The only name we can semi-agree on if this baby is a girl is the name [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. Neither of us love it, but neither of us hate it. I thought I loved the nickname [name_f]Greta[/name_f], but lately, it seems too harsh and different from [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] “[name_u]Kit[/name_u]”, the baby’s big sister. [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] don’t seem quite right, but neither do [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] or [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
Can you help me love [name_f]Greta[/name_f] or give any suggestions to go with [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] “[name_u]Kit[/name_u]”?
Some quick suggestions:
Ret/[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]/Rett, [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], [name_f]Martie[/name_f], [name_m]Artie[/name_m] are one the more tomboy-ish side like [name_u]Kit[/name_u].
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] are also options by meaning.
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]/[name_f]Margot[/name_f] sound nice with [name_u]Kit[/name_u].
[name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]/[name_f]Etta[/name_f]/Ette and [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] could also work.
I’m not too sure how to help you love [name_f]Greta[/name_f] as I don’t particularly love it as it isn’t my style.
Watching films/reading books with a character named [name_f]Greta[/name_f] might help.
The name itself has a very 1950s feel to me and I picture a stereotypical young woman of that era (think like [name_u]Sandy[/name_u] from Grease) so maybe associating it more with that might help (watching films set in the 1950’s etc). Or you could own it’s harshness and steer more towards the spunkier 1950’s woman (so looking more like Rizzo from Grease).
I personally prefer [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] to [name_f]Greta[/name_f] (sorry, I know that that is super unhelpful!!!), but my favorite nn for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is so adorable and goes really nicely with [name_u]Kit[/name_u]!
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] also seems quite harsh to me, especially for a baby. I think it’s mostly because the only [name_f]Greta[/name_f] I’ve ever heard of is the American news commentator [name_f]Greta[/name_f] [name_u]Van[/name_u] Susteren, and she’s my immediate and only association.
I think if you need someone to help you love your potential baby’s name, then it’s not the right name for you.
I can see [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as sisters, it’s a very sweet sibset. I also like above suggestion of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. I love [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f]! If not [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn [name_f]Greta[/name_f]/[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]/[name_f]Margot[/name_f], how about:
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - myriad of nicknames here: [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Liz[/name_f], etc.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]/[name_f]Josephina[/name_f] - [name_u]Josie[/name_u], [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_u]Jojo[/name_u] ([name_u]Kit[/name_u] & [name_u]Jo[/name_u] or [name_u]Kit[/name_u] & [name_u]Josie[/name_u] is so sweet!)
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_u]Tris[/name_u]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - [name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] - [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] (Also love [name_u]Kit[/name_u] & [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]!)
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - [name_f]Flo[/name_f], [name_f]Florrie[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - [name_u]Lou[/name_u]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_u]Cory[/name_u], [name_f]Delia[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] - [name_f]Gen[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], [name_f]Genny[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] sounds really catchy! Really it does, to me.
And I’m thinking down the line if ‘[name_u]Kit[/name_u]’ becomes ‘[name_f]Kathy[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_f]Kitty[/name_f]’, it would still sound good. [name_f]Kathy[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f], etc etc.
They fit. All of them.
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] has so many great nicknames!
With sister [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] ‘[name_u]Kit[/name_u]’, my two favourite options are [name_f]Meg[/name_f] and growing-on-me-everyday vintage option [name_f]Peggy[/name_f]. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Meta[/name_f], [name_f]Marit[/name_f], and [name_f]Rita[/name_f] are also nicknames or diminutives of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] that are less well known among English-speakers than [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] today, and might have more appeal if [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] have lost their shine for you?
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] is actually my current favorite, so I’m more inclined to talk you out of it so it doesn’t become more popular What about [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] with [name_u]Kit[/name_u]? [name_u]Kit[/name_u] has kind of a spunky sweet vibe and I think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mae[/name_f] goes perfectly with that. [name_f]Greta[/name_f] I think of [name_f]Greta[/name_f] [name_f]Garbo[/name_f] or [name_f]Greta[/name_f] Gerwig, so Hollywood vibe, and it has a [name_m]German[/name_m]/European edge, while [name_u]Kit[/name_u] feels vintage English/American.
What about [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f]?
