I have just discovered that forums exist for help with naming new arrivals- I am so excited with my find!
I was born in [name_f]England[/name_f], but I am married to a [name_m]French[/name_m] man and together we have 4 children with a 5th on the way. Although we live in [name_f]France[/name_f], it feels like we spend so much of our time in the UK and also in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] & the US, so we’re a very international family! I am looking for a name for my 5th child, due in [name_u]June[/name_u]. We don’t know the gender yet- but we’ve settled on a boys name of ‘[name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m]’. For some reason I feel like if the new baby is a girl, her name must begin with a ‘C’. I love ‘C’ names and there are so many pretty ones to chose from! The new baby’s older siblings are called:
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Augustin[/name_m] - age 7
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] - age 5
[name_f]Fleur[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] - age 4
[name_m]Maximilien[/name_m] [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - 22 months
Célina [name_f]Aida[/name_f] - not traditionally [name_m]French[/name_m] but sounds so very beautiful- my worry is that it will remind people (including myself) of [name_f]Selena[/name_f] Gomez!)
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] [name_f]Aida[/name_f] - again, not traditionally [name_m]French[/name_m] but a name I have loved for such a long time! One of my favourite names of all time
Céline [name_f]Aida[/name_f] - this name is traditionally french and it looks so beautiful written down but it reminds me too much of [name_f]Celine[/name_f] [name_m]Dion[/name_m]!
Cécile [name_f]Aida[/name_f] - too old fashioned? It is traditionally [name_m]French[/name_m] though!
(Guilty pleasures: [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] & [name_f]Clemence[/name_f]- nicknames [name_u]Clem[/name_u] & also [name_f]Claudie[/name_f] and [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]- although I doubt these will make the cut!)
I am currently in the UK for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and I discovered this website while on the hunt for baby name help! I was wondering if anyone could help us decide a girls name for our baby? I look forward seeing to what everyone has to say!
Your kids’ names are gorgeous and congratulations on your fifth!
My favourites of your picks are [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecile[/name_f].
For you, I’d suggest [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]. It’s not traditionally [name_m]French[/name_m], but it’s close to [name_f]Cecile[/name_f] and perhaps a little brighter and less old-fashioned.
There’s also plenty of other lovely [name_m]French[/name_m] C names out there - I’d be happy to list some for you.
I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]! I’ve heard of it but it never crossed my mind to put on my list! [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering how would you suggest it to be pronounced? More: SISily or CESSily? Would love to hear your opinion on other names! My husband is so laid back with these things- he has a few names he actively dislikes but with all the other children he was very easy going. Makes it that much harder to settle on a name!
I pronounce [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] SESS-il-ee and [name_f]Cicely[/name_f] SISS-eh-lee.
With [name_f]Celina[/name_f], it looks lovely on paper but I’ve just never fallen in love with the whole [name_f]Selene[/name_f]/Silena/[name_f]Selena[/name_f]/[name_f]Celina[/name_f] family. Same goes for [name_f]Celine[/name_f], which does remind me an awful lot of [name_f]Celine[/name_f] [name_m]Dion[/name_m]. I like [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], though there’s a lot of the “s” sound, and it starts to sound like “sissy” after a while. [name_f]Cecile[/name_f] is also lovely, but I would be concerned particularly if she might be spending time in either [name_f]England[/name_f] or [name_u]America[/name_u] that it might get mistaken for the boys’ name, [name_m]Cecil[/name_m].
And, for good measure, a couple more [name_m]French[/name_m] C names:
[name_u]Candide[/name_u]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]
[name_f]Calais[/name_f]
[name_f]Cerise[/name_f]
[name_f]Capucine[/name_f]
[name_f]Celie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cachet[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Cecile[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] the best! I think [name_f]Cecile[/name_f] gets my vote for its unusualness, but I do really love [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. I also really love [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], and the nn [name_f]Cora[/name_f]'s adorable.
I love the suggestions of [name_f]Capucine[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], as well. A few other ideas:
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (popular, but och, I love it!)
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] (maybe too classic for you? I sort of love the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation, cah-TREEN, though)
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] (although I think I’ve heard this is super popular in [name_f]France[/name_f], so maybe it’s too popular?)
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f]
[name_f]Catalina[/name_f] (I quite like this with [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], and [name_m]Maximilien[/name_m], actually, and the nn [name_u]Tali[/name_u]/[name_u]Tally[/name_u] would be adorable! Not to mention [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_f]Lina[/name_f]…)
[name_f]Cerys[/name_f]/[name_f]Carys[/name_f]/[name_f]Charis[/name_f]/[name_f]Karis[/name_f] (I believe [name_f]Carys[/name_f]/[name_f]Cerys[/name_f] is Welsh, and [name_f]Charis[/name_f]/[name_f]Karis[/name_f] is Greek? I like the Greek origins more, but they’re both lovely)
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Camellia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Coretta[/name_f]
[name_f]Chiara[/name_f]
[name_f]Ciara[/name_f]
My pick of your list would by far be [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]! One of my all time favorite names. Except for the fact that it means “blind.” I’ve loved it ever since I read [name_m]Chaucer[/name_m] in high school.
Of other posters’ suggestions, I love love love [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]!!! and I think it goes best with your middle name:)
I really like [name_f]Celie[/name_f] for a nickname!!! I think it might work as a nickname for all my favourite names? I’ve discarded [name_f]Celine[/name_f] (for the ‘[name_m]Dion[/name_m]’ reason!).
I think the reason I’m finding it so hard is that names which sound so beautiful in [name_m]French[/name_m] ([name_f]Celine[/name_f] & [name_f]Cecile[/name_f]) sound so old fashioned in the UK!
Front runners for me at the moment are Célina & [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] (and I’m leaning towards [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] more and more!) - neither of which are particularly [name_m]French[/name_m] and at the end of the day that is where the children are primarily brought up!
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is edging onto my list! It used to be my favourite name- I used to know a very beautiful girl called [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] so it has always appealed to me!
[name_f]Catalina[/name_f] is SO pretty! I’m just never sure about place names… [name_f]Love[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Lina[/name_f]’ as a nickname though (used to have the name ‘[name_f]Lena[/name_f]’ on my list- which works very well in [name_f]France[/name_f]).
I love the name [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/[name_f]Cate[/name_f] also, whether a nickname for [name_f]Catalina[/name_f] or [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]! (I couldn’t decide between [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] back in the day!)
Its funny you should mention [name_f]Cerys[/name_f]/[name_f]Carys[/name_f]. I grew up pretty close to the Welsh border, my dad was Welsh and a lot of my family lived/still live there! It brought back memories! It is such a beautiful name, just not sure how it would fare in [name_f]France[/name_f].
Thank you for your help! I’m an indecisive mummy at the moment!
haha! I’m actually not too much of a [name_f]Carys[/name_f] fan, personally–it seems like everyone’s always excited about how it’s such a beautiful Welsh name, and they never seem to look toward anything else. I do have quite a bit of Welsh ancestry in me, so I’ve always found it overrated for some reason. It’s a nice name, but maybe that’s why I like the Greek [name_f]Charis[/name_f]/[name_f]Karis[/name_f] more. And ha! I didn’t even think of the place with [name_f]Catalina[/name_f], just that it’s a form of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. I never really gave it much attention before, but there is a [name_f]Catalina[/name_f] on here who goes by [name_u]Tali[/name_u], and I thought it was the coolest option! (And, well, my sister is [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] “[name_u]Tallie[/name_u]”, so I just like [name_u]Tally[/name_u], in all her various forms, haha.) I just think [name_f]Catalina[/name_f] is so unexpected and cool, and it has a ton of awesome nns. I’m also a big fan of [name_f]Lena[/name_f]! I’ve been considering [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lena[/name_f] lately.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about adding the following to your C-list:
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]
[name_f]Camelia[/name_f]
Easily prn. in both English and [name_m]French[/name_m], fit your other kids names and do not have the immediate [name_f]Celine[/name_f] [name_m]Dion[/name_m] association.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about adding the following to your C-list:

On none of them mean “blind”.
Of your options I like [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] the most! [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] is also nice (same name different spelling). [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Celia[/name_f]? This is super pretty! My one suggestion is to avoid names with accents, because if you’re not in a french speaking country, the computers don’t do accents, so if she’s typing, she wouldn’t be able to spell her name properly.
Some more ideas: [name_f]Camille[/name_f], [name_f]Christine[/name_f]/a, [name_f]Cosette[/name_f].
Names that end with a don’t go as well with [name_f]Aida[/name_f] because of the pronunciation. [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_f]Aida[/name_f] is much better than [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Aida[/name_f]. The 2nd is rhyme-y and the 2 names sort of blur together.
I think [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] sounds the best out of your listed names with [name_f]Aida[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Celine[/name_f] best out of your list (but I’m biased because I love [name_f]Selene[/name_f]), older people will think of [name_f]Celine[/name_f] [name_m]Dion[/name_m], but I doubt younger people will. I love [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], but I think it flows weird with [name_f]Aida[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Celina[/name_f] too (although I prefer [name_f]Selena[/name_f]), I doubt people will immidiately think of [name_f]Selena[/name_f] Gomez, but I don’t know how popular she is there. I love the suggestion of [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_f]Aida[/name_f] ([name_f]Cecily[/name_f] is probably my favorite out of the whole Cec- family). I love all of your children’s names, and any of the ones you had listed will sound great with them.
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] is my favorite from your list. I second the suggestion of [name_f]Celia[/name_f]. I don’t really care for [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], but that’s because it reminds me of celery (which is probably a non issue for a [name_m]French[/name_m] speaker). I’ll suggest [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]/[name_f]Celestia[/name_f] and also [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], a non C name but has a similar starting sound to names that you seem to be drawn to.
So far I prefer these from your list and the suggestions…
[name_f]Cecile[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Camellia[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
A few more similar ideas for you…
[name_f]Sibella[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabine[/name_f]
[name_f]Celestine[/name_f]
[name_f]Cerelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Clio[/name_f]/[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Corisande[/name_f]
[name_f]Cyrilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_f]Clemence[/name_f]
Thank you everyone for your help! Much appreciated. I feel like I’ve discussed names so many times with various family members of this festive period- it has been great to get a wide range of opinions. I am looking forward to my scan to finally find out the gender!
We are set on [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] for a boy and we are now stuck between [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Aida[/name_f] and Célina [name_f]Aida[/name_f] for a girl!
Thank you everyone for your suggestions- hope you all had a great [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and [name_m]New[/name_m] Year!
I guess I’m the odd one out in that I prefer Cécile from your list, though my second choice would be [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]. Cécile is so gorgeous and simple and [name_m]French[/name_m]. I would never get confused with [name_m]Cecil[/name_m], but then again I speak [name_m]French[/name_m]. As you said, you live in [name_f]France[/name_f], so it needs to work well there, and you could always choose a nickname that works in English, like [name_f]Cece[/name_f], which the family in the UK could use.
Although I prefer [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] is gorgeous as well. My favorite is the shorter version [name_f]Celia[/name_f], which despite its looks is not related.
I hate to be a [name_f]Debbie[/name_f] Downer, but I’m really not a fan of a first name ending in ‘a’ if the middle name does as well. [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Aida[/name_f] and [name_f]Celina[/name_f] [name_f]Aida[/name_f] both sound kind of rhyme-y and cartoon-like. I’m not quite sure how [name_f]Celine[/name_f] [name_m]Dion[/name_m] is even relevant enough anymore to influence the using or NOT using of a name. I think [name_f]Celine[/name_f] is a drop-dead, sophisticated, GORGEOUS name. If it were the mid - to - late 90’s and she’s singing about the Titanic, then I would understand your concern. If anything, I’d be more concerned with [name_f]Celina[/name_f]. Although it’s not spelled the same way, it sounds just like [name_f]Selena[/name_f] as in [name_f]Selena[/name_f] Gomez which is VERY relevant to today. It’s quite a popular Hispanic name in general also.
I really like [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] and [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] is nice too. [name_f]May[/name_f] I suggest [name_f]Colette[/name_f]? I’ve always adore this named and it’s so underused.
