Gray for a girl

My husband and I found out we are pregnant with our third baby! We already have two boys ([name_m]Connor[/name_m] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]). We agreed on [name_u]Gray[/name_u] for a girl which I’m so excited about! I’ve only told my mother so far and judging from her reaction I think we aren’t going to be telling anyone our names until the baby is born! She was not a fan at all! We live in a small MidWest town and I’m now afraid that using a name so off center could be a potential problem. What do the Berries think? Is [name_u]Gray[/name_u] too out there for a girl?

I don’t think it’s too out there for a girl at all. It might be a hassle though, she’ll probably be called [name_f]Grace[/name_f] quite often.

I agree that she’ll probably get called [name_f]Grace[/name_f] a lot by accident.

I don’t think it’s too weird at all, just not everyone’s cup of tea! If you love and both agree on it, just do it!

I knew a girl called [name_f]Gracen[/name_f] who went by Grae as a nn… not my style either, but there are others out there

I prefer [name_u]Grey[/name_u] in the middle spot, but it’s totally fine as a fn for a girl!

[name_u]Grey[/name_u] is sort of “meh” in my opinion. I don’t love it and I don’t hate it. It’s just… grey and sort of muddy sounding. Also will always get misspelled depending on whether people write [name_u]Grey[/name_u] or [name_u]Gray[/name_u]. And will be misinterpreted as [name_f]Grace[/name_f].
Being totally honest, I don’t think [name_u]Grey[/name_u] will get a lot of compliments on her name.

The connotations for [name_u]Gray[/name_u] are: old, stale, pale, weak, distant, frail, in-between, etc. It’s really not a positive sounding name.

Also just think about meeting an old woman with gray hair named “[name_u]Gray[/name_u]”. That would just be unfortunate and you’d sort of feel sorry for her.

I love it! Its short, sweet and on trend.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] or [name_m]Greyson[/name_m]? [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], and [name_u]Mason[/name_u] are used for many girls, so why not? [name_u]Gray[/name_u] just seems a little incomplete for my taste.

I think it’s quite good either way!

I would definitely prefer it as a middle name. It doesn’t work so well as a first name for me. And I completely agree, she will spend a lot of time being called [name_f]Grace[/name_f].

I see [name_u]Gray[/name_u]/[name_u]Grey[/name_u] as a male option. Technically, as it is a modern word name that has only recently started to be used as a first name, it is unisex. However, just like the similarly modern word name [name_f]Willow[/name_f] has sort of become synonymous with femininity, [name_u]Gray[/name_u]/[name_u]Grey[/name_u] has become quite strongly entangled with masculinity.

Putting that aside, I myself cannot imagine looking down at a beautiful baby - a bright, shining new life, and settling on naming it “[name_u]Gray[/name_u]” - a colour that I love, but that is dull, sombre and even morose. The image that the colour invokes is not a particularly pleasant one, so I admit that I’m not keen on [name_u]Gray[/name_u] as a first name for a girl, or a boy, for that matter.

I agree with the other users who have said that [name_f]Grace[/name_f] might be a better first name alternative, or that [name_u]Gray[/name_u] would make a better middle name. I don’t believe that girl names need to be long and frilly, but [name_u]Gray[/name_u] as a first name is blunt, and lacking in distinction, in my opinion, at least.

I like it on a guy, it sounds horrible on a girl, imo.

To me [name_u]Gray[/name_u] is unisex however I prefer it as a middle name or as a nickname for [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] (or any other ‘[name_u]Gray[/name_u]’ name). As a firstname it comes across a bit too bland and boring (although that is my opinion). What I would say is picture your daughter as an adult introducing herself, does [name_u]Gray[/name_u] still suit her?

I consider myself super open minded on names, but I’m sorry…not a fan at all. What about as a middle name? Like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]? I think [name_u]Gray[/name_u], unlike the other ‘color’ names could have a negative connotation with it, like it is a little gray outside, or drab and gray. Sorry! I think phonetically it is lovely, but not my taste. If you love it though, who cares!

Somewhat in the minority here, but I love it! I prefer the spelling [name_u]Grey[/name_u], but [name_u]Gray[/name_u] is nice as well. I think any color has both negative and positive connotations…to me, the color gray evokes misty, rainy skies (I absolutely love rain…like I’m obsessed, you have no idea lol), steaming cups of tea, the smoke from a blown-out candle…it has a lovely, quiet, introspective aura about it. I do prefer it as a middle name, but I think it’s great as a first name as well!
