Hamish, Tavish and Angus?

Liking [name_m]Hamish[/name_m], [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] and [name_m]Angus[/name_m] at the moment.

Looking for Scottish / Scotch Gaelic names that are easy to pronounce, recognise and spell.

Any other suggestions based on these names for baby boy?

[name_u]Nick[/name_u] names options for these three names?
[name_m]Angus[/name_m] might be [name_u]Gus[/name_u] but [name_u]Tavi[/name_u] and [name_m]Ham[/name_m] aren’t really my thing. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The sh / s endings are a coincidence so not specifically looking for this ending sound.

Thanks in advance. Really struggling to find The One.

I love [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] and [name_m]Angus[/name_m]!

[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] could be [name_m]Hank[/name_m], [name_m]Huck[/name_m], [name_m]Mitch[/name_m]
[name_m]Tavish[/name_m] could be [name_u]Tate[/name_u], Vee, [name_f]Tash[/name_f]

[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] - Mish, [name_f]Ami[/name_f] (look up [name_f]Ami[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u] for prn - [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-mee)
[name_m]Tavish[/name_m] - Vish (kinda cutesy but Vish upon a star)

[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]

[name_m]Duncan[/name_m] or Murtagh?

I’ve got a [name_m]Callum[/name_m] and a [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], and of the two I’d say [name_m]Callum[/name_m] has been a lot easier both in the US and internationally. I’d love a [name_m]Fraser[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m], or [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] in the future. [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] would be awesome too! My husband loves [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] but I never quite fell for it.

My son is named [name_m]Ewan[/name_m], and I’m a bit surprised people often don’t have any idea how to pronounce it, but it’s easily pronounceable once they know how.

The most common nickname I’ve come across for Hamish as Hami - pronounced Haa-me or Ami - pronounced Aah-me. But to be honest, they’re all old men, the younger ones tend to be just Hamish.

We’re having the same issues. Our older son is [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and we can’t find anything we love as much. I really like all your names and they are on my long list.

Some others on my long list are:

[name_m]Struan[/name_m]
[name_m]Ewan[/name_m]
[name_m]Fergus[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_m]Laird[/name_m]
[name_m]Duncan[/name_m]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u]
[name_m]Callen[/name_m]
[name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]

Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]

@dechen I love [name_m]Callum[/name_m] but it’s very close, to close, to DH’s name. Thanks for the suggestions.

@greyblue love [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] but it reminds me of the playschool frog and it’s a name image I can’t get past. [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] was considered but we’re in Australia and [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] Island is where dingos eat babies. We’re pretty close to it too so I’d say that’s out. Huge outlander fans though so this was a hard one to decide. Isn’t it funny how we all have tiny little images of what a name is/means. Thank you for your reply.

@lysia [name_f]Ami[/name_f]- i feel like people would assume it was [name_f]Amy[/name_f]. It’s very hard to find a NN. Maybe [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] doesn’t need one straight away and would collect one as time went on, maybe even something a bit obscure and not name related. I like Vish for [name_m]Tavish[/name_m]. But I feel the whole name might be a bit wishy-washy outside of [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]. DH’s favourite though. Thank you

@oftenoverseas what lovely names your sons have. Very handsome sibset. I hope to follow suit. Like I said, I love [name_m]Callum[/name_m] but think it’s unusable for our family. [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is my oldest relative on the family tree! Maybe one to consider. I wish my hisband loved [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Thank you.

Another idea is [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], which is currently #126 in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f].

@angibs [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] is a lovely name. [name_m]Will[/name_m] see what DH thinks of this one. Thanks for sharing.

@islandmoon Wow that’s a lovely, long list! Thanks! Lots to think about.

@sassy your sons name [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is handsome, although wouldn’t work in our family. I’ve never heard of [name_m]Callen[/name_m] before and love [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. Thanks!

@sbw ooh I was just on another recent forum post about Scottish names and saw your signature. I love love [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] but DH really doesn’t. I think [name_u]Gus[/name_u] is so sweet and wearable but alas, this one can’t be negotiated at all. Thanks.

I love [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] and [name_m]Angus[/name_m]! I will say we know someone named [name_m]Aengus[/name_m] (but we live in the Midwest US so…) and people mispronounce it all the time, even if they don’t see the spelling, as [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. Or they say, “[name_m]Angus[/name_m], like the beef?” Not a huge deal but something to think of, although I think I saw you live in Australia? Maybe [name_m]Angus[/name_m] is more common place there.

Another idea-my best friend named her son [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] and he goes by [name_m]Mac[/name_m]. I think it’s so cute!

@bmheckathorn
Thanks. Yes we are in Australia but [name_m]Angus[/name_m] beef is a thing here too.
DH expressed interest in [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] but we know so many girls under 12 with this name. It’s very cute but I don’t think it suits us.

We seem to be leaning towards [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] right now. Mother IL seems to think it sounds like describing the flavour of ham. I’m sorry I asked her. ” hoping well either settle or fall in love with something soon.
