I’m trying to name a male character for a fairytale retelling. [name_f]My[/name_f] thought is that everyone in this story is named after a plant, but it’s been trickier to find the right names for male characters. This character’s name should feel sharp and snappy, and not too out of place for a setting farther back in time. I would love if it could reference roses or apples, but that combo might not exist. Any suggestions, or feedback on ideas so far, would be much appreciated!
Ideas so far (some of these feel doable but none of them fully fit):
[name_f]Aster[/name_f]
Avens
[name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_m]Calix[/name_m]
[name_f]Fiori[/name_f] (I like the sound of this one, but might be too cute/feminine?)
[name_m]Floris[/name_m]
[name_m]Foxglove[/name_m] (maybe [name_m]Fox[/name_m] for short)
Gentian
[name_f]Indigo[/name_f]
[name_m]Malus[/name_m]
[name_m]Pyrus[/name_m]
Quickthorn
[name_m]Quince[/name_m] (the meaning of this would be perfect and the vibe would fit well with other characters, but somehow I don’t really like the sound and I’m not sure why)
Zephyranthes
I know this is old, but I LOVE doing plant/nature names! recently wrote a thing where in the first draft I wanted both the characters to have nature names because of the themes of the story, but then I gave up, you know how it goes. if you want it to reference apples, my first thought was Macintosh…not a huge fan of the name but it’s got the vibes. also recently heard the name Braeburn, which is another kind of apple…only previously heard it as a surname and it feels a little odd, but maybe with nickname potential? also [name_m]Calin[/name_m] – similar to [name_m]Calix[/name_m], has the connotation of roses through a linguistics thing I don’t fully grasp, and in my opinion feels kind of plant-y? idk. also, re. fiori – personally it doesn’t seem too feminine? what it reminds me of is [name_m]Fiyero[/name_m] from Wicked, haha, so maybe it’s just that. [name_f][/name_f]best of luck if you haven’t already figured it out, though!
Ooh I’m intrigued by [name_m]Călin[/name_m]. That also gets me to Viburnum, which could be an interesting choice. And I like [name_f]Rosen[/name_f].
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Quince[/name_m] has continued to grow on me, but I’m still not completely sold on the sound. I’ve also started considering [name_m]Bael[/name_m] as in bael fruit.
I don’t see [name_m]Coriander[/name_m], that would’ve been my suggestion [name_f][/name_f]It could even shorten to [name_m]Cory[/name_m] if you want a more ‘typical’ name to go by
