I love the nicknames [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Margie[/name_f] but both are traditionally for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] could have both nicknames or are they so different it could get confusing?
Also, how completely ridiculous do you think it would be to have sisters with names that are very closely related but don’t sound it and wouldn’t necessarily be thought of as such by most people? For example, if you had [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] “[name_f]Margie[/name_f]” or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. As a final question, do you prefer [name_f]Greta[/name_f] or [name_f]Margie[/name_f]?
I think it’s totally fine for a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] to be nicknamed both [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Margie[/name_f]. My two-year-old son [name_m]William[/name_m] goes mostly by [name_m]Liam[/name_m], but sometimes we call him [name_m]Will[/name_m], and he responds to both with no confusion.
I wouldn’t, however, use variations of the same name for siblings. It feels like giving them the same name to me.
I prefer [name_f]Greta[/name_f] of the two. My name is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Marge[/name_f]/[name_f]Margie[/name_f] is my absolute least favorite nickname for it. (Makes me think of the Simpsons character.) If I wasn’t already a [name_f]Meg[/name_f] or [name_f]Margo[/name_f], I’d much rather be a [name_f]Greta[/name_f] than a [name_f]Margie[/name_f]!
(I also think you could use [name_f]Margery[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], since it seems you really like [name_f]Margery[/name_f] but also like [name_f]Greta[/name_f], which doesn’t work as well as a nickname for [name_f]Margery[/name_f]. It’s like using [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m]. Totally works, [name_f]IMO[/name_f].)
I don’t think the same person that call [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Margie[/name_f] would call her [name_f]Greta[/name_f]. The two nicknames are possible, however I believe [name_f]Margie[/name_f] is the most obvious one.
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] (nothing alike. GO FOR IT)
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] (similar, still usable. [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_u]Isa[/name_u]/[name_f]Bella[/name_f])
PS: I know two sisters, one named [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and the other, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Lazy parents. They go as [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f].
Last answer: I prefer [name_f]Greta[/name_f].
