Hello, everyone! I’m sorry for the lengthy post/ramble.
As a namenerd I am a big fan of mythological names, be it Greek, Norse or Slavic.
One of my old favorites is [name_f]Circe[/name_f]. I’ve recently come across a real life [name_f]Circe[/name_f] on facebook (she is a friend of an acquaintance) and it just reminded me of how much I adore this name. SO is on board, but…
Our biggest worry is that when people hear that we’ve chosen [name_f]Circe[/name_f], they will assume it’s spelled Cersei (because pronunciation is the same) and that we named her after the SOIAF/Game of Thrones character. We have both watched the show and we are aware how unfortunate the association with the character is.
We are both not really sure if it should be a dealbreaker, and usually I think it shouldn’t because franchises and series will usually fade out. But because the name is not as common it is usually more tied to the show/book etc. ([name_f]Luna[/name_f] vs [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], for example).
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you guys feel toward this kind of thing?
I also love the name [name_f]Circe[/name_f], and I think because the spelling is different it would be obvious, at least when written down, that she was certainly not named AFTER Cersei. When introducing her verbally you could always say, after the goddess, or the myth or however you want to put it. I’m guessing in the next 5 years or so, before your [name_f]Circe[/name_f] starts school, the character will have faded away. I think if you both love it you should use it.
Since I have never met a real-life [name_f]Circe[/name_f], I would probably think of GOT. Also I only watched the show and didn’t read the books, so I wouldn’t know that the spelling was different. Personally I would probably avoid it but just depends how much you care what other people think of your naming choices.
I know a real life [name_f]Circe[/name_f]. It is a beautiful name and (although I love GOT) I don’t think GOT when I hear it. I say go for it.
As an aside, one of the complaints I have heard about my name is that it might be compared to a certain annoying cartoon character. What’s worse is that our last names are also extremely similar. I’m 24, and not one person has ever mentioned it. Like the poster mentioned above, these things tend to fade.
I think it’s fine, but I also don’t hate Cersei Lannister like most people seem to. [name_f]Circe[/name_f]/Cersei isn’t tied to ASOIAF in the same way that something like [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] is.
I would probably not make the GOT connection at all (I’ve never watched it). I think [name_f]Circe[/name_f] would be fine.
I made the connection, but I also do every time I hear of a baby [name_f]Aria[/name_f]/[name_u]Arya[/name_u]. It would depend on the person.
I would not use [name_f]Circe[/name_f], because of both the mythical character and Cersei Lannister.
