I just met someone the other day who has the name Searcy (pronounced Sear-cie). I didn’t have the chance to ask her where it came from but I was wondering if y’all had ever head of the name? Where does it come from? Is it short for something?
I know a couple of people who pronounce [name]Saoirse[/name] like that, but I haven’t seen that spelling before.
Is it like [name]Circe[/name] but spelled differently? [name]Circe[/name] is the name of a goddess.
I know that ‘[name]Circe[/name]’ is a minor goddess in Greek mythology, it is pronounced like ‘Sir-See’. Sounds very similar to Searcy, and if you hadn’t typed out the pronunciation I would have pronounced Searcy like ‘sir-see’ as well.
I have heard of both [name]Saoirse[/name] and [name]Circe[/name]. Spelled as you have it, it looks a lot like a surname. Interesting!
All I think of is the town of Searcy, Arkansas. Which I believe was named after someone with that last name, so I’d say it’s a surname of some sort
It reminds me of Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones. I think her name is pronounced ser-see but I always pronounced it sear-see in my head while reading.
@lajohnson: my thoughts exactly. I actually lived in Searcy for awhile. I cringe every time I see [name]Circe[/name] as a name bc it’s prnd the same. It’s such a hick town, I just can’t go there!!
Thanks, everyone! I wonder if it was support to be like “sir-see.” She had a STRONG southern accent and I’m wondering if even with the spelling if it was supposed to be more like [name]Circe[/name]… Interesting!
I was going to ask if you meant Cersei or [name]Circe[/name] but got beaten to it!
I’m going to assume they meant [name]Circe[/name] - I think it’s a neat name.
I’ve only heard Searcy as a surname. I know one person who pronounced it “seer-see,” and another who pronounced it “sur-see.”
Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones is a B*tch but i [name]LOVE[/name] the name! (pronounced: Sir-see)
