainie[/name_f]
[name_u]Lex[/name_u]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]

You definitely don’t have to stick with an L name, though it might be a cute idea.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about…

[name_f]Liora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]/[name_f]Lina[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Livia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lenora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]

My favorites from your list are [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] and [name_f]Leah[/name_f].

That’s cute!
Some names that start with L:
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]
[name_f]Lara[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]
[name_u]Lexi[/name_u]/[name_u]Lexie[/name_u] (you can also use [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] and [name_u]Lexie[/name_u] as nickname)
[name_f]Lia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilly[/name_f]/[name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelai[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Luz[/name_f]

Only go with an L name if you want to:)

My favourite L names:
[name_f]Lovisa[/name_f] & [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]

Other great L-names:
[name_f]Leocadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Lux[/name_f]
[name_f]Lisabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
Liselle
Leontina
[name_f]Liselotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Lisbet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lova[/name_f]
[name_u]Lisa[/name_u]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lisette[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]

Sorry for the repeats, and good luck!

I don’t think there’s any reason to stick with an L name. If you love an L name than great, but don’t use an L name just because. [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] is very beautiful though. I also love [name_f]Elise[/name_f]. I am not a fan of the names that your husband also doesn’t like - I find them sort of fad names.

If you really want an L name, some options are:

[name_f]Lise[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f]
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f]
[name_f]Leanna[/name_f]
[name_u]Leigh[/name_u]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]

My brother’s name starts w/an E & my [name_m]SIL[/name_m]‘s w/an L, & their first two kids ended up w/E & L names, but completely unrelated to their parents’ initials…it just worked out that way.

If you want to use an L name I say go for it; if you’re feeling confined by it, use something else.

Some L names & thoughts:

[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] was used a lot during the '80s & '90s, so I would say that [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] would seem newer & fresher.
[name_f]Livia[/name_f], while used as a nn for [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], is an independent name from [name_m]Roman[/name_m] times.
[name_f]Luisa[/name_f] is a pretty alternative to [name_f]Louise[/name_f] ([name_f]IMO[/name_f]).

My favorite L name is [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], which my ex nixed for our daughter because he has a niece [name_f]Marissa[/name_f]. I love the sound, look, & meaning, & would have used [name_f]Lissa[/name_f] as a nn.

Good luck, whatever you choose!
