DH is set on the name [name]Leroy[/name] for our 3rd boy. I know there are stereotypes associated with the name in the US, but feel that here in Australia in our country town it’s not an issue. I teach a little boy named [name]Leroy[/name] and he is lovely and has made me like the name. I don’t ‘love’ it, but I do think it would suit our boys, and is a very boyish name.
But I want to find something else if I can! It has to be a boyish name - DH is really hard to please and he doesn’t like many of my suggestions! ([name]Finn[/name], [name]Hamish[/name] and [name]Arlo[/name] are my faves)
Would love some ideas! It’s got to be a little bit different, but nothing made up!
A point of view from another Aussie. If I heard that a child in Australia was named [name]Leroy[/name] I would assume that he was American with parents who came from a kind of hill billy area in the U.S. I don’t think it would be very popular here in [name]Oz[/name].
If you like Scottish names why not follow that path? I think that your suggestion of [name]Hamish[/name] is terrific and then there are these to choose from also
Thanks for those suggestions, DH has pretty much already said no to all of them. I think I will try and push a bit more for [name]Hamish[/name], I really love it.
Thanks for your input [name]Rollo[/name], I wonder if other Aussie’s agree?
I forgot to mention I also like Irish names as our surname is Irish.
While I’m not Australian I have lived here for nine years and I don’t get a hillbilly vibe from [name]Leroy[/name] at all. I would think American but would think of it more as a black, cool name - maybe because I am thinking of [name]Leroy[/name] from Fame! I just ran it past my husband and he said he thinks footballer or DJ so certainly no hillbilly associations in this house.
[name]Leo[/name] came to mind when you said [name]Leroy[/name] and also [name]Leon[/name].
I do prefer your choices though and like [name]Hamish[/name] especially. [name]Angus[/name] is another nice Scottish name and is masculine and boyish enough to please your DH hopefully.
I’m Australian, and I don’t get a hillbilly vibe, I asked hubby and he says he pictures a rad little dude wearing dark sunnies lol. (men!)
I know A LOT of [name]Hamish[/name]'s, it is a lovely name and I think I prefer it, but I wouldn’t throw [name]Leroy[/name] out for the reason of ‘hillbilly vibe’
Would you like [name]Leroy[/name] more if you planned to call your son either [name]Lee[/name] or [name]Roy[/name]? Or would your husband be ok with using one of those two names instead of [name]Leroy[/name]?
What about [name]Conroy[/name]? Or [name]Royce[/name]?
Unlike me my husband is very decisive (which I’m jealous of as I can never make up my mind!) he doesn’t like variations, he just wants [name]Leroy[/name]. I hate that I’m so indecisive, and I can be so easily swayed by people’s oppinions. This is what puts me off [name]Leroy[/name], it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and then the whole hillbilly thing also. It’s not that I personally don’t like the name, I think it’s kind of cool, I just worry about other people’s oppinions.
I don’t think I can find anything that will come cose to [name]Leroy[/name] for DH! He doesn’t mind [name]Eddie[/name], but I would probably rather [name]Leroy[/name] than [name]Eddie[/name]!
[name]Leroy[/name] isn’t really my style but I don’t get a hillbilly vibe (but I know what you mean - I’m from down under too). I’d go with [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Leon[/name] if you want something similar. What are the names of your other boys? That will help you get more suggestions
If it’s just other people’s opinions putting you off then don’t worry about it. They can name THEIR kids whatever they like, you and your DH get to name yours and if others don’t approve it’s tough! But, if you feel that your husband’s certainty is swaying you then you should stand your ground and find something you both absolutely love. Liking isn’t enough when naming your precious child I think.
