[name_m]Hal[/name_m] is nms, but I think a nn doesn’t need to be a literal short form of the actual fn. I know plenty of people whose nns do not resemble their fns at all, and I have not heard any negative remarks about it.
If you like it, go for it.
Well, [name_m]Hal[/name_m] has been a nickname for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] since medieval times so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
Yes. This is precisely why we like it…it’s not new or made up, although it is uncommon.
[name_m]Hal[/name_m] happens to be my favourite nn for [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. It has such a friendly and approachable vibe much like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_m]Will[/name_m] do. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!
Exactly why we chose it…as my husband said “if [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] can use it, why can’t we?”
This is really great to get a gauge of what others think when they hear it…not very commonplace today unless you are exposed to [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] or a history buff (like my husband). We love it (and so does our son) but just curious on reactions - not that it will ultimately change our mind, just fun to get a peek into what other REALLY think of [name_m]Hal[/name_m] as a nn for [name_m]Henry[/name_m] :).
I will check out [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m] Branaugh’s adaption of [name_m]Henry[/name_m] V. Thank you!!
I agree
I think [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]Hal[/name_m] is one of [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s greatest characters! It’s a wonderful nickname for your little [name_m]Henry[/name_m].
[name_f]Lovely[/name_f]. Thank you
