Girl named Levi

Looking for a very girlie middle name to go with boyish [name]Levi[/name] for daughter coming in just 3 weeks!

[name]May[/name] I ask why you are naming your daughter [name]Levi[/name]?

I realize you are not asking for an opinion on the name [name]Levi[/name], but I just have to say that I think you will be setting your daughter up for future headaches and gender confusion…[name]Levi[/name] is a pretty unambiguously male name, a biblical one at that.

[name]How[/name] about…

[name]Levi[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Victoria[/name] (too much V?)
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Faith[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Gabrielle[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Isabelle[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Madison[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Aurelia[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Claire[/name]

Any of these strike your fancy?

I don’t want to offend you and as another poster said we know you’re not asking our opinion on [name]Levi[/name] for a girl, but I really would use caution here. [name]Levi[/name] is very traditionally male as well as a biblical name, and I think this would seriously hinder a little girl. It’s a heavy weight to carry and if my name were [name]Levi[/name] I would have some self esteem issues with trying to carry this very masculine name.

Roxby27,
Congratulations on the impending birth of your daughter!!

Off the top of my head, what do you think of:

[name]Levi[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Seraphina[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Catherine[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Gwendolyn[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Annabelle[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Serena[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Rose[/name]

On another note, I just wanted to let you know that I think [name]Levi[/name] is a pretty name for a girl. Many (if not most) names have belonged to either gender at some point or another. I think the change is one of the exciting parts of the evolution of naming. Some people have very strong feelings though that some names are girl only or boy only (more of the latter it seems, as there seems to be fear that once a girl has a name it is no longer boy -worthy, which is silly IMHO). With a choice like [name]Levi[/name] I am sure you are prepared for some backlash, but speaking from experience I think it is unwarranted. My name is [name]Jordan[/name] and when I was born in the 70s it was not an accepted name for girls. My grandparents apparently acted as if my parents had literally tied an albatross around my neck, and there were worries about my self esteem and femininity. All of the fuss was unfounded. I have always LOVED my name (especially when it was super rare for girls), and felt it supported my identity as a strong woman. The fact that most people think I am a man has gotten me in a lot of doors, and in the business world of email communication I am taken seriously and rarely brushed off the way some of my female colleagues are. At any rate, good for you for making an unusual choice. [name]Levi[/name] is a lucky girl, now what will her middle name be???

I love the name. It really feels Western/American/Colonial to me. I would go with something to evoke that image:

[name]Levi[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Louise[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Adeline[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Tallulah[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Katherine[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Mirabelle[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Roxy[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Madeline[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Rebecca[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Molly[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Cora[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Nellie[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Norah[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Moriah[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Ella[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Emma[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Margot[/name]
[name]Levi[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]

I agree. As someone on the outside, when I think [name]Levi[/name], I think of a large burly man with muscles and a mustache. Most people think of it as a very masculine name. Is that something you really want to bestow upon your daughter? People would always think that she were a boy, and she would have to constantly correct people for the rest of her life. Personally, I would go with a more mainstreamed unisex name if you really want a boyish name for a girl. [name]Levi[/name] is too traditional and religious to cross genders, in my opinion. It might offend some people.

Why not [name]Noa[/name]? It’s Biblical and commonly used for girls (spelled that way) in Hispanic culture. I know a few girls with this name and I’ve found it lovely for both genders.

[name]Levi[/name] [name]Isadora[/name] [name]LOVE[/name]!

[name]Jordan[/name] I love that you love your name. I understand that stay at home or women not in professional positions may think this is a hindering name, but having a caterer with the nations largest insurance company I also know that this name will help her through life as you stated in the world of email and resumes, it’s becoming ever more important that gender is unknown. My name is crystal and I only ever used my first initial on a resume.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Still undecided. I am 36 wks 3 days and have just now chosen the first name so it may take me a while. And let me tell you, being that I have just chosen my name, it was not chosen hastily!

I completely disagree with your statement about the increased importance of a female’s gender being unknown, and find it absurd and sexist.”I was accepted into a top college and law school, and am now practicing law at one of the best law firms in my city. I have never once been held back by my gender, nor have any of my female colleagues. My name is [name]Sarah[/name], and theirs are [name]Julia[/name], [name]Anna[/name], [name]Karen[/name], [name]Diane[/name], and [name]Mae[/name].”My point is that, in the 21st century, we should be teaching our children that they can achieve anything they dream, regardless of their gender. I think that choosing a boy’s name for your daughter just so her gender will be unknown will send the wrong message to her.

