Hello all,
I would really appreciate some advice. My husband and I are really considering TTC and I have gone into name overdrive. Mostly because we have always loved two names for our future children (been together 7 years) and now one of my close friends has chosen our favourite boys name ([name_u]Logan[/name_u]) for her baby. It’s great for her and I’m so happy for her but it has made me panic as we’ve always been so happy with our choice and now I don’t want to use it. I’m also panicked because husband won’t stop telling people we will now call our first boy [name_m]Dudley[/name_m], after his favourite Grandad.
Now I love grandad [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] but I really really really am not in love with this name for our child. What do you think to it?
We have been making new lists of boys names but can’t even slightly decide. Please let me know what you think to these names for a boy -
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]
[name_u]Neo[/name_u]
[name_m]Wolf[/name_m]
Phire (pronounced [name_m]Fire[/name_m] and an old family name)
Croft
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]
[name_u]Niko[/name_u]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
[name_u]Carter[/name_u]
[name_u]Rex[/name_u]
[name_u]Jem[/name_u]
[name_m]Pip[/name_m]
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u]
We have an unusual surname starting with G, and will call our first girl [name_u]River[/name_u] if things happen that way! The first three names of this list are my husbands favourites too.
I would really appreciate help as honestly this is driving me mad I feel like I can’t settle until I have a couple of favourites…
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] - I like this name, I don’t think it’s too out there…
[name_u]Neo[/name_u] - Cool name, but he might get a lot of Matrix jokes.
[name_m]Wolf[/name_m] - Like it!
Phire (pronounced [name_m]Fire[/name_m] and an old family name) - Interesting… There might be some pronunciation issues with this one… I might just call him [name_m]Fire[/name_m], [name_u]Flame[/name_u], or [name_u]Blaise[/name_u] if you like that theme.
Croft - Sounds like you’re saying ‘craft’ with a British accent, but it’s a good enough name.
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] - Good name
[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] - I like this name, but I think it should be a nickname because a grown man might not like something that sounds kind of childish. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], maybe?
[name_u]Niko[/name_u] - Not my taste, but it’s a good enough name.
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] - I like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]!
[name_u]Carter[/name_u] - Makes me think of a nerdy guy.
[name_u]Rex[/name_u] - Very cool name!
[name_u]Jem[/name_u] - Too feminine for a boy… Maybe try [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] like from To Kill a Mockingbird?
[name_m]Pip[/name_m] - Again, too feminine… Maybe try [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], [name_m]Philip[/name_m], [name_m]Peter[/name_m], or [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] as a full name for this one?
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] - Nice name
Would you not consider [name_u]River[/name_u] for a boy too? That way you can guarantee a child named [name_u]River[/name_u] no matter the sex of the baby.
[name_m]Pip[/name_m], [name_u]Rex[/name_u], [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] are too nicknamey for me. I also think that most (excluding [name_u]Rex[/name_u]) are too soft sounding if one day they might have a sister named [name_u]River[/name_u].
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] and [name_u]Carter[/name_u] are fine, I don’t love them but nice enough.
[name_m]Wolf[/name_m] would made a strong statement but I can’t help but think it makes a better MN, e.g [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Wolf[/name_m] or [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m] [name_m]Wolf[/name_m].
[name_m]Miles[/name_m] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] are gorgeous, my favourites after [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. I adore [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] it’s perfect!!
These I love:
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]
[name_u]Niko[/name_u]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
[name_u]Rex[/name_u]
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u]
These I like:
[name_m]Wolf[/name_m]
[name_u]Carter[/name_u]
[name_m]Pip[/name_m] - I like this but only as a nn
I think you have better than these:
[name_u]Neo[/name_u]
Phire (pronounced [name_m]Fire[/name_m] and an old family name)
Croft
[name_u]Jem[/name_u]
I think that if you are planning on the name [name_u]River[/name_u] for a girl a name like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], [name_u]Hunter[/name_u], [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Miles[/name_m] etc something that is an object/occupation name would work really well. I’d actually find it a little odd if you used [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. (I love Firefly but the sibling combo of [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_u]River[/name_u] was always a bit eyebrow raising to me).
Thank you all for these responses, especially this last one Lexiem!
I think you’re right it would be nice to keep the object/occupation theme and the names I am overwhelming drawn to are names like river, winter, wolf and miles.
I have considered [name_u]River[/name_u] for a boy but it is very special to me as a female name for several reasons, including the sci fi connotations.
This is so so helpful as reading your replies is helping with my perspective, like now i am seeing that actually some of the names I thought I liked aren’t right for us, even though they’re awesome.
I’m falling completely in love with the name [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], I think it is strong yet beautiful and I am adoring the classical and cosmic aspect to the name.
Thank you soooo much XX
Incidentally I am I’m love with the name [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m] but I know two people with that name now! I guess it’s becoming more popular. I’m a total sci fi geek.
Yes! I actually think that’s super cute, and I’m pretty sure my hubs will love it. I think it would need another middle name to flow onto our surname. His other grandpa was named george, so perhaps -
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] [name_m]Dudley[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m] G
Ahhh or maybe I’m getting into a tight spot with honouring names. Ha! Well at least I’m completely in love with the name atlas!
