Going for Preppy, Southern, and Timeless

Good morning, berries!

DH and I are [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], and after much debate and agonizing, I believe we have settled on [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] for our baby girl due in two weeks! My favorite name was really [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], but I just didn’t feel like we could be [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] with a baby [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] after that other family beat me to it.

We considered other lovely things like [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and even some less “on-brand” things like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], but in the end, we felt like [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] was the most “us.”

That being said, we’re very preppy and Southern and while we weren’t going to go to the extent of the whole maiden name as a first name thing, we want our girl’s name to reflect that Southern, preppy style.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] accomplishes that? What do you think when you hear it?

As far as what we actually call her on a day-to-day basis, which one of these accomplishes that the best:

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (full double name)
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

We’ve already been through and nixed the other nickname options (not fans of [name_f]Vicky[/name_f], [name_f]Tory[/name_f], [name_f]Tia[/name_f], [name_f]Ria[/name_f], [name_f]Toria[/name_f], [name_f]Via[/name_f], [name_f]Vita[/name_f], [name_f]Plum[/name_f], etc.)

Thanks so much!

I think [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (first and middle) with the nickname [name_f]Cora[/name_f] best accomplishes a preppy, Southern feel.

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is beautiful!! When I hear preppy, Southern, I think of:

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

I also think of [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] as a southern preppy name. [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is more English royal than southern preppy to me. I think [name_f]Cora[/name_f]-[name_f]Jane[/name_f] sounds the most southern but I’m not a huge fan of non-traditional nicknames ([name_f]Cora[/name_f] for [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is a bit of a stretch to me). Maybe [name_u]Jean[/name_u] instead of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] would make it more southern?

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is lovely, and I think it fits that Southern preppy style pretty well. For a nickname, [name_u]Rory[/name_u] or [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] sound most Southern preppy to me.

Thank you! For the record, we do love [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but it’s so common down here, basically every third girl we know is named [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]! I agree it’s right on point, though. And people forget that [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is also an English royal name (just not used as memorably or recently)!

I love [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], or just [name_f]Cora[/name_f].

[name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] feels the most southern, but it doesn’t have a “preppy” or timeless feel to me. I would go for [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] or [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

I’m Southern through-and-through, and to me, [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] does not evoke that sense of “southern charm”. It is a very beautiful name, and while I think [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could work, [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is more elegant and royal than preppy and Southern.

Here are a few names that, in my opinion, epitomize the “southern, preppy, timeless” feel you’re describing:

[name_f]Della[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_u]Sutton[/name_u]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]
[name_f]Ansley[/name_f]/[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Reese[/name_u]

If you want a truly Southern name, go double-barreled. I love these combos because she can choose to go by her first or middle name, or as a double name:

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Cate[/name_f]
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Cate[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Della[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Della[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ansley[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilly[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilly[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilly[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]

Again, just some suggestions. I think you can give many names a “southern spin” so to speak…my rule of thumb here is to make sure your first and middle names are easy to be hollered together when she’s pitching a toddler fit!

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] doesn’t feel southern preppy to me, although [name_f]Tori[/name_f] does. [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] has the most southern feel to me, especially because it works as a double-barreled name. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] seems southern too, but less preppy. Other ideas:

[name_f]Amy[/name_f] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]
[name_f]Anabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] [name_u]Leigh[/name_u]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Kelly[/name_u] [name_f]Ann[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_u]Leighton[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_u]Waverly[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]

I think a [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] could also go by [name_f]Vera[/name_f], which is super preppy to me!

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_u]Chelsea[/name_u]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (top choice)
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (maybe double-barreled)
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (especially shortened and double-barreled)
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] (very southern and close-but-not-too-close to [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f])
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
_______-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]
[name_f]Alicia[/name_f]/[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] ([name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Hettie[/name_f], or [name_f]Etta[/name_f])
[name_f]Elaina[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]

Ooh! I’m from the South… [name_f]Cora[/name_f] sounds southern to me. Other names I think of:

[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] (not a fan of this personally, though)
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]

Anything with the middle name ‘[name_f]Grace[/name_f]’ ‘[name_f]Ann[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_u]Lynn[/name_u]’ I have a few of those middle names floating around in my family.

Thanks so much for all your input, ladies! I definitely know we could go more Southern (and how to do it), but we’ve been through [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and just didn’t like them as much as our “timeless” options. So I was just wondering if people think [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could still pass. But now I’m wondering if we should go back to [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and just use [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], which is the most Southern sounding to me. Hmmm…

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] doesn’t scream ‘Southern’ to me but does sound timeless. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is the nn that makes the most sense to me. I adore [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] but don’t think it really makes sense as a nn here. [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], however, does sound equally if not more lovely to me than [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. Plus, it lends itself to [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] easier, and that definitely fits the timeless, preppy, Southern bill. Good luck!

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are both beautiful. I say forget going with a cetain theme and pick which one you love most. I’m as Southern as they come. Most anything goes. I hear more bad/trendy/unisex names than the lovely preppy style you are going for. If you are going to call her [name_f]Cora[/name_f], then I would name her [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. It’s pretty perfect as well.

I think Victoria Jane and Cordelia Jane are both timeless and classy. It is not a matter of does the name fit into this very tight box that you feel you want, but at the same time don’t really want. It is a matter of do like these gorgeous, glamorous names that still fit in with a broader definition of you naming style, and for that matter, you. I can, for one, definitely imagine a preppy southern girl named Victoria.

Edit:
I don’t think Victoria needs a nickname, but I like Victoria Jane.

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is pretty but now that you mention [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], I love that one! My cousin is [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] so I definitely know that the name can steer Southern preppy, but if you don’t like the nicknames, I would choose [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] and go with [name_f]Cora[/name_f] for short.

I absolutely love both [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], and [name_f]Cora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could work as a nn for both. Pick the one you love the most!
