Halle vs. Hallie (and any negative associations?)

Yesterday I posted asking about how you would pronounce Halle, as I was afraid it would be constantly mispronounced. It seems like most people would pronounce it the way I do (Hal-ee, rhyming with Callie), so that made me feel better. I’m sure it’s inevitable that some people will get it wrong, but I have a straightforward name (Kristen), and people get it wrong more often than they get it right, so oh well. Lol. I brought it up to my husband last night and he didn’t shoot it down immediately, which is a huge win for us. :joy: It’s officially on the maybe list.

So now I’m debating between Halle and Hallie spellings. I prefer Halle, but husband prefers Hallie. I feel like Halle looks more like a full name where Hallie looks more like a nickname to me. I also feel like Halle might wear better as an adult instead of a spelling that looks more like a diminutive form of something. His only reason that he gave for not liking the Halle spelling was Halle Berry, which isn’t a big deal to me.

Besides the spelling, what downsides to the name can you think of? Stupid rhyming words? Any type of vulgar connotations? The only thing I came up with was Halibut, and I read someone brought up Halitosis, so I’m trying to figure out if that bothers me or not… Any others? Or opinions?

Thanks!

I do prefer [name_f]Hallie[/name_f], but my style for girls is largely “early 20th century -ie nickname names”, so that’s why.

I don’t love the [name_u]Halle[/name_u] [name_u]Berry[/name_u] association because, to me, she’s the only one with that spelling. So it feels kind of like a celebrity honor name (like [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] or [name_f]Eilish[/name_f] or Charlize). I do KNOW that it’s a legitimate alternative spelling and I think it has genuine Scandinavian roots. I’m just telling you about my personal perception because I think it will be similar to others’ perceptions, especially noting that I’m a name nerd and KNOW [name_u]Halle[/name_u] is legit outside of Berry… some may not.

Yeah, Halitosis was my only negative association to the sound of [name_f]Hallie[/name_f], until you mentioned Halibut. But I still love it, and I would still use it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] maybe not [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] or [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f], to further remove yourself from those sounds. :+1:

I prefer [name_u]Halle[/name_u], and know a girl whose name is spelled that way. I think it’s more striking and elegant. But I don’t mind the other spelling, and if it’s a deal breaker for your husband I’d go with it. I do think [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] might get confused for [name_u]Haley[/name_u] more often than [name_u]Halle[/name_u].

@bjoy Thank you! I agree. I think it looks more elegant as well, and I also feel like [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] would likely get mistaken for [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] more often. Most of the comments I could find online from parents who named their daughters [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] said they wished they’d gone with [name_u]Halle[/name_u] for that reason. I didn’t see anyone who went with [name_u]Halle[/name_u] say they wished they’d done [name_f]Hallie[/name_f].

I can’t think of any obvious negatives to Hallie/Halle.

[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favourite spelling is [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] - this actually looks more complete to me for some reason :woman_shrugging:t3:

I prefer [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]! It looks more complete to me, and I find it less confusing. [name_u]Halle[/name_u] might trip me up more than [name_f]Hallie[/name_f], which I don’t don’t looks similar enough to any spelling of [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] to be confusing. That said… I have a cousin [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] who does get confused for [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] fairly frequently. But, I’m a [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] who also gets confused for [name_f]Hayley[/name_f]. [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] is just more common, so it happens regardless.

I like the [name_u]Halle[/name_u] [name_u]Berry[/name_u] and [name_u]Halle[/name_u] [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] (singer / actress who will be in one of the new live-action Disney movies soon, so maybe that will help people become extra familia with the [name_u]Halle[/name_u] spelling) connections to [name_u]Halle[/name_u] as a point of reference for spelling. And they’re cool ladies, so I’m into it!

But I do most definitely prefer the spunk, simplicity, and sweetness of [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]! :tulip:

[name_u]Halle[/name_u] makes me think of [name_u]Halle[/name_u] [name_u]Berry[/name_u]. It’s actually her association that makes this name pronunciation seem straightforward. [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] on the other hand makes me think of [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] Lohan who played [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] [name_u]Parker[/name_u] in the Parent Trap.

I love [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]! It’s on my shortlist for a girl. I prefer [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] to [name_u]Halle[/name_u] because [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] looks like a legitimate name to me whereas [name_u]Halle[/name_u] just looks a bit off and I always then want to pronounce it as “Hal”.

[name_f]Hallie[/name_f] used to be my #1 pick for a girl however it has fallen down the list for me since I worry about spelling and mispronunciation issues (my name is always misspelled and said wrong) plus there’s also a [name_u]Haley[/name_u] and [name_u]Holly[/name_u] in the extended family so I worry it would be too confusing for us.

I think [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] is a very sweet and gentle name but is strong enough to stand on its own as well so if you aren’t bothered by an occasional spelling or pronunciation issue then I say go for it!

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was that I didn’t care one way or another, I really like both spellings! But then I do agree [name_u]Halle[/name_u] looks more grown up. But if your husband prefers [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] and it’d keep the option on your list, I’d make that compromise personally!

I prefer [name_u]Halle[/name_u], not even sure why, I’m just drawn to it more. I think it’s probably for the same reasons you said. [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] is also perfectly nice though. I can’t think of any negative associations. I also like it spelled [name_u]Halley[/name_u] (like the comet) but that’s probably even more likely to be pronounced as [name_f]Hailey[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]! I knew a little [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] and nobody mixed her name up (even in a class with a [name_f]Hayley[/name_f] and a Hailie)
I always want to pronounce [name_u]Halle[/name_u] like [name_m]Hal[/name_m]

I am also aware of Halle Bailey but otherwise this is my take as well. I also think Hallie looks like the more intuitive spelling. I had never thought of halibut or halitosis. I live in a city that’s often nicknamed Hali (same pronunciation) but also don’t connect the name Halle/Hallie to it.

I like Hallie in general, though!

I prefer [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] because the pronunciation just makes more sense to me. [name_u]Halle[/name_u] looks like it should just be [name_m]Hal[/name_m] (even though I know that’s not right and I wouldn’t pronunce it that way, it just sort of confuses my brain).
