We have settled on [name]Isabella[/name] for our second daughter since we both [name]LOVE[/name] it. But, my husband, who is very interested in stars and universe has changed his mind. He said he still loves [name]Isabella[/name], but he just loves [name]Andromeda[/name] more. Have you ever seen a girl named [name]Andromeda[/name]? I have never seen [name]Andromeda[/name] in real life, I’ve only seen [name]Andromeda[/name] once in a book. So, I don’t know how other people would think about [name]Andromeda[/name]. I thought of some ‘common’ alternatives like [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Stella[/name], but they are not my favorites. Nickname will probably be [name]Anna[/name]. What do you think?
Oh my goodness, I love it! I’ve always adored this name, although I’ve yet to meet someone named it. If I did, though, I would be so excited, because I really do love it, and the nickname [name]Anna[/name]. A perfect choice for a lover of stars and the universe.
I think it’s just a little too out there. [name]Isabella[/name] is very popular, but I’d rather have a very popular name than an extraordinarily uncommon one, to be honest. It’s very, very tied to the galaxy to me, and also to the [name]Andromeda[/name] Strain by [name]Michael[/name] [name]Crichton[/name]. Neither connection is necessarily negative, but the’re both very strong, which I do think is a negative. [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Stella[/name] are good alternatives, and you might also like these:
[name]Celeste[/name]- heavenly
[name]Selena[/name]- moon goddess
[name]Nova[/name]- as in a supernova
[name]Araceli[/name]- altar of the sky
[name]Carina[/name]- a constellation
[name]Isis[/name]- goddess of the sky
[name]Lyra[/name]- a constellation
[name]Leilani[/name], [name]Noelani[/name], or any other Hawaiian -lani name contain the element meaning “sky”
Based on sound alone, you might like:

[name]Alessia[/name]
Many years ago I had a teacher named [name]Andromeda[/name] Tribble. At the time (I was in the third grade) I just thought it was a weird name but I now realize how unique and pretty it is. That’s the only [name]Andromeda[/name] I ever knew.
No, I’ve never known one. [name]IMO[/name], it’s a bit much of a name.
The dog in the original version of Disney’s The Parent Trap was named [name]Andromeda[/name], so everytime I see the name, I think [name]Haley[/name] [name]Mills[/name].
I once had a Greek character named Andromada (or was it [name]Hero[/name] [name]Andromeda[/name]?) who went by [name]Andy[/name]. But in real life? Never heard of it. It’s pretty and unusual, and I love it. Would I use it in real life though? No. But if you really love it, use it.
- [name]Athena[/name]
Wow, this is kinda freaky.
I’m tied to your original choice, mainly because [name]Isabelle[/name] is my first choice.
I think both are stunning.
My little sister, though, has [name]Andromeda[/name] picked out as her favorite girls’ name. She read it in a book once (I don’t know what book it was–it could’ve been the one mentioned already–I never read it), and she fell in love. She would use the nn [name]Anna[/name], too. At first I hated it, but the galaxy [name]Andromeda[/name] is making it more appealing to me (especially since I’m taking astronomy this semester in school), and just knowing my sister has made it grow on me. I wouldn’t have the guts to use it, but I don’t doubt that my sister will, lol.
Good luck!
I’ve seen a few [name]Andromeda[/name]'s in birth announcements so it is being used. I like it. It it a lot of name, but with very usable nicknames.
Good luck.
I like [name]Andromeda[/name]. It’s bold, but beautiful. And the mythological character by that name is inoffensive.
[name]Isabella[/name] is pretty, but ever so common now. With [name]Andromeda[/name] she’ll likely be the only one in her class with the name, whereas with [name]Isabella[/name], she’ll probably be [name]Isabella[/name] Last Initial. throughout her schooling.
I’d prefer the distinctive name to the common name. And [name]Anna[/name] would work fine as a nickname, allowing her to blend in a bit more if she chooses.
I love [name]Andromeda[/name]! It was on my short list, but my hubby vetoed it. I wanted to use the nickname [name]Andi[/name]. I think it would be a better choice than [name]Isabella[/name], since [name]Isabella[/name] is so common. As the PP said, she will probably be [name]Isabella[/name] Last Initial. And even with a very unique name like [name]Andromeda[/name], she could use [name]Anna[/name] or [name]Annie[/name] or [name]Andi[/name] as a nickname to make it more traditional without being too common.
