Help! Final choice!

Okay. The time has come. We are actually going to attempt choosing our top three names. After adding (many names) and then cutting (unfortunately not as many names), we have come to our hopefully final list.

If you don’t mind, Molly and I would like to know four things…

1. Which of these names are your favourites, and why? Feel free to give them a rating out of ten.

2. What combos would you suggest with the names you chose? Middle(s) could be either from our list or your imagination.

3. What nicknames could be used for the names/combo(s)? (Nicknames are really important in our family!)

4. Which names do you NOT like and why? Again, feel free to rate them out of ten.

best of luck to you and your wife!

  1. my top five favorites are florence, daisy, elizabeth, alice, + louisa

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is probably my favorite of the five, as the abundance of nicknames are suiting to every profile! It doesn’t matter who [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] turns out to be— she’ll always have a nickname! Sporty [name_f]Lib[/name_f], endearing [name_f]Beth[/name_f], or zippy [name_f]Zibby[/name_f]! The list goes on and on! (10/10)

I love [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] for you as well, especially if your name is Margaret/Maggie! The connection there is super sweet, as with your wife’s name… they can all be related in a lovely connection. (10/10)

[name_u]Florence[/name_u] is super sweet and floral-sounding, also very grounded; [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is so dainty and charming! [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is very literary inspired, especially if you are a fan of Miss Alcott’s works!

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - [name_u]Allie[/name_u], or I think you could get away with nickname Lyss (usually used for Alyssa), or if you used [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] she could be AJ!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

What a lovely list you have!

I think [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] are gorgeous.
Maybe [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f].

The only name out of the ones I’ve chosen that doesn’t seem to lend itself to a nickname is [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] has [name_f]Kate[/name_f], for [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] I have to be basic and say I love [name_f]Gen[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] my favorite nn is [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could be [name_f]Janie[/name_f].

The ones I don’t like (no reason, just not my style) are [name_u]Florence[/name_u], [name_u]Blythe[/name_u], [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].

If I had to pick one name from your list, I would have to go with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “Ellie”

Good luck!

@greengirl11 Thank you! I am seriously in love with Sienna Maeve, Eliza Maeve and Genevieve Esther :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

[name_f]My[/name_f] top three from your list are:
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] it has that classic/fantasy vibe while still having some spunk - [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_u]Gene[/name_u], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], and [name_u]Nev[/name_u]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] also has that same sort of vibe and could potentially have many nicknames despite being short - [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], and [name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]. [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] can be short for [name_u]Piper[/name_u] if you want a nickname that comes from that it’s also something you don’t quite hear as often. - [name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], and [name_u]Pip[/name_u]

Middle names that can go with these names are
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Faye[/name_f]

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Honora[/name_f]

I hope this helps. I liked all of your names honestly and it was a beautiful list

I find combos quite difficult, so skipped that part, but otherwise hope this is helpful. You have a beautiful list, best of luck!!

my favorites:
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] - so spirited! reminds me of both [name_f]Pippi[/name_f] Longstocking and [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] Middleton so it manages to toe the line between cutesy and chic. feels unexpected and fresh.
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - love the mythological connection. strength and beauty.
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - educated but approachable. literary and timeless. very versatile in terms of combos and sibsets.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - good associations for me personally. spunky, historical, underused.
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - always love flower names :blossom: springy and friendly and bright. an especially nice middle name for a more classic first.
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - classic, versatile, so many great nicknames. very safe choice.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - understated and classy. works equally well for a big-city business woman or a friendly farm girl.

favorite nicknames:
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] - [name_u]Pip[/name_u]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - [name_f]Mae[/name_f], Maevey
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - [name_f]Bee[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - [name_f]El[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] Duck :hatching_chick:
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Katie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - [name_f]Janie[/name_f]

least favorites:
[name_u]Florence[/name_u] - something about this always feels musty to me. vastly prefer [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. also know it’s quite popular in the UK.
[name_f]Mairi[/name_f] - cute spelling but confusing pronunciation. prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Mara[/name_f].
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f] - feels trendy to me even though I know it’s not particularly. gives a different vibe from the rest of your list.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - just think this sounds too harsh. I do like [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] though.
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - love [name_f]Esti[/name_f], hate [name_f]Esther[/name_f]. similar to [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], just too harsh of a sound. also reads very religious to me and not sure if that is your intent.

