Havana?

What is everyones opinions on the name [name_u]Havana[/name_u]? Its reasonably common in Australia at 340 in [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (14 born) this is because of an Australian celebrity Dj [name_u]Havana[/name_u] [name_m]Brown[/name_m]. Is it too connected to the cuban crisis? Too place namey?

I think it sounds cool but it wouldn’t be something I use

I love the sound of it, too, but to me it’s a place name only.

Thank you
Ebony

I have always had a secret love for the name [name_u]Havana[/name_u], ever since I heard it as a little girl and was unaware that it was a place in [name_u]Cuba[/name_u]. I like that it is more unique than [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], and also has that trendy “V” sound like in [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. I would take the [name_u]Cuba[/name_u] connection into consideration, but don’t let it stop you if you truly love the name.

Thank you!

I can see the appeal aesthetically, but in the US at least i’d say no way - there are too many actual Cubans here, and the whole communist regime thing gives it kind of negative connotations as it is.

Yeah, I agree with pps–too controversial. I can see the temptation to use it as a name but even if [name_u]Cuba[/name_u] was a perfectly uneventful, stable country, it’d be weird to use it unless you had ties to the city.

I think considering the history of [name_u]Cuba[/name_u] and relations with [name_u]Cuba[/name_u], this makes the name unusable. Obviously place names as baby names have become more and more acceptable and I actually think if it weren’t for all the controversy with [name_u]Cuba[/name_u] in the first place, then it’d be same as any other. I think you’d pique a lot of interest with this name, and that some of that curiosity would be negative.

I think it’s fine, honestly.

It has a lovely sound.

There was a very cute girl with that name at my daughter old preK she wore it well.

I’m Australian I have my location displayed :frowning:
We have a very small hispanic population I only know about the cuban crisis because I’ve just started doing history as a subject I think for many Aussies the connection would be to [name_u]Havana[/name_u] [name_m]Brown[/name_m] a well known singer and DJ

I agree with @spring13. I guess it’s one of those [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] things. It might not work here but if it works in Australia, then so be it.

I hear [name_u]Havana[/name_u] I think [name_u]Cuba[/name_u]. Far too place namey for me even though I’ll admit it does sound very much like a name.

With [name_u]Havana[/name_u], I immediately think of [name_u]Cuba[/name_u], then cigars and communism. I can’t really see it as a person’s name.

I think it works outside of the US but in the US it’s too place-namey.

It’s too place namey for me, though I quite like [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] for a girl.

I am from Western Australia and hear her name all the time on the adds so I am quite used to it as a name, not a place. [name_f]IMO[/name_f] I think it is beautiful and unique, I have never met anyone with that name and love the way it flows…similar to [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] but without the S which I don’t particularly like anyway. I have always liked place names so perhaps that’s why I find it okay (I quite like the names [name_f]Asia[/name_f], [name_f]China[/name_f], [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] and [name_f]Sicily[/name_f]) But even then I don’t hear of it often these days and if I hadn’t watched Dirty Dancing [name_u]Havana[/name_u] Nights I honestly wouldn’t have known it was a place. I don’t think it’s an issue and it is a beautiful name

Thank you
@[name_u]Aza[/name_u] I’m also Western Australian

@emiliana oh really? [name_m]How[/name_m] cool!
