Hazel with a y?

I love the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], but prefer it spelled [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f]. I think it’s really cute, but is it too much hassle, as she would spend her whole life correcting people? My name is spelt [name_f]Alixandra[/name_f], instead of [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], and I love how my name is slightly different, but I always have to correct people. I have to anyway because of my last name so I don’t know how it will affect [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f].
I’m rambling sorry lol. Anyway, [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] with a y or too much hassle?

I’d say too much hassle. [name_u]Forever[/name_u] people will be spelling it with an e, especially since it’s not one of those names that have a million spellings ([name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], etc). Also I think [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] looks cleaner than [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f].

You’re in a great position to make an educated decision about this. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you always have to spell out your first name and is it a hassle? Your experience and thoughts won’t necessarily be the same as your daughter’s but it’s a good place to start.

The beauty of a name like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is that it’s not subjected to misspellings since there’s only one way to spell the word hazel. [name_m]Even[/name_m] popular names like [name_u]Abby[/name_u]/[name_u]Abbie[/name_u], [name_f]Ava[/name_f]/[name_f]Eva[/name_f], or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]/[name_f]Alivia[/name_f] will require people to spell them but with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], I’d bet 99.9999% of people would spell it that way, and you’d be taking that away using [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f]. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not a big deal at all, just a thought I had.

Lastly, when I saw “[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] with a Y”, I thought [name_f]Hayzel[/name_f] at first. [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f] registers as hay-zeel in my head. Could just be me though.

I much prefer how [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] looks but I don’t think you’d be setting your daughter up for a life of failure or anything dramatic like that by using [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f].

I’m not really a fan. First of all, it seems weird for me to change the spelling of a name that is a word? It’s not like spelling [name_f]Ann[/name_f] as [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is the word in the dictionary. Plus it looks weird, and I want to say hay-zil instead of hay-zel. Personally I really wouldn’t like having a name that’d get misspelled all the time.

I share the same thoughts. It’s strange to change a word name. [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f] just looks super odd to me as well. I feel like it takes away from the name. I do love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], though.

I prefer [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. To me [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f] looks a bit odd, especially since [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is a word name, and I’d wonder if it’s supposed to be pronounced the same as [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or differently.

Why not Hazy?

I adore [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. Honestly, [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f] looks silly. It looks like a spelling a child or teen would choose. Names are not ours, we are giving them to another person that will be carrying them for 70/80+ years…hopefully.

I much prefer the original spelling.

I agree with previous posters. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is such a pretty name, and has such a clean spelling and pronounciation. [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f] looks like something made up, or like you’re trying too hard to be different.

You will likely often be telling people, “her name is [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f], like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] but with a Y” - and isn’t that just too long winded?

I think it’d be far too much hassle. My name is [name_u]Haley[/name_u], and it was the most popular spelling when I was born, and yet I still have to spell my name constantly. I feel like [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f] would have the same problem, and “[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] with a Y” would more often than not read as [name_f]Hayzel[/name_f] in a lot of minds.

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is so gorgeous, I wouldn’t change it! Especially not to [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f]. It looks too trendy and made up, and kinda reminds me of a medicine, like the allergy pill Xyzal. The ZY combo just feels like too much.

I thought you were going to spell it as [name_f]Hayzel[/name_f] and thought that would be interesting. But [name_f]Hazyl[/name_f]? That looks really strange.

I think it’s pretty much unanimous that [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] it is. lol. Thanks for your input, I agree with all your points and you are all right. Looking back, it will be too much hassle.

Oh my…[name_f]Hazyl[/name_f] is so made-up. Reflects on the intelligence of the parents, I’m afraid.