I would use:

  1. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]: No need for nicknames, but [name_u]Day[/name_u] is super sweet and I would use it. Simple and easy to write everywhere. Flowers have a great symbolism and are sweet. Also reminds me of the Great [name_m]Gatsby[/name_m]. So again, vintage vibes and grand character vibes.
  2. [name_f]Alice[/name_f]: Reminds me of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland, and Victorian stories and riddles. No need for nicknames. Internationally recognised as a name.
  3. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]: I would personally use [name_u]Kitty[/name_u], or [name_f]Ketty[/name_f], but [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is perfectly timeless, elegant, fine and straightforward. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is modern compared to [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], but it is still timeless. Has a sharp sound. And look. Also reminds me of Hollywood and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] Hepburn and the past century, little black dresses, parties, and diamonds, and old films.
  4. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]: [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] can be natural nicknames. Reminds me of cottagecore or old mansions back in the Georgian era, otherwise Victorian era in [name_u]London[/name_u], of a girl who is spirited and of high pride yet strong and courageous.
  5. [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]: It means light, and it reminds me of sun and moon and everything dear to Greek mythology like temples, old tales, and oracles. It is the epithet of [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] by the way. A good alternative to [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] (as you said). [name_f]Bee[/name_f] or [name_f]Fay[/name_f] could be nicknames.
  6. [name_f]Jane[/name_f]: A classical name that is short and sweet.
  7. [name_f]Mary[/name_f]: [name_f]Polly[/name_f] could be a historical nickname. [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] or [name_f]May[/name_f] could also work very well. It is rare now and it is not that religious for me, the first thing I get reminded of is The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden, so Victorian [name_u]England[/name_u], an old gothic castle, a girl who grows and blossoms like a flower, ill people who walk out from their problems, flutes, animals, a secret garden. [name_u]Or[/name_u] of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Shelley[/name_u] and her gothic novels so again gothic vibes.

I would not use:

  1. [name_u]Florence[/name_u]: You are in the UK, right? It is too common, then
  2. [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]: I dislike how it looks, and it is too modern. Might sound a little kitsch because is a name of a city spelt wrong. The original city is [name_f]Siena[/name_f]. If you use [name_f]Siena[/name_f] then I will approve this choice.
  3. [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]: Okay, in the UK it is fine, but in my language and in many other languages in Europe it means a sexual thing, so I don’t know if you will use it, and also it sounds a bit too childish for me.
  4. [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]: Has a very ungrateful sound, [name_u]Phil[/name_u] is not a nickname I would use on a girl, the Lippa sound sounds like very huge and too enormous for me.
  5. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]: Too trendy, and the meaning is bad (someone who intoxicates) and sounds a classical “gothic name that is not that gothic, just a edgy kind of trendy” for me

Which of these names are your favourites, and why?

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_u]Florence[/name_u]. I love the vintage, elegant vibes and it comes with a range of nn’s (as well as the more obvious [name_f]Flo[/name_f], [name_f]Flor[/name_f] & [name_f]Flora[/name_f], I like [name_u]Ren[/name_u] & CeCe).

[name_u]Blythe[/name_u] is second favourite - again a vintage stunner & I love a one syllable name (I named my son Beck) but [name_u]Blythe[/name_u] packs such a lot into that one syllable!! I love the unusual sounds including the th ending. [name_u]Bly[/name_u] would be a great nn too.

Which names do you NOT like and why?

I don’t love [name_f]Esther[/name_f] - a bit clunky - but I don’t hate it. I don’t find [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] all that interesting - sorry!

Wishing you and your wife all the best :white_heart:

So you have a beautiful list however my personal favourites are

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ~ I love this name she’s so regal, timeless, elegant, strong, well rounded and has a range of adorable nicknames my favourite being [name_f]Libby[/name_f].

Middle names for Elizabeth…

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] ~ gosh so beautiful, unexpected, romantic and visually wonderful with all those repeated letters. I also adore the nickname [name_f]Evie[/name_f]!

Middle names for Genevieve…

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_u]Blythe[/name_u]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]

[name_u]Florence[/name_u] ~ she’s incredibly popular in the UK but it’s completely understandable she’s elegant, sweet packed with springtime imagery and has the lovely [name_u]Florence[/name_u] [name_u]Nightingale[/name_u] association. I love the nickname [name_f]Flossie[/name_f] I think this nickname is a cottagecore dream but I also feel you can have [name_f]Flora[/name_f] as a nickname which is very pretty.

Middle names for Florence…

[name_u]Florence[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u] [name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u] [name_f]Mairi[/name_f]

[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] ~ I wanted to narrow your list to down to four as I feel this is a manageable number to play around with. I also was conscious that you love nicknames so naturally gravitated to the nickname heavy [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. She is gorgeous, very classic, timeless, elegant and strong. I love the nicknames [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_u]Kitty[/name_u] even the nostalgic [name_f]Kathy[/name_f] is pretty.

Middle names for Katherine…

[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]

The names I dislike are

[name_f]Sienna[/name_f] ~ boomed in popularity in the UK about 4 to 6 years ago and now has that fast fashion name trend in association with this name. I feel like we have moved past the trend and I’m just not a fan. I actually wasn’t overly keen when everyone was naming their children [name_f]Sienna[/name_f].

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] ~ I have tried so hard to like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and I can completely see the appeal in the name however all I see is lice I also have strong negative connotations with this name which doesn’t help with my negativity towards the name.

[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] ~ translates awkwardly around the world so puts me off

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

There are hardly any of your names that I truly dislike so may not be too much help but let’s see. I will however note any drawbacks I see even with names I love or like, things I would consider in my own process of elimination to help narrow down a list to the perfect name.

