Help! About a week until due date and still no name.

DH and I have not agreed on any names yet. Naming our first was easy but this time has become very difficult. I think we have different taste in names which isn’t helping. Any recommendations appreciated

Names I love:

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]

He has mentioned but not in love with:

[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] but he doesn’t like [name_u]Rory[/name_u] as a nn
[name_u]Lennox[/name_u]- We can’t use but he likes the style
[name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] - he does not like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]

Since your husband seems to like more androgynous names, maybe [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] or [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] nn [name_u]Lennie[/name_u]?

Some other nns for [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] could be [name_f]Lore[/name_f], [name_f]Lora[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], and so on.

[name_f]Laurel[/name_f] (as maybe a middle ground between [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Leonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Marlena[/name_f] nn [name_u]Marley[/name_u]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_u]Madigan[/name_u]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] nn [name_m]Eli[/name_m]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the suggestion that @amberdaydream made of [name_f]Laurel[/name_f]! I also think doing a name with a boyish nickname would be a nice compromise.

[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]/[name_f]Francine[/name_f]/[name_f]Frances[/name_f] “[name_u]Frankie[/name_u]”
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “[name_f]Martie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] “[name_u]Lex[/name_u]”
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] “[name_u]Georgie[/name_u]”
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] “Bex”
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “[name_u]Jo[/name_u]”
[name_f]Maxine[/name_f] “[name_u]Max[/name_u]”

So I gather you like more feminine, vintage names and he prefers more modern ones. What about a classic/vintage name with history behind it that feels newer and more fresh. Or, a name that offers many nickname options so he can use a “pet name” that appeals to him and you can use one that works for you.

Tricky to find a compromise when your styles are so different! You seem to really love classic, refined names, while he likes more modern, informal names.

Some ideas:

  • [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] or [name_u]Alix[/name_u] - both are very old, traditional names (medieval variants of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] respectively), but with a spunky, modern-feeling twist because of that final -x.

  • [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] or [name_f]Clover[/name_f] - you like frilly, floral [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and he likes the trendy -er ending [name_u]Harper[/name_u]; these could maybe be a compromise option if you used a spunky nn like [name_f]Lana[/name_f] or [name_f]Indie[/name_f] (for [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]) or [name_f]Cloe[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f] (for [name_f]Clover[/name_f]).

  • [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f] - I wonder if a less frilly but still beautiful botanical name might appeal to him, maybe something with a spikier, livelier sound like one of these.

  • [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] or [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] - [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] plus [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] makes me think of these two. If he doesn’t like [name_u]Rory[/name_u] but does like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], could he cope with [name_f]Cori[/name_f]?

  • [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - this is the only other -lyn name I can think of that might appeal to your vintage tastes. I think it’s beautiful, and feels a lot more current than [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] despite being just as old-fashioned.

  • [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Hettie[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_u]Frankie[/name_u], [name_f]Nell[/name_f] - there are lots of nicknamey names along the same lines as [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] that feel a bit more elegant and old-fashioned. It might be worth trying out some other short forms on him and see if any appeal - he may even find a longer form acceptable, but if not I don’t see anything wrong with giving a sweet vintage nickname as a full name.

Thanks for the responses  DH didn’t agree to any of the names listed. But I think he may be coming around to the name [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]! I ask everyday. I think this may be our name… Fingers crossed! I like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] but he’s not sold. Help me sell him on this! We can’t use mn [name_f]Jane[/name_f] since it’s a popular clothing co. Thanks!!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the idea someone else had of using [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and nicknaming her [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] (I prefer the [name_u]Matty[/name_u] spelling though).
