Giselle is the name controversial?

I think it’s from living in [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]England[/name_u], but the reactions to [name_f]Giselle[/name_f] seem really negative which is a bummer because I really like the name. Especially with the nicknames [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].

What are your thoughts? Is it negative?

I never had percieved it negatively. It comes with a whole host of cute nicknames as well even though the name is already elegant enough. You’ve got the possibility of (Elle, [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], Elsie) I know you mention [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] as another and that is the only thing I can think of as disagreeable, [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] is so clunky and just not pretty sounding. Plus, a grown woman called [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] just doesnt seem to fit

I lived pretty close to [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]England[/name_u] for a couple years, and I’m still not aware of any negative association there? I think you’re fine.

I love [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], I think [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] would be more just home use. I call my kids lots of names.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] currently getting a lot of pushback because of football? I’m not a football person at all. I honestly think of Enchanted first but I’m worried it could be perceived badly living here

I think it’s the divorce with [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_u]Brady[/name_u] of which I know very little. But I got negative reactions from some family and my husband seems to only see it as “Tom Brady’s wife”

[name_f]My[/name_f] only association is the ballet (which is a tragedy btw), but that has never made me love the name any less! I actually like it more because of the ballet, because it always sounds so graceful.

Yes definitely aware of the ballet too!

I’m getting tired of hearing “that’s [name_m]Tom[/name_m] Brady’s wife”

I’m really loving the name especially with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]

Controversial? No, I don’t think so at all. I’ve known several girls called [name_f]Giselle[/name_f]. It’s a beautiful name! Feels ethereal, royal, and light. The meaning “pledge” only adds to that- so pretty. [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is an inspired nickname  I love that x

[name_m]Can[/name_m] somebody elaborate??? Why is the name seen as controversial? [name_f]My[/name_f] mom is named [name_f]Giselle[/name_f]! : (

I know nothing about American football, and therefore know nothing about Tom Brady & his (ex?) wife, but whatever controversy exists with them will fade! Celebrity gossip becomes irrelevant very quickly, I wouldn’t worry too much. Giselle is a lovely, very elegant classic.

[name_f]Giselle[/name_f] was #361 for baby girls in the US last year. It’s hardly unheard of.

I do know of [name_f]Gisele[/name_f] Bündchen (Tom’s wife) and I do think the association will fade. Besides, the form you like is spelled differently!! I think it’s a beautiful name and there should be no reason why you shouldn’t use it!! :two_hearts:

Funny, in my circle [name_f]Gisele[/name_f] Bündchen (the model) is probably more famous than [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_u]Brady[/name_u]. I actually only know about [name_m]Tom[/name_m] because of [name_f]Gisele[/name_f]. I don’t understand why she would be a negative association? She’s one of the most successful fashion models and she supports a lot of charitable causes.

I agree with @choupette, I am aware of the [name_f]Gisele[/name_f] Buendchen association (she is more famous in my world than [name_m]Tom[/name_m] Brady) and that makes me love the name even more. The only drawback I can see to this name is the first syllable sounds like an unfortunate slang term. Still, I’ve known a few Giselles and although I’m sure they’ve been teased here and there about it, it doesn’t affect my view of the name.

This is my hold up with Giselle, not her just Tom Brady :joy:

Also it really sounds like gazelle to me but Im a weirdo.

This is the only negative Ive encountered, and it bothers some more than others.

As for Giselle Bundchen and the ballet they are associations but I dont really see them as negative associations.

I LOVE [name_f]Giselle[/name_f]. I don’t understand how there could be any negative reactions. And I’m stumped about the first few letters being a slang term. I’m going to have to look that up. I’ll probably wish I hadn’t once I’ve looked it up.:face_with_peeking_eye:

I wouldn’t worry about that kind of controversy because it’s soooo temporary and fleeting.

Who knows, within the next year he could get married again, divorce again, then that woman’s name will be “controversial” They’ll forget all about [name_f]Giselle[/name_f] and their only association will be your beautiful child

Its a term I had never heard until someone explained it to me on another forum. So I dont know how popular/common the term is, or whether its still relevant today. It’s also spelled with a ‘j’ rather than a ‘g’ so that separates it from the name a little more.