I think [name]Andromeda[/name] is a spectacular name, and not too much at all. As names4real mentioned, the nicknames are very wearable if you think the whole name is too much. I read a book once where the main character’s name (or nickname?) was Anda. That would be a more interesting alternative to Anna as a nickname.
My name is [name]Andromeda[/name] and while there were a few mean nicknames growing up, I lived near NASA and a big state university so most people got the mythological/astronomy link and loved it (I was named after the galaxy). I like it very much as an adult. I have 3 middle names so am called Aces by my family (the initials of each name) however no nicknames with friends, nothing seemed to fit. I live in [name]France[/name] now and am called [name]Andy[/name] by most people here, though I never liked it in English (it’s a boys name!) with the French accent it’s cute.
If you like [name]Andromeda[/name], you should go for it, I grew into it and own it and love it. Maybe having such a unique and unexpected name is what made me want to do something unique and unexpected with my life and move to [name]France[/name]
Yes, I had a friend in college named [name]Andromeda[/name]. Her nn was [name]Drama[/name] (from Entourage, not because she was full of drama).
Other nn: [name]Meda[/name], [name]Andra[/name], [name]Romy[/name], [name]Roma[/name], [name]Rama[/name], [name]Rami[/name], [name]Mea[/name]/[name]Mia[/name], [name]Eda[/name]/Eeda, [name]Drea[/name]
I know a young woman named [name]Andromeda[/name] and I think it’s wonderful. She certainly stood out because of her name but it’s also familiar and has deep roots. I think it’s a great choice and definitely at the other end of the spectrum from [name]Isabella[/name]!
I have met a child with full name [name]Andromeda[/name], she went by [name]Ande[/name] at school
I have never met an [name]Andromeda[/name] in real life. It was the main character’s name in the book My [name]Sister[/name]'s Keeper. The character went by [name]Anna[/name] also and you didn’t find out her whole name was [name]Andromeda[/name] until about half-way through the book. I love it! And it was a very good book by the way! Out of your two choices, I prefer [name]Andromeda[/name]. I would rather have a unique name with the ability to use a more common nickname than having to always go by my first name and last intial my entire life. I also love mythological names, I think that almost all of them have great stories behind them.
I honestly think that [name]Isabella[/name] is too popular nowadays. It’ll be cool to use it several years ago or in the future, but I’m not suggesting it for this time.
In the other hand, [name]Andromeda[/name] nn [name]Anna[/name] is pretty, and I never met one in real life.
I also love astronomy, so if you’re not sure with [name]Andromeda[/name], consider:
[name]Lyra[/name]
Caellum
[name]Bellatrix[/name] (from orion constellation)
[name]Aquila[/name]
[name]Capella[/name] (from Auriga)
[name]Gemma[/name]
Giena (from Cygnus)
[name]Vega[/name] (from [name]Lyra[/name])
It’s too much, like you might as well name her Galactica.
[name]How[/name] about [name]Terra[/name]?
[name]Luna[/name]?
[name]Nova[/name]?
[name]Cassiopeia[/name]
Seriously though, I get the appeal. I just don’t think it will work.
I’ve only seen [name]Andromeda[/name] in fiction, not in RL. That said, it’s not completely unfamiliar, the pronunciation is straightforward, and it has the possibility of many cute nicknames, so I think it’s a little outlandish but totally usable.
[name]Isabella[/name] is beautiful too, also has many cute nicknames, and I truly don’t think its popularity is the big deal it’s often made out to be–the most popular names of today are still not all that common, particularly compared to the most popular names of the past. It’s in no way guaranteed that your [name]Isabella[/name] would have to be identified by her last initial. In my son’s kindergarten, there isn’t a single shared name, and that’s been our typical experience through preschool and 3 different daycares as well. All I’m saying is, if [name]Isabella[/name] is the name you and your husband both [name]LOVE[/name] with the intensity of capital letters
be cautious about casting it aside in favor of any dark horse name that comes up on you really fast. I’ve learned they can fade on you really fast too.
