I really like the name Mordred (despite the negative connotations) but I’m not sure how well it would be recived by the general public. Opinions?
Mordred sounds like the name of a villain and the only nickname I can think of is [name_m]Mort[/name_m] or [name_m]Morty[/name_m]. It’s a no, no for me. However, I understand it’s a name straight out of Arthurian legends and reminds me of a younger version of myself devouring “The Mists of [name_f]Avalon[/name_f]”. Have you considered [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] instead?
Really not a fan. Sounds effeminate.
I am a fan of the nn options though.
I myself prefer [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] or [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m].
[name_m]How[/name_m] on earth does Mordred sound effeminate?! I’m starting to think “effeminate” and “girly” are words people use to discredit male names they aren’t fond of, which is really rather sexist. I don’t think Mordred is any less usable than [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] or [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]. It doesn’t have any sounds that are currently in style though, and I think that does make it feel dated.
There’s nothing effeminate about Mordred.
However, it does sound evil. Sorry, I think it would be like naming a kid Voldemort or Sauron, it’s just too villainous.
Mordred isn’t my style, but I can see the appeal. It is somewhat similar to [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] and [name_m]Tristram[/name_m] that are in style so it actually may catch on. And it isn’t effeminate at all.
Actually, I had to Google to remind myself who Mordred is, so the villain connections are not that strong.
Are you aware of the meaning of ‘effeminate’? I’d understand the comment if say, the name was [name_u]Allie[/name_u], or [name_m]Teddie[/name_m], or maybe Alicetair or something like that, but Mordred? Mordred is far from effeminate - and if you’re saying that because it sounds like [name_f]Mildred[/name_f], most people don’t find [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] overly girly either!
OP - I’m not personally a fan, but I think with the various other mythological names going, it could potentially work. I do prefer it in the middle to a name such as [name_m]Tristram[/name_m]/[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] or [name_m]Caradoc[/name_m] though.
It makes me think of “morbid”, sorry
It reminds me of clunky girl names like Mildred.
It’s an opinion, she asked for opinions. My opinion differs from yours, get over it.
Hmm [name_u]Morgan[/name_u]. I like it.
I guess the villainous aspect is part of why I like it. But I agree that Voldemort or Sauron would be poor choices
I agree that it sounds both evil and effeminate. I do like parts of the name and agree that [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] may be a good substitute. But that one is also a common name among girls.
I think the idea of more ominous or villainous names is cool! I wonder if there’s a list out there already.
I have a serious soft spot for names that end in -dred (Mordred, Theodred, [name_f]Mildred[/name_f]) but I don’t think I can endorse Mordred for use in real life. [name_m]Just[/name_m] based on the sound of the name “more dread” it has a negative feel to it, even without knowing the Arthurian connection, which some people would. I’d say maybe a middle name, but even then I would hesitate. I think it’s best left on the GP list…
I love Mordred, but it’s on the GP list. Mostly because I have [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] very high on my girls list, so it’s way too matchy sound-wise, and probably too much of a theme. I don’t really get the ‘villainous’ feeling from sound alone (it comes out more like Mor-drid when I say it, so not so close to dread), but more from the character in Arthurian legend. It’s not bad though, and it could actually work.
It’s OK. I like the nn Dred (reminds me of Dred [name_m]Scott[/name_m]). I also like the name Drederick, nn Dred
To me Mordred sounds like Death-[name_u]Red[/name_u] (“mort”-red)
Mordred was a product of incest, and I definitely immediately made the connection to the legend. Mordred - Wikipedia
Other names that sound slightly ‘villainous’ to me, but in a more exciting/positive way, as opposed to actually evil:
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_u]Reggie[/name_u]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Damon[/name_m]
[name_m]Damien[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspar[/name_m]
[name_m]Gaspard[/name_m]
[name_u]Sloan[/name_u]
[name_m]Igor[/name_m]
[name_m]Iago[/name_m]
[name_m]Dimitri[/name_m]
[name_m]Maxim[/name_m]
(People might disagree with me on this list, but they’re just names that I personally associate with a kind of silky ambiguity-- sometimes admittedly for literary reasons-- e.g. [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] –> [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] de [name_u]Winter[/name_u] from [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f].)
It reminds me of death, sorry.
I’ve never heard the name before and when I read it I thought that it sounded like a girl’s name, not a boy’s name. Maybe becuase it is so close to [name_f]Mildred[/name_f] and it’s my closest basis of comparison.
I think the name is totally usable but I don’t personally like it. I read and associate it to “Morbid” which isn’t a good association.
I automatically thought it was a feminine name as well, having never heard the name before. Not sure why - can’t put my finger on it. But everyone reads names differently.
