Hello! I have some questions here about Halia/Hali’a and was hoping some Berries would be able to help me out…
My ex was Hawaiian and he absolutely adored this name. During this time I wasn’t super active here, so I didn’t really look into the name much. But now, almost a year later, I’ve been wondering about this name! The internet is telling me all sorts of different things about this name, and I’m not sure what’s true and what’s not.
Some sources say this name has Greek origins/significance - @tallemaja, could you confirm/deny?
Others say that this name is very popular in Hawai’i while almost unused in continental US. I follow a girl on TikTok whose name is Hali’a with the apostrophe, but I haven’t encountered it spelt like that anywhere else online!
Does this name have both Hawaiian and Greek origins? What is the actual meaning?
Just for fun, what do you think of the name?
- Cool name!
- Cool for someone else!
- Not my taste!
Note: I have no plans of using this name as I’m not Greek or Hawaiian! Just think it’s quite beautiful and interested to get the full story
Funnily enough Hali’a has actually featured on a birth announcement off an old school friend. It’s a name that isn’t my style however I can appreciate the beachy vibes she provides.

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], cool! Was she from either Hawai’i or Greece? I totally agree with you on the beach vibes.
No she and her partner are Jamaican descent. I think Hawaiian names are fashionable my friend (she’s Bajan) her daughter is Lelan1 another Hawaiian name and at my daughter nursery there is a Noelan1 her parents are from Trinidad. I think maybe Hawaiian names are popular within the Caribbean community but it could just be a coincidence and I’m making a sweeping statement

i had to do a bit of research because i’d never heard of it before! there was in fact an ancient greek nymph named halia, associated with the island of rhodes, as well as a few other minor figures - but the romanization is responsible for this spelling/pronunciation. in the original greek form, the name is spelt alia (αλία) & pronounced like aaliyah (ah-LEE-ah), with no H sound at the start. the H sound version wouldn’t work in greek anyway haha, because it sounds similar to our word for “messy, terrible” (hália). it also supposedly had 2 forms, depending on the region: (h)alia or (h)alie, pronounced ah-LEE-ee, and it means “resident of the sea”. it’s not a name that’s currently in use in greece either way, regardless of pronunciation & spelling! (or if it is in use, it’s rare enough that i’d never come across it)

I love this name
I’d only seen it in a Hawaiian context before this thread.
I believe @lumosmaxima and @halinka have had Hali’a on their lists and might be able to give more information?

thanks for the tag @ellerbea!
I absolutely adore Hali’a!!
She goes back and forth between “realistic use” and “gp” on my list. To be honest, I love all versions of Hali’a/Halia/Haliya/etc.
Hali’a is Hawai’ian meaning “fond remembrance”; I tend to lean towards this origin and meaning more because the meaning is more significant to me (and I have a penchant for Hawai’an names). I’ve never met a Hali’a so I can’t say how popular she is, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see high popularity in Hawai’i.

Wow I love that meaning - how beautiful! Thanks [name_f]Eva[/name_f]
I wonder how appropriate it is for a non-Hawaiian to use?

This is such a good breakdown, thank you so much [name_f]Maya[/name_f] for this! That’s fascinating how the name has evolved over time. But what a beautiful meaning!

To be totally honest, it makes me think of halitosis
. Sorry, it’s an intrusive / unwelcome thought, but it’s there. This, for me, spoils a name which otherwise has some objective prettiness, albeit nms.
Omg hahah that’s totally random, but I can totally see where you’re coming from

I love the name Hali’a! It has been on my list for forever. I’ll probably never use it because I am not native Hawaiian/Kanaka, but Hawaiian culture has been really important to me in my life! Hali’a is Hawaiian given name, it means “sudden remembrance,” usually of a loved one! But is also used to signify a premonition, a message, etc. The okina is a glottal stop, so it’s always pronounced ha LEE’uh (like uh oh). In 'Ōlelo Hawai’i, “hali’a” can also mean “carry,” an object or otherwise! I think Hali’a is really, really special!

I’m not sure about the usability as a non-Hawaiian; this is something I go back and forth about. On the one hand, I don’t really believe in “cultural name gatekeeping” so to speak, but I know it would be unusual for a non-Hawaiian to use Hali’a. Also, due to the significance of the meaning, I’m not sure if it’d be exactly appropriate for someone w/o Hawai’ian heritage? That’s something I’d have to look into a bit more.
On the other hand, I feel like [name_f]Halia[/name_f] is more multicultural and less likely to be tied straight to Hawai’ian culture though, so she might be more usable?
So to reiterate, [name_f]Halia[/name_f] may be more usuable than Hali’a but I guess it depends on the individual situation. Like for me, I’m also not of Hawai’ian descent, but the meaning has personal significance to me, so I think it might be okay for me to use (especially if I maybe spelled it without the apostrophe (if that makes any difference
.) so it’s more culturally versatile… Idk, that was just a personal ramble, but again, I really think it depends on your personal situation!
I love this name but don’t know if I could use it because of the Hawaiian origins. I’m not familiar with the Greek origins but I was confusing myself because there are a couple Polish names that are very similar (Hania, Halina) that I keep confusing with [name_f]Halia[/name_f]. [name_f]Halina[/name_f] is a variant of [name_f]Galina[/name_f] which is a variant of the Greek [name_m]Galen[/name_m], but, as has been shared already, the Greek origins are from Greek mythology and the etymology isn’t related to [name_m]Galen[/name_m] at all.
[name_f]Hania[/name_f] I know has no ties to [name_f]Halia[/name_f] - [name_f]Hania[/name_f] is to [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] what [name_f]Anya[/name_f] is to [name_f]Anna[/name_f] in Russian; which I adore but doesn’t really have anything to do with this topic lol!
I’m a big fan of Hawai’ian names and Hali’a is no exception; I just don’t think it fits with the majority of the other names on my list and also hesitate to use Hawai’ian names without any ties to their culture. I also feel like Kailei, Hali’a, Auli’i etc. just don’t really fit with [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] very well, ha.
