Have you ever loved a name and then realized you were pronouncing it wrong?

Oh and I used to say [name_u]Sean[/name_u] like see-ann It makes me cringe to even think about it now

Louis! I have known people with this name that pronounce it as [name_m]Lew[/name_m]-ee/Lew-iss/Low-iss etc. If I just see it written down I never know how they actually want it to be pronounced

Same here! [name_f]My[/name_f] fifth grade language arts teacher said “[name_u]Sidney[/name_u], why don’t you read this passage.” And so I started. When I got to the name ‘[name_u]Sean[/name_u]’, I pronounced it like seen. She said “[name_u]Sidney[/name_u], it’s pronounced ‘shohn’.” I was so confused!

Well this thread taught me the correct pronunciation of [name_f]Amabel[/name_f].

I like [name_m]Louis[/name_m], but only pronounced [name_u]Lou[/name_u]-ee (I prefer [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] for [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]). Probably fine in [name_f]England[/name_f] but wouldn’t be worth the pronunciation problems in the US.

I also prefer British pronunciations for [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_m]Jacoby[/name_m] (which is fine since I am here, I guess)

Isobel sounds much nicer in my head than its actual pronunciation.

Lyra. I thought it was leer-ah and really liked it. Then I found out it was lie-rah and was “meh” about the name.

I stubbornly pronounce [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] as Thah-lee-ah and [name_m]Quillan[/name_m] as it looks, even though it’s meant to be Kill-an. I used to love [name_f]Ione[/name_f] pronounced in a fake french accent (like Ihy-ohn), and was disappointed, but now I love the actual pronunciation!

This thread just taught me how to correctly say [name_f]Amabel[/name_f], but I think I’ll stick to my pronunciation :joy:

I remember when I first discovered [name_u]Orion[/name_u] and thought it was said like ‘o-ree-un’ (kind of like [name_m]Oreo[/name_m] with an ‘n’ at the end) and it took me a while to get used to saying it right. It lost its shine for me after that, even though now I prefer the correct pronunciation.

Wait… Quillian is [name_u]Killian[/name_u]!?! Shoot, add that to my list then :joy:

I thought [name_f]Eluned[/name_f] was pronounced e-LOON-id. The real pronunciation, EL-ih-nid, isn’t bad, but I still really like my imaginary one :joy:

Oh! I also thought [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] was [name_f]Callie[/name_f]-oh-pee and I loved it. When I learned the real pronunciation, I still loved it, though. Still one of my faves.

Also add me to the list of people who have been pronouncing [name_f]Amabel[/name_f] wrong…

I think this is how it’s pronounced in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]. I say pick your favourite way to say it and go for it  For yourself - I don’t mean we should mispronounce other people’s names

I pronounced [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] wrong for years, I used to pronouce it Purse- uh- phone

I used to LOOOOVE [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] and wanted to have daughters named [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]. I was pronouncing [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] like Tuh-LOO-luh. And then I saw the [name_u]Tal[/name_u]-you-luh pronunciation and I haven really liked it that much since then.

Aloysius. I thought it was uh-LOY-shee-us. [name_u]Aloe[/name_u]-ish-us seems wrong still. It sounds like Malicious/vicious and aloe.

Another thing. I have never loved [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but I do like it more now that I know the correct pronunciaion. I used to think it was peen-lope or pen-lope :joy:
