HELP Is there a name that meet all our silly criteria for girl #3?

Ok. We simply cannot decide on a name for our 3rd daughter. We have some weird criteria which I think makes the whole thing frustrating!! So here are the details… help!

Our first daughter’s name is Finley and our second daughter’s name is Josephine (Jo, Josie, JoJo). I feel like this kicks off the struggle since the two names are not the same style! Would love to find something that balances that two names instead of making one feel like the “odd name out.” (For example… if we went with something like Rowan then Josephine seems like the old fashioned one of the bunch… if we went with something like Hazel, Finley feels odd for the group)

We LOVE nicknames so prefer names with 2-3 syllables that shorten into intuitive nicknames. (For example… my husband liked Samantha that goes directly to Sam/Sami. I liked Audrey with the nn Addie but he didn’t like how that nn wasn’t intuitive for the full name.)

We like names that you know how to say properly when you read them… and know how to spell properly when you hear them. (For example… we liked the name Elena and Liana… but know there would be confusing and potential discrepancy with how to spell and how to pronounce).

It’s important to us that the name has a great meaning. We are Christian so love if the name reflects that in some capacity but otherwise something that is strong and virtuous is lovely too.

We don’t want a name that is TOO popular

Lastly… we prefer names that do not end in k/g and my husband likes names with more than 4 letters (don’t ask me why lol)

Does the perfect name exist??!? We are struggling, why must we be so weird and picky??

[name_f]Brooklyn[/name_f] comes to mind.

[name_f]Finley[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Brooklyn[/name_f]

I think it fits well with your criteria. -lyn is inline with [name_f]Finley[/name_f], and [name_f]Brook[/name_f]- with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. [name_f]Brook[/name_f] isn’t a bad nickname too.

[name_f]Winona[/name_f] might also be a good one, [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] for short.

I do think going with a name with the fin & phine sound would tie the three together.

I thought about “f” names like [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] or [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] so that at least the f/ph sound is between all three but don’t love any of the name I found!

I happen to LOVE brooklyn and brook but then realized another dumb criteria… our last name ends “lyn” so it sounds a bit jumbled!

Thank you for your suggestions!!

Okay let me take a stab at this! Balances Finley & Josephine, 2+ syllables that shorten into an intuitive nickname, little to no pronunciation / spelling ambiguity, a good meaning, do not end in k or g, more than 4 letters. Here we go…

Adelaide / Adele “Addie” - “noble”
Angelica “Angie” - “angel”
Angelina “Angie, Lina” - “angel”
Celeste “Cece” - “heavenly”
Christine / Christina / Christiana “Chris, Tine, Tina, Chrissy” - “follower of Christ”
Clarissa / Clarice “Clare, Clara, Rissa” - “bright, clear”
Gabrielle “Gabby, Bree, Elle / Ellie” - “God is my strength”
Geneva “Gen, Ginny, Neve” - “juniper tree”
Elaine “El, Ellie, Lainey” - “bright, shining light”
Elise “El, Lise” - “pledged to God”
Eloise “Elle / Ellie” - “healthy, wide”
Estelle / Estella “Stella” - “star”
Florence “Flo, Flora, Flossie” - “flourishing”
Lenora “Leni, Nora” - “light”
Leona “Leah” - “lioness”
Lucille “Lucy” - “light”
Marigold “Mari, Goldie” - “golden flower”
Meredith “Meri” - “great ruler”
Minerva “Minnie” - “intellect”
Miranda “Mira, Andie, Randi” - “marvelous”
Olivia “Liv” - “olive tree”

This is awesome thank you!! [name_m]Loving[/name_m] [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and Celeste… need to run those my the husband!

I know there has to be a name out there but my goodness it feels like we have veto’d a billion of them!! Hard to think there are any left lol!

I like [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f]!

I also love [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] but always wonder if it’s supposed to be spelt [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] or [name_f]Lylah[/name_f] or [name_f]Lila[/name_f].

Someone else mentioned [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and I like it… is it most on the old fashioned side though as far as balance?

The tough answer here is that they are all correct. [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] ranks on the SSA list at 105, [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] at 219, [name_f]Lila[/name_f] at 221, and [name_f]Lylah[/name_f] is the least common at 589 (and personally is the only one I haven’t seen used in real life yet). So while [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] is used the most, it isn’t incredibly dominant, and I would not be the least bit surprised by [name_f]Lila[/name_f] (the one I’ve seen the most) or [name_f]Lilah[/name_f].

I’m under the impression that [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is the most traditional spelling, but also has the qualm of having a variant pronunciation of Lee-la.

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is an old name with historical usage but is actually at its highest point in the US for usage! It’s not modern and inventive like [name_f]Finley[/name_f] but I don’t think it would be perceived as old-fashioned.

Very interesting! Thank you for sharing!

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought for you was [name_f]Marina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mara[/name_f] or [name_f]Rina[/name_f]. It means “From the sea” which is quite beautiful!

I actually really like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] in this set. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is sleek and fun like [name_f]Finley[/name_f], but also has old fashioned roots like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

other good names that bridge the two:

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] “Nora/Ella”
[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] “Marli, Lola”
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f]
[name_f]Emerson[/name_f]
[name_f]Cadence[/name_f]
[name_f]Hadley[/name_f]
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Valerie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]

biblical -
[name_f]Alora[/name_f] / [name_f]Elora[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Selah[/name_f] - love this one with your names, pronunciation could get tricky
[name_f]Elisha[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] “Evie, etc”

[name_f]Finley[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and…

[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_m]Wren[/name_m]
[name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]
[name_f]James[/name_f]
[name_m]Lucca[/name_m]
[name_f]Peace[/name_f]
Scarlet-Rose
[name_f]Juniper[/name_f]
[name_m]Taylor[/name_m]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Quinn[/name_f]
[name_f]Grainne[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Dove[/name_f]
[name_f]Arianwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Carrie[/name_f]
[name_f]Robin[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Shirley[/name_f]
[name_f]Cilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Spencer[/name_f]
[name_f]George[/name_f]
[name_f]Ashley[/name_f]
[name_f]Fox[/name_f]
[name_f]Snow[/name_f]
[name_f]Clover[/name_f]
[name_f]Clove[/name_f]
[name_f]Noa[/name_f]

There’s several different spellings so you could always pick the one that you think is best!

Hmmm. It is indeed very tough to find a name that will go well with both [name_f]Finley[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] because [name_f]Finley[/name_f] is very modern and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is very vintage. [name_f]My[/name_f] best thought would be to choose a name that has existed for a long time but only became popular recently. Some suggestions are:
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f] (Sam)
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f] (Vanna)
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
and
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]

I hope this helps.
