I would love some help on Hebrew/Yiddish names for a girl. We don’t know what we are having. My husband is no help with names LOL. So any help would be great.
I like [name_f]Chaviva[/name_f] but I have a friend named [name_f]Chaviva[/name_f]. So I don’t think I can use it. I am pretty sure I still cant use it because it might be seen as naming after her. A Jewish [name_m]Law[/name_m] NO NO.
I’m not an expert by any means, but here are a few names that I love that I believe are Hebrew:
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] (my name )
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Kezia[/name_f]

I have lots of favourites but I’ll try to narrow/categorize a bit.
The slashes are when I’ve seen more than one spelling in rotation and I don’t have a favourite. If I have a strong favourite, it’s the only one I’ll list.
Yiddish
[name_f]Bayla[/name_f]/[name_f]Baila[/name_f] - A sweet, pretty name. Some say it is a form of Bilhah and some say it means “white.” “Beautiful” gets mixed in there too becase in Europe many Baylas used [name_f]Bella[/name_f] when outside Jewish communites.
[name_f]Reina[/name_f]
Toiba
Mirele
[name_f]Golda[/name_f] - Very vintage but clunky-cute.
[name_f]Keila[/name_f]/[name_f]Kaila[/name_f]/[name_f]Kayla[/name_f] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] this one, but [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] tends to get picked on, on nameboards as modern/trendy. It’s not. It’s a Yiddish variant of Hebrew [name_f]Kelila[/name_f]. [name_f]Kayla[/name_f] is the simplest/most familiar and I love the nickname [name_u]Kay[/name_u], but [name_f]Keila[/name_f]/[name_f]Kaila[/name_f] avoid “kreative by association.”
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] - It means lucky! And it’s adorable.
Hebrew
[name_f]Shoshana[/name_f] - [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is a translation of the Hebrew [name_f]Shoshana[/name_f]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are nice.
[name_f]Noa[/name_f]
[name_f]Tamar[/name_f]
[name_f]Kelila[/name_f] - I’m just afraid she’d get called [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], and if spelt [name_f]Kelilah[/name_f], rhymed with [name_f]Delilah[/name_f].
[name_f]Yonina[/name_f]
[name_f]Dvora[/name_f] - this is the Hebrew form of [name_f]Deborah[/name_f]. I think it’s cuter.
[name_u]Yael[/name_u]
[name_f]Ilana[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] - okay [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] is often used as a Spanish name but in Hebrew, [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]/[name_f]Rimona[/name_f] means pomegranate. I like nature names, most of my list seems to be plants/animals. And I like the spelling [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] more than [name_f]Rimona[/name_f] in English speaking countries.
[name_f]Leah[/name_f]
[name_f]Liora[/name_f]
Ezriela
[name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]
[name_f]Ketzia[/name_f] - I just like this better than translation [name_f]Kezia[/name_f], it’s a little more phonetic (avoids the kez-EYE-ah pronunciation [name_f]Keziah[/name_f] gets) and [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] seems like a workable nickname option. It’s another nature name.
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
Keshet
[name_f]Tovah[/name_f]
Because I’m a bit corny/nerd I like combos where the meanings add up, like [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] Toiba (white dove) or [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] (lucky star). I don’t think it’s TOO corny to inflict on a child because it’s not like a combo that’s going to embarrass them in real life, nobody will really know. Except me. And maybe a nursery theme.
Are you going for something distinctly Hebrew/Yiddish, or do you want something that will sound more familiar to English speakers? If you like [name_f]Chaviva[/name_f], maybe
Avigayil
[name_f]Adina[/name_f]
Meira
[name_f]Tikva[/name_f]
[name_u]Yael[/name_u]
[name_f]Shoshana[/name_f]
[name_f]Gavriella[/name_f]
[name_f]Zahava[/name_f]
[name_f]Gila[/name_f]
Chedva
I’m not a huge fan of Yiddish names, but these ones work ok for me:
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] (the only Yiddish name I know of off-hand–I think it’s so quirky and fun!)
[name_f]Eliora[/name_f]
[name_f]Tzofia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]
[name_u]Tali[/name_u]
[name_f]Shoshana[/name_f]
[name_f]Aviva[/name_f]
[name_f]Adaya[/name_f]
[name_f]Chava[/name_f]
[name_f]Channah[/name_f]/[name_f]Chanah[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelia[/name_f] (love this! I believe it means “zealous”)