 = love
:white_check_mark: = like
:palm_down_hand: = ok, so-so
:-1: = dislike

[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - bold in its simplicity. A smart, no-nonsense name that, despite being so incredibly familiar, would stand out a mile today among a sea of ubiquitous frillier options. There’s a confidence in using something so understated, this name doesn’t need bells on. Suits all ages / personality types. The one drawback is the ‘plain Jane’ thing, but this wouldn’t be enough to bother me personally. I don’t think it’s a significant phrase / association amongst the younger generation.

[name_f]Kate[/name_f] - similar feelings to [name_f]Jane[/name_f], but with more elegance. [name_u]Love[/name_u] this as a stand-alone (don’t like [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - nothing wrong with it, just pt).

[name_f]Mairi[/name_f] - love this pronounced mah-ry which is how it’s said where I’m from, not maw-ry which I find unattractive. So the self-evident pronunciation issues would put me off personally (notwithstanding people who will inevitably pronounce phonetically as [name_f]Mary[/name_f] - there’ll be a lot of correction).

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] - would be so sweet and refreshing used today.

[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] - love the sound and look of [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] but its meaning in several European countries would defs be enough to put me off. If the child is a world traveller I wouldn’t want a name that raised sniggers. It’s a shame as I love this but this fact would personally help me with the elimination process.

:white_check_mark:

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] - I find this quite beautiful in all respects, look, sound and vibe, but the inevitable shortening to the much less sparkly [name_f]Jen[/name_f] / [name_f]Jenny[/name_f] puts me off.

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - as classic and regal as it comes. What puts me off is the huge array of potential diminutives. Unless you heavily push your preferred shortened form to the point where it almost renders the complete name pointless, or unless you love every / the majority of the intuitive diminutives, you’re likely to end up with something you dislike. For example, I really dislike [name_f]Liz[/name_f] / [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] which is probably the most intuitive nn of them all.

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - this is beautiful and underrused now. I also like the diminutive [name_u]Lou[/name_u], but if you don’t I wouldn’t consider this. It’s also a very feminine name that I couldn’t see on a tomboy, though [name_u]Lou[/name_u] or [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] would mitigate this.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - simple and classic, but also has a certain feistiness, fortitude and intrepidness to it from the [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland character. [name_m]Easy[/name_m] to wear. Can’t really go wrong.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - zippy, spunky, peppy, but also has a kind of wayward, leftfield classic thing going on from the Ancient Greek origins.

[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - really like this, was on my own list. I ultimately eliminated for a couple of reasons - I detest [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and was worried about it being shortened to this, and its slight prissiness from the Austenesque regency vibes. It’s just a little too ‘clean’, buttoned-up and prim for me personally, my perfect name would have a touch of wild beauty / ruggedness. If you like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] then obviously this intuitive diminutive isn’t an issue.

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - again really like, but similarly to [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] just a touch too buttoned up and prim for me personally to be my idea of ‘perfect’. I definitely get bespectacled piano teacher vibes from this, which is definitely not a bad thing. Don’t like [name_f]Hattie[/name_f].

:palm_down_hand:

[name_u]Florence[/name_u] - absolutely nothing wrong with it, used to love it, was put off due to ubiquity. [name_f]Flo[/name_f] is cute. Doesn’t set my world alight.

[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - ok, sweet but just so common. A little juvenile.

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - I don’t really get the hype around this name. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the lit and legend associations, but I find the actual sound a bit wet and drippy.

[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - just a bit meh. I don’t feel anything strong about it which is almost worse than strongly disliking. Has nothing about it imo. Nothing wrong with it though, just pt.

:-1:

[name_u]Blythe[/name_u] - I just find everything about this name - look, sound and vibe - unappealing. The actual meaning is lovely but that doesn’t transfer to the vibe for me personally. I’m very much in the minority with this though, it’s beloved on here.

[name_f]Sienna[/name_f] - I really, really dislike this. Far too pretty princessy for my tastes.

[name_f]Polly[/name_f] - I just think of plastics (polythene), and similar sciency words / products such as Polyfilla. If it wasn’t for this association I’d like it.

@Lula-Rose Hahaha that was just a typo :joy:. We pronounce it MAH-ry too. Again, I love what you said about [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

If you are in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], then feel free to use [name_u]Florence[/name_u]. It would be in my “TOP 6” list too, actually third.

I am sorry! I thought you were in the UK. (Maybe I confused you with someone else)

Oh gosh, no need to apologize!

  1. Which of these names are your favourites, and why? [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to give them a rating out of ten.

blythe - i feel like this name is a lot more underrated than it seems, a unique sound and soft without being frilly !

mairi - love mairi, the only issue i can think of is initial pronunciation issues. do you like mari ?

alice - super sweet and a classic, though it seems the most popular on your list (if that’s something that would bother you)

eliza - quirky yet familiar, i love ‘z’ in names !

phoebe - reminds me of the character in friends, timeless and friendly

esther - straightforward and would suit someone of any age and personality

  1. What combos would you suggest with the names you chose? Middle(s) could be either from our list or your imagination.

blythe louisa
mairi florence
alice genevieve
eliza maeve

esther daisy

  1. What nicknames could be used for the names/combo(s)? (Nicknames are really important in our family!)
