He likes Lily, but I'm not sure. Thoughts?

I think it’s a pretty name and I’m not too bothered by the popularity but it feels a bit “soft” to me. Am I over thinking? Any suggestions on a substitute that we could better agree on?

Siblings are [name]Reed[/name] and [name]Claire[/name].

To give you more of an idea of what we like…

I like “[name]Kate[/name]” but he prefers [name]Katherine[/name], no NN.

I need ideas! Thank you!!

it’s really obviously a personal choice - many people love [name]Lily[/name] as it is pretty popular. For me, though i was in a very similar situation that my husband liked it and i didn’t feel it was substantial enough for what i wanted. could you use katherine with the nickname [name]Kate[/name]? would something like [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Emily[/name], [name]Nora[/name], [name]Nina[/name], [name]Ella[/name] work? These seem to be in the vein of [name]Claire[/name] to me

I like it, and it works well with [name]Reed[/name] and [name]Claire[/name].

I guess when I think of more substantial I think of longer names like [name]Lilliana[/name], but that would look really out of place with [name]Reed[/name] and [name]Claire[/name]. Maybe [name]Lillie[/name]? Or [name]Lilya[/name]? [name]Just[/name] thinking out loud here

If we used [name]Katherine[/name], he is not excited about calling her [name]Kate[/name]… but, ultimately it would be her choice/option I guess!

I also like [name]Ella[/name], which he says is “OK” but he likes [name]Lily[/name] better.

I also like [name]Alice[/name], which he rejects completely!

[name]Sophie[/name] & [name]Sadie[/name] are “taken” in our family but I’ll put some thought into [name]Emily[/name],[name]Nora[/name] and [name]Nina[/name]… thanks for the ideas!

I do think “[name]Lillie[/name]” seems a bit more substantial than the “lily” spelling! thanks for that idea.

I am perfectly happy to be talked into this name, BTW. Would make life much easier!

[name]Lily[/name] would be a beautiful nn for [name]Lillian[/name] if that feels more substantial to you. And, there are other names that people use it as nn for (though some get to be a stretch imo). It’s funny that he likes the longer version of [name]Katherine[/name] to [name]Kate[/name], but likes the short [name]Lily[/name]. But, my husband is like that with a lot of names. I’d [name]Bet[/name] that he would like one thing, but likes a completely different version of it than I would expect. I see nothing wrong with giving the longer version to whatever type of name you both like. And the one parent that likes an alternative could have a special little private nn to share. We’re going with [name]Cordelia[/name] for an soon expected twin girl. While we both love the name. My husband also loves C.J. and will probably have that as a special thing with her. The boy will be [name]Cormac[/name]. We both love that one too, but I can see my husband always using the full version and me calling him [name]Mac[/name].

Also, if we paired it with MN [name]Katherine[/name] (which is a family name) I suppose she could go by that, or even [name]Kate[/name], if [name]Lillie[/name] doesn’t suit her at all, right?

[name]Lillie[/name] [name]Katherine[/name] Yeager

how is that?

Would it suit a blonde/blue eyed girl to you?

Oh I love your choices!! [name]Cormac[/name] is one of my absolute favorites. And yeah, Icannot explain his naming taste at all. If I understood it better we would likely be on the same page right now. I never know how he will react to a name - its totally unpredictable.

Sorry, I think [name]Lillie[/name] looks even cuter and fluffier than [name]Lily[/name]. [name]Lily[/name] at least has a sort of slim nature properly-spelled crispness, [name]Lillie[/name] is just adorable. Not bad exactly but sugar-soft, I think its the -ie I’m reading as very nickname-ish. Could just be me though.

[name]Lilah[/name], [name]Lilith[/name], [name]Lillian[/name]…? [name]Lillian[/name] doesn’t exactly flow with [name]Katherine[/name], unfortunately. [name]Lila[/name] vs. [name]Lilah[/name] I’m not sure which reads stronger.

I could see [name]Lilith[/name] working with a sister [name]Claire[/name]. I promise I’m not just saying that because I love each individually.