I agree with previous posters that [name]Levi[/name] is a very masculine name. I would not expect for a [name]Levi[/name] to be a girl. I think that it would annoy a little girl to be constantly confused for a boy, and potentialy cause her self esteem issues. I would advise you to choose a more accepted unisex name, as previous posters have suggested.”
Now, it is your child, and I fully respect your right to name her anything you want. ”If you want to name her [name]Levi[/name], by all means, name her [name]Levi[/name]. But please name her [name]Levi[/name] because you love the name, not because you think she will be hindered by her gender being known.

If you do go with [name]Levi[/name], I think something classic and feminine would be best in the middle. I vote for [name]Levi[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name].”
Best wishes,
[name]Sarah[/name] ” ”

What if your daughter is girly and hates having such a masculine name? I mean, I could understand it better if you were using a softer male name. But [name]Levi[/name] sounds like something a rugged cowboy would have. I picture a strong burly man when I think of [name]Levi[/name]. I would say this name is just as manly as [name]William[/name], [name]Thomas[/name] and etc. All of which seem too manly for a girl imo. I can’t picture a cheerleader, ballerina or otherwise “girly” girl being called [name]Levi[/name]. And if she does turn out to be a bit “manly” people will probably tease her even more! As someone who is girly, I would be very unhappy with the name [name]Levi[/name]. I mean, I wouldn’t want a boring “plane [name]Jane[/name]” name either, but I would want something wayyyy more feminine than [name]Levi[/name]. I would probably be ashamed of that name and go by my middle name instead in order to feel more feminine. Maybe you should pick something a little more gender neutral so your daughter can go either way.

I like these alternatives that have a sound similar to [name]Levi[/name]…

[name]Liv[/name]
[name]Livia[/name]
Liviana
Livian
[name]Livvy[/name]
[name]Levy[/name](the meaning isn’t great though)
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Olive[/name]
[name]Neve[/name]
Neveen
[name]Nevin[/name]

However, if you are dead set on [name]Levi[/name], I say pair it with the most feminine middle name you can find. Bring on the frills!!!

When I think of [name]Levi[/name] i think of someone who comes from a strong Jewish family and I would be flabbergasted if a Jewish family named their daughter [name]Levi[/name].

I have wondered why people give their girls boy’s names and a pp shed some light on that by saying her name opened doors to the business world.

I think [name]Levi[/name] is a great name for a girl personally. I don’t think of it as a masculine name at all. Actually when I hear the name [name]Levi[/name] I think of it quit girly. My friends cousin’s name is [name]Levi[/name] and when he came to visit my friend for the summer I thought he was going to be girly.
I don’t think it’s the name that makes people think you are a boy or a girl, it’s your appearance. My name is [name]Julia[/name] but I liked to wear boys clothes when I was little. I was often confused to be a boy because of that. It never really bothered me.

I don’t think the name is the reason for the gender confusion, it’s the child’s appearance. My name is [name]Julia[/name] but I liked to wear boys clothes when I was little. I was often confused to be a boy because of that. It never really bothered me.

I’m not weighing in on the name [name]Levi[/name] because the OP didnt ask for opinions and frankly, I dont have an issue with it but I think this is insulting to stay at home mothers or women who dont work (of which I am neither) and is in no way helpful to the topic. I dont have a problem with dissenting opinions but this is downright rude and discriminating, you couldve stated this more politely.

Edited to say Im not trying to start problems

DH and I once considered [name]Levi[/name] for a girl. Nice choice. I love nameberry and the advice that is typically given here, but just know that its not the friendliest place for gender-crossing baby namers. In other words, don’t take it personally, lots of berries like their girls names to be girls names and their boys names to be boys names.

That being said, I really liked [name]Levi[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] when we were considering the name. Another one I like is [name]Levi[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name].

This just struck me as funny I hope that you have the same sense of humour as I do, but what do you think of [name]Levi[/name] [name]Jean[/name]?

I know of a baby girl named [name]Levi[/name] [name]Savannah[/name]. I was surprised to hear [name]Levi[/name] on a girl, but I have to admit, I think [name]Levi[/name] [name]Savannah[/name] is adorable! I like [name]Levi[/name] [name]Susannah[/name] even better!

Good luck making your decision :o)
