I am expecting a baby in February and I have been making lists and narrowing down choices and was feeling pretty good about it. But the other day I had a dream that the baby was born now and I hadn’t picked a name (this isn’t actually a big deal, almost all of my baby dreams revolve around baby not having a name) but I got to thinking, “Which name would I pick if I had to name baby today?” and when I went through my lists I felt pretty good still about my girl choices but NONE of my boy choices felt right. Its not that I don’t LIKE the names, its more like they just don’t seem to fit. I hate to throw the whole thing away and just start over, so I’m really looking for some help/suggestions!
Criteria:
Our last name starts with a K and is one syllable. It is also quite abrupt sounding, so I would prefer to not have any 1 syllable names or names that are really K sound heavy. A name that starts with a K sound is ok, but when it’s at the middle or the end of a name I find it clashes with our last name.
My daughter’s name is [name]Ainslea[/name] [name]Elenore[/name] ([name]Elenore[/name] is for my grandmother), so a name that goes well with that would be great.
I’m not a fan of “classic” names like [name]Robert[/name] or [name]James[/name] etc, just not my style.
Also, my husband’s middle name is [name]Andrew[/name], and I think it would be great to use as a middle name, but it isn’t a must have, I’d much rather have a first name I love.
Congratulations on your baby! Are you finding out the gender?
I think a liquid, vowel-rich, 2-syllable name will work best with last name “[name]Kurt[/name].” Focus on finding something similar to [name]Ainslea[/name]. All your choices are very nice; here are some suggestions in a similar style:
I have a thing for the name [name]Ezra[/name] lately, so that gets my vote! Maybe [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Drew[/name] since [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Andrew[/name] doesn’t have best flow?
We are not finding out the gender. It would be much easier to choose a name if we did, but we found out the gender last time, with our daughter, and we thought we would try it the other way this time around.
My thoughts on your suggestions:
[name]Brody[/name] - not bad, but I don’t love it.
[name]Finlay[/name] - same.
[name]Callum[/name] - too… Scottish? Irish?
[name]Ian[/name] - this doesn’t really sound good with LN
[name]Liam[/name] - too popular. It’s actually number 1 where I live.
[name]Niall[/name] (pr. [name]Nile[/name]) - too English?
[name]Owen[/name] - Sounds like [name]Rowan[/name]… I like it.
[name]Aaron[/name] - known too many of these.
[name]Elijah[/name] - I like this.
[name]Josiah[/name] - I like this too, but a friend has a little boy named [name]Josiah[/name].
[name]Tobias[/name] - Again I like but something isn’t quite right?
[name]Julian[/name] - [name]Kinda[/name] really like this one, but I have a feeling husband will not.
[name]Milo[/name] - cute
[name]Everett[/name] - I like it.
[name]Emory[/name] - is this girly?
[name]Quincy[/name] - my mom suggested this and my husband made a “yuck” face…
[name]Landon[/name] - its ok.
I don’t really like the three syllable ones as much. I don’t know what it is, just none of them really appealed to me. (except [name]Adrian[/name], which I love, BUT my [name]SIL[/name] is [name]Adrienne[/name] and that would be too awkward.)
Thanks again for your help. I’ll take any other suggestions or possible combos on the names that I have (that might help me love them more)
Husband’s favourites are [name]Asher[/name] and [name]Titus[/name]
I kinda like the way [name]Ainslea[/name] and [name]Ezra[/name] sound together. [name]Drew[/name] is a good idea for a middle name, I hadn’t thought of that, but do you think it sounds ok with a 1 syllable last name?
[name]Elias[/name] - have a friend who just had a baby named this. it’s a cool name though.
[name]Leander[/name] - maybe, I kinda like it.
[name]Arlo[/name] - I like this!
[name]Ari[/name] - too short maybe?
[name]Graham[/name] - this sounds old to me.
[name]Asa[/name] - again, maybe too short.
[name]Eamon[/name] - I don’t really like this, but can’t put my finger on why, sorry.
You liked [name]Owen[/name], [name]Elijah[/name], [name]Julian[/name] and [name]Milo[/name]; and [name]Arlo[/name]. Your strongest reactions were to [name]Milo[/name] and [name]Arlo[/name]-- perhaps you’d like some more of those cool Continental -o names?
[name]Arvo[/name] (“value, worth”)
[name]Valo[/name] (Finnish for ‘sky’)
[name]Nico[/name] (Continental form of [name]Nicholas[/name])
[name]Benno[/name] (“bear”)
[name]Marlowe[/name] (the playwright)
[name]Enzo[/name] (as in Ferrari)
[name]Marco[/name] (smoooooth form of [name]Mark[/name])
[name]Rico[/name]
[name]Timo[/name] (Finnish form of [name]Timothy[/name])
[name]Viggo[/name] (as in Mortensen)
Like [name]Asher[/name] and [name]Titus[/name] (biblical rarities):
blade - I ran the last round of names past husband and he does NOT like the O ending names, so unfortunately I think those are out.
I do like [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name] and [name]Levi[/name], and [name]Jude[/name] was on our list too but we weren’t sure about how it sounded with the 1 syllable last name? We considered [name]Judah[/name] too (it was actually our top pick for our boys name when we had our daughter) but I was thinking it’s maybe too Jewish (and we are not) and I don’t want to be disrespectful, or use names that are strongly associated with a specific culture that we aren’t a part of. Does that make sense? Biblical names are ok, we are [name]Christian[/name], but [name]Judah[/name] feels more Jewish than just Biblical. I guess.
sheflies- What names would you use as middles for those as firsts? I feel like maybe if I saw some great combos with the first names on our lists maybe it would make me fall in love with the whole name instead of just seeing the partial ones and feeling lukewarm about it. You know what I mean?
I agree with you re: [name]Jude[/name] and a monosyllabic last name. I also think [name]Judah[/name] is by its very definition Jewish (Yehud = Jew, it’s where we get Yiddish, ‘yid’, Jew, [name]Yehudah[/name]…). So [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Titus[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Elijah[/name] are the short list?
[name]Stellan[/name]
[name]Grady[/name]
[name]Davis[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Damian[/name]
[name]Jackson[/name] (popular, but I like it with your daughter’s name)
[name]Dexter[/name]
[name]Lochlan[/name]
[name]Julius[/name]
[name]Harris[/name]
[name]Lennox[/name]
