Help us decide! Older siblings are William Atticus (“Atticus”) and Frances Elizabeth (“Franny”), which both have family name elements and literary references, and we want something that pairs well with them.
Our top contenders:
Matilda Jane (“Mattie”). Mattie is a family name, but there are so many Maddie/Madison/Madelyns that Mattie just feels a little plain and Matilda on its own feels maybe too…heavy?
Harriet Jane (“Hattie”). Hattie feels fresher to me and a spin on the honor name, and I like Harriet for a kid and adult. DH is okay with it but it’s not his favorite.
Ocie Opal. Another family name. Cute on a little girl but too cute for an adult??
I’m not married to Jane as a middle name and also like June, Sage, Rose, or Adams (family names).
We’ve also considered Dorothy/Dottie, Pollyanna/Polly as well as Cricket, Poppy, Lucy (those last three don’t feel “substantial” enough to go with the sibling names). Would love any feedback!
I love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] nn Dottie!! I think it fits in with your set beautifully!! I also think [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] sounds a little similar to [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] and [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], and both of those names also match [name_f]Franny[/name_f] because of the assonance. Its definitelt not too matchy for it not to work, but i think i just prefer the sound of [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] because then its completely different to siblings names!!
Matilda Jane is absolutely gorgeous! I don’t think Matilda is too heavy for a baby, but I do love the nicknames Tilly, Mia, & Tilda to go with it.
I also love the idea of Dorothy nn “Dottie” as it would get you the honor you are looking for. Both Matilda & Dorothy would be perfect next to her siblings Atticus & Franny
As a combo, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is my favourite. Such a joyful, bubbling, cheeky name! [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] doesn’t feel heavy at all!
But with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_f]Franny[/name_f], I think [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] has a lot more in common. [name_f]Vintage[/name_f], 40s vibe. [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] gives me the same vibe too.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] or [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] would be my options.
Matilda Jane sounds nice, though my first instinct is the clothing brand. Not necessarily a bad association, but just my first thought. Most people won’t make this connection. William, Frances, and Matilda all flow as well as Atticus, Franny, and Mattie. However, I might be a bit wary of the shared sound of Atticus and Mattie. This is the same for Hattie. Maybe to freshen it up amongst the Maddies, Tilda or Tillie as nicknames?
Harriet Jane is really sweet sounding, and Harriet will definitely age well. William, Frances, and Harriet sound great together. Not much else I can add.
Ocie Opal is nice that it’s an honor, though I must say it is a vastly different feel from your other children’s names.
Dorothy called Dottie is probably my favorite. It has the same feel as your other kids and can work on children or adults. Dorothy Jane or June would probably be my go-to.
Lucy definitely works amongst your other children! If you wanted a longer version, Lucille or Lucia might work.
i adore harriet! dorothy is also really cute, as well as cricket and poppy, but i agree the latter two feel less substantial than the sibling names. harriet jane is adorable, and it definitely sounds like you’re leaning towards harriet. harriet poppy or dorothy cricket could also be really cute!
I’m glad you mentioned the clothing brand because I had never heard of it!! Good to know! I also hadn’t thought about the Atticus/Mattie/Hattie similarities so also good feedback! Thanks!
I like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] more so than [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. If not a fan of [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], maybe [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Milly[/name_f], [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] or [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] would work.
Firstly I absolutely love your children’s names and the contenders are fabulous!
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is beautiful to me she feels homespun and sweet the complete opposite off heavy. I actually find [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] ‘heavier’ then [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. I think [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is a sweet nickname but I appreciate blending into the [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] however for me as [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] isn’t that popular where I am I don’t think that is a major issue. I really like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] especially with [name_u]William[/name_u] [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] & [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] ~ another gorgeous name [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] feels strong, dependable and elegant. I think she definitely works with [name_f]Frances[/name_f] & [name_u]William[/name_u]. [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] is a sweet nickname as well.
[name_u]Ocie[/name_u] [name_f]Opal[/name_f] ~ hmmm I’m not sure how do I pronounce [name_u]Ocie[/name_u]? I think [name_u]Ocie[/name_u] looks too informal in your sibling set but I do love [name_f]Opal[/name_f].
From your other ideas I think [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] would work wonders
I adore [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] being my fave! I know [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is a family name, but I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] covers that - would you consider another nickname -MJ, [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Mallie[/name_f], [name_f]Tilda[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Tillie[/name_f], Mimsy etc
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] is also fantastic- nn [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] is great!!
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] “Cricket” came to mind (Caroline is literary too!), as did [name_f]Paulina[/name_f] “Polly”, or [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] “Ginny”/“Immy”
I love [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] & [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] on their own. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] with a different nn would be great. I don’t like the repeating “att” sound with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] though.
Dorothy/Dottie [name_u]June[/name_u] is my favorite. It has the same vintage spunk of Frances/Franny.
I love [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] , [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] , [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is the most obvious literary connection and I think the potential nickname [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] could work for you too ! Which sounds a little different than if [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] ever goes by [name_f]Atti[/name_f] . I also love the nickname MJ
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] , [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_f]Tilly[/name_f] , [name_f]Franny[/name_f] and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
So [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is the family name and we backed into [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], so I hadn’t considered other nicknames. I LOVE [name_f]Millie[/name_f] but didn’t like [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] - had never thought to use it with [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]!
Thank you! [name_u]Ocie[/name_u] is “oh-see” and I agree it seems more like a nickname. I had never seriously considered [name_f]Opal[/name_f], but it is growing on me fast.
I love [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], I wouldn’t go with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as the middle as it feels a bit common. Does it have to be a family name? How about [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f].
I also really love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] nn [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]!
Looking at the other names you suggested I absolutely love [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. If you feel it is unsubstantial perhaps use it as a nickname for [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (Loo-see-uh or loo-chee-uh), [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] etc… there are so many variations.
I do also like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] though it is not my favourite. [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is cute though I much prefer [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]. If you are not sold on the name I wouldn’t go for it.
Those are my thoughts, good luck.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there! I really love your children’s names! And you have such wonderful options for this baby as well!
One of my daughter’s mn is [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], as it is a family name too. While [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is very common, I really love the [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] spelling as it feels spunky, fresh yet vintage. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is a really sweet combination. [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_f]Franny[/name_f], & [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is such a great sibling set!
I really, really love [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for you. [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_f]Franny[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is perfection. So stylish! Personally, I would look no further than [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_m]Adams[/name_m]. I love this combination.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is fun, and fits well in the sibling group. The [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] clothing came to mind immediately. I recommend passing on this combination due to the clothing line. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you sincerely love [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] though or was it a way to use the honor name [name_u]Mattie[/name_u]?
I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] match the other children fine. I suppose for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] or [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] are possibilities for nicknames as well.
I like [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] quite a bit “Dottie and Dory” have appeal
I think [name_f]Martha[/name_f] Roseadams would an odd but interesting combo middle name.
I think [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] would be better style wise over [name_u]Ocie[/name_u] which might work more for a nickname.
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] would be my pick to match with the older kids more consistently
