I really like it, but I really adore those old names like that. I don’t think you’ll have trouble with people not spelling or pronouncing it correctly, it’s uncommon but not an unheard of name.

I don’t think it’s a timeless classic exactly, but it’s an amazing name. I like it very much.

I think it’s beautiful with a wonderful meaning and great personal resonance for you, but you need to go into it eyes open that the first syllable ‘God’ [name]WILL[/name] cause some social problems for your son in adolescence.

Would you be interested in a variant that doesn’t contain the English word ‘god?’

[name]Geoffrey[/name]
[name]Gottfried[/name]
Siothrun / Seathra ([name]SHAY[/name]-tra)
[name]Goffredo[/name] / [name]Fredo[/name]

I think [name]Geoffrey[/name] or the French [name]Geoffroy[/name] would be lovely.

I think [name]Godfrey[/name] is one of the coolest names ever, and I especially like the significance to you. [name]Godfrey[/name] was actually on my list for a while as a middle name option. [name]Godfrey[/name] would be awesome as a middle name, but most guys won’t be able to pull it off as a first name.

For some reason it reminds me of a monk!

I actually really like it  [name]Even[/name] though it has the word ‘god’ in it I don’t actually notice it or associate the name with God.

I’m going to have to be honest. Yes, [name]Godfrey[/name] would definitely cause teasing, at least around here. I also don’t think of it as a “timeless classic” (but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad name). Kids and society are cruel. As a MN, it would be great.

I like it! Sure “God” is in it, but lots of names have inteteresting words involved and do just fine. If it were me, I would use it as a middle name though, just because while I think its cool I know many may not like it was their name, but a middle, awesome! [name]Love[/name] that it has family significance to you as well.

Thanks for the reply, I have been trying to think along alternative lines but I think [name]Gottfried[/name] with no [name]German[/name] connection would be to difficult to explain and I know a truly awful [name]Geoffrey[/name] who has put me off the name for life. Maybe the Italian [name]Giotto[/name]? My husband ([name]Sean[/name]) has forbidden any crazy Irish spellings after a lifetime of misplaced ‘h’ and 'w’s. Also I’d still prefer [name]Godfrey[/name]. Oh dear.

Many thanks for all the input, maybe we need to go with it as a middle name. Thus the search begins again.

I don’t care for it. It is a common enough last name where I live and I can’t wrap my mind around it as a first name. I really don’t care for the “god” part of the name.

I like the name in concept, but as has been mentioned would worry about the ‘God’ part of the name. It stands out pretty significantly to my ear, especially since it’s the emphasized part of the name. For a MN, I think it’d be stellar, for a FN I personally would shy away from it.

I agree with Javad… it would make an excellent mn. It’s too bad that you don’t like [name]Geoffrey[/name], it’s a strong, unique name imo  But I understand aversions to names. I

[name]How[/name] about [name]Frey[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name] = the beginning sounds like the end of [name]Godfrey[/name]
[name]Godfrey[/name] means God’s peace… other names that mean peace (as a way of honouring your family member):
[name]Solomon[/name]
[name]Garvey[/name]
[name]Paxton[/name]

Oooh [name]Solomon[/name] goes with my love of [name]Moses[/name] and [name]Abraham[/name] but I fear would meet a similar response from my husband that they are fab names but hard to pull off if you’re not Jewish.

I think [name]Godfrey[/name] is a beautiful name, although not a typical timeless classic.

Go with [name]Geoffrey[/name] and give him the charming nn of Joff, (I see that blade likes [name]Geoffrey[/name] too). I don’t know why but I feel that [name]Hugo[/name] has the same vibe as [name]Godfrey[/name] and it is much more usable imo.

[name]Geoffrey[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] or [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Geoffrey[/name] would be a great combo!

rollo

I love [name]Gideon[/name]. I am fond of [name]Gabriel[/name]. I like [name]Gavin[/name] more than my husband thinks I ought to, and have an abiding affection for [name]Gareth[/name] that I cannot explain. [name]Gregory[/name] is cool to me, if not to anyone else.

I do not like [name]Geoffrey[/name] at all, and I’m sorry OP but I don’t like [name]Godfrey[/name] either.

Many thanks for the votes, I think we would have gone for [name]Godfrey[/name] but the arrival of [name]Felicity[/name] solved the dilemma!