[name]Katherine[/name] will inevitably be shortened to [name]Kate[/name]. Wether your husband uses it or not, chances are she’ll prefer a shortened version in many scenarios. My name is [name]Alexandra[/name] and I often go by [name]Alex[/name], even in professional situations. I like that my nn is still short and professional. The same can’t be said for all nicknames. A nice compromise might be [name]Calla[/name] - has the short word C/K sound from [name]Kate[/name] that you like and the pretty flowery reference for your husband. (not to mention the automatic reference to [name]Calla[/name] Lilys!) As a bonus it’s not too popular either! I hated being one of 12 [name]Alex[/name]'s in my elementary school (yes 12 counting both genders!)

I see your point re “ie” reading nicknameish. My youngest sister went by [name]Allie[/name] forever but now that she is a professional, she prefers [name]Allison[/name]. It’s nice to have that kind of option I think.

[name]Lillith[/name] does make it more grown up but I don’t know if I can get the image of the character on Cheers out of my mind!

I’d not considered [name]Calla[/name] before, thanks for the suggestion. I don’t know what exactly it is about [name]Lily[/name] that he likes … [name]Calla[/name] may or may not be in the same vein for him, though I do see where you are going with it! I just don’t know if it would resonate the same with him… I do see him liking the NN [name]Callie[/name] for sure!!

I love the name [name]Lily[/name], although also more based on my husband’s love for it : D. As you can see, [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Clara[/name] is a very real possible sibset for me in the future, so, I think it matches well with [name]Claire[/name] (I like [name]Claire[/name] too btw, in some ways more than [name]Clara[/name], but, we have a very short last name so I like just the little extra length)
: D.

I’d spell it [name]Lily[/name]. [name]Lilly[/name] or [name]Lillie[/name] is longer, and fine, but I just think she’ll always be spelling it. With [name]Lily[/name], people will mostly get it right the first time. I have a personal tie and affection for the spelling [name]Lilli[/name], but I don’t think I’d ever use it because of the spelling stuff.

If she is [name]Lily[/name] (etc.) [name]Katherine[/name], [name]Lily[/name] [name]Kay[/name] or [name]Lily[/name] [name]Kate[/name] could be a cute nickname that would give it some extra weight.

In terms of [name]Lilith[/name] - besides the Cheers character - there’s the creation myth, and the feminist rock concert. The mythical [name]Lilith[/name] is a mixed bag - it’s all in how you interpret it - and the rock concert thing is cool in a way - to me though, it’s just too much association, whereas [name]Lily[/name] is a little less weighed down.

There’s also [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Lily[/name], and I do really like [name]Lillian[/name], but it seemed like you didn’t?

Good luck whatever you decide!

i agree on the lily spelling. in ways i like some of the other spellings better somehow lillie or lilli but i think that lily is more adult and less nicknamey. if it is lily katherine there is always the option to call her katherine or kate, but i think that might get complicated and chances are whatever you start out with won’t be so easy to change later on. lily kate is a nice option though if you want to do something like that. i think i just prefer having the name set as opposed to keeping options open. of course she could change her mind when she’s 15 and prefer katherine or kate but i like to be firm from the start of what i would be calling her

I love [name]Lily[/name]! It is very sweet, but it’s also really strong to me, and I think [name]Reed[/name], [name]Claire[/name], and [name]Lily[/name] would be great together. I think [name]Lillian[/name] is great if you want something more sturdy/strong.

Good luck!

I’m not crazy about [name]Lily[/name] for the same reason, too soft. I think [name]Lila[/name] “lye-la” and Lira “leer-ah” sound more serious

Is hubby OK with [name]Kay[/name], [name]Kat[/name] or [name]Kit[/name]? Or for more of a stretch- [name]Theron[/name], [name]Reena[/name], [name]Erin[/name], or [name]Atty[/name]? He can’t really expect [name]Katherine[/name] to never have a nn, it’s too long. He should be proactive and choose a nn that he wouldn’t mind

i know it was popular long ago but i still think [name]Caitlyn[/name] is pretty - could that be a compromise between katherine and [name]Kate[/name]? also thought of maeve, grace, iris, molly, lucy, ruby
