My husband & I have a difficult last name, so I’ve often thought we’d name our kids with easy first names. One of our favorite names is [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] but I’m wondering if that isn’t simple enough.
What do you think, when reading the name [name_f]Odelia[/name_f], do you feel confident in pronouncing it?
It’s fine. It might give a few people a hard time at first but it’s spelled pretty phonetically and it’s not very long. Plus, it’s pretty, so pooh-pooh to anyone who can’t deal with it!
I wouldn’t worry too much, people will pick it up soon enough. When we named our son I was terribly worried people wouldn’t remember his name and mispronounce it all the time, but most people do fine.
I don’t see what would be difficult to pronounce? Go for it if you love it, you might have to explain to someone at first but I think most would understand how to pronounce it
I agree with others. It might be confused with ophelia which isnt heard a lot anyway but i think once you say it is fine. Id ask if its to be pronounced o deal ya or oh deal ee ah but i wonder that for ophelia too. I know a maybe delia and everyone seems to like it and its so cute! Good luck
Thanks for everyone’s input! I’m not too concerned about people we know, it’s more for everyday things like coffee shops, travel, school & so forth.
My [name_m]SIL[/name_m] has a really difficult first name & with our last name she finds it frustrating. We have 10 weeks left, so I’ll keep this name on the list but also look at others, appreciate the ideas.
I think [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] is one of those names you’d always have to spell out/tell people how to pronounce, but once you have I don’t think you’d have issues. It’s an unusual name but doesn’t have any sounds that English speakers struggle to produce.
I think it’s lovely! I have [name_f]Odilia[/name_f] on my own list, so I’m probably biased, but I think it’s so straightforward, with a lovely meaning, and has some sweet nicknames, too, like [name_f]Lia[/name_f] or [name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Dia[/name_f]! I think people might mistakenly assume [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] since it sounds similar, but [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous and I think it’s straightforward enough for a complicated surname.
I agree that it’s not difficult for an English speaker, at least [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I’d say Oh-DEEL-ee-ah, & most likely ask if that’s correct just to be sure.
I think with [name_f]Delia[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] being common names, and [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] being easily recognized by many as a [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] character, you wouldn’t run into many pronunciation issues in the English speaking world.
I think it’s perfectly fine! The worst I can imagine is having to correct that it’s [name_f]Odelia[/name_f], not [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]. But neither are actually common so I say go for it!
