We know giving girls masculine names is getting more and more common, but what about the opposite? What are some traditionally “girl” names (not gender neutral names) that could work for a boy?
I personally think names like [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would look very cute on a boy.
Recently, I’ve been really into traditionally female-given honor names for boys, like [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Hope[/name_f], and [name_f]Grace[/name_f].
Names like [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] were being used on boys in the early 1900s - I just found that interesting!!
I like the idea of [name_f]Lois[/name_f], [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_u]Hazel[/name_u], [name_u]Willow[/name_u], [name_f]Delta[/name_f], [name_u]Florence[/name_u], [name_f]Amity[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_u]Romy[/name_u] on a boy!
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] on a boy is so nice
I like [name_u]Willow[/name_u] or Willows on a boy…more than on a girl, I think. Same with a lot of nature names.
[name_f]Emerald[/name_f] is still more a guilty pleasure. The sound of it seems more masculine to me. Like, the beginning reminds me [name_u]Emmet[/name_u] or [name_u]Emmerson[/name_u], and the ending is like all the -rald -nald -bald boy names out there. But the jewel and the history as a girl names make it really difficult to reconcile.
I’m very hypocritical, I don’t like boy names on girls, but I like girl names on boys
[name_f]Emerald[/name_f] would make such an awesome name for a guy. When I hear a guy named [name_f]Emerald[/name_f], I think of either a well-respected professor or a badass biker. It’s such a cool name.
I’m not too keen on the idea of giving boys traditionally feminine names, but I do like the idea of boys reclaiming names that were originally masculine but have been considered feminine for awhile. It would be nice to see names like [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], [name_f]Shirley[/name_f], [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], and [name_u]Blair[/name_u] on little boys again.
[name_f]Inez[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Lana[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] would actually sound awesome on a boy.
I love a lot of nature names for boys so Hazel, Juniper (I actually used to know an elderly man named Juniper!) Rose, Clover, Lark, Ruby, etc.
I also love boys names that have history of masculine use but are seen as feminine coded now, like Whitney, Vivian, and Marion.
I’ll have to give more thought to traditionally feminine names that I think cross the aisle well, but one I can think of that I totally adore is Endellion!
The doll line [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f] High has a little web series and the quarterback of the football team in it is a boy named [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]!
