Help me love Penelope!

My husband and I cannot agree on girls names. The only name we have mutual love for is [name]Penny[/name], and he’s fine with [name]Penelope[/name] or just putting [name]Penny[/name] on the birth certificate. But I can’t give my kid a nickname with no other options. I go by [name]Jen[/name], but love having a full name to fall back on. I am finding it hard to get into [name]Penelope[/name] though, and am a bit concerned that people will think I copied a Kardashian.

Our combination is [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Michaela[/name] (after my dad [name]Michael[/name])… What do you think? We find out the gender next week, so this might be a moot point, but it bothers me that we’re having such a hard time with this!

If your only concern is that people will think you’re following a Kardashian, I’d say push that concern out of your mind and go for it. It’s a gorgeous name and no one should keep you from using a name you love.

BUT, if you don’t like it, don’t use it. This your baby and if she is indeed a she, you should love her name. An alternative is [name]Penrose[/name] (but I would urge that [name]Penelope[/name] is the prettier choice).

Oh but plum jo… [name]Penrose[/name] is kinda really cool…

I soooooo wouldn’t let the Kardashians stop you from using a name. But if you’re still looking for options I ran across:

Penthea
[name]Penina[/name]
Peoney
[name]Persephone[/name]

that could all work as full names for [name]Penny[/name]. But personally, if you and your husband can both agree on [name]Penelope[/name] I’d go for it! That name has been around a lot longer than the Kardashians.

[name]Don[/name]'t let the Kardashians stop you from using a name you like! [name]Penelope[/name] is a great name. The only problem is see is that your name is [name]Jen[/name], which rhymes with [name]Pen[/name] / [name]Penny[/name], common nicknames for [name]Penelope[/name]. You could get around this with the nicknames Lo, [name]Nell[/name], [name]Nellie[/name], [name]Elle[/name], or [name]Ellie[/name] though.

Thanks for the encouragement. I know it rhymes with [name]Jen[/name], but we still love [name]Penny[/name] specifically. I grew up in a house with [name]Jan[/name], [name]Jen[/name] and [name]Jon[/name], so [name]Jen[/name] and [name]Penny[/name] (and I don’t think we’d go to “[name]Pen[/name]”) is actually not that bad.

We’ve looked for other names to get to [name]Penny[/name] but nothing has stood out. I just haven’t had the same enthusiasm for [name]Penelope[/name] as I’ve felt for other names!

I’ve recently been listening to an album called [name]Penelope[/name], it’s a song cycle that’s a collaboration between composer [name]Sarah[/name] Kirkland Snider, playwright [name]Ellen[/name] [name]McLaughlin[/name] and singer [name]Shara[/name] [name]Worden[/name] (My Brightest [name]Diamond[/name]) along with chamber orchestra Signal. It’s enchantingly beautiful and has completely wiped away any Kardashian connection and made me love the name more than I ever have before. It tells the story of a woman whose husband comes home from 20 years in an unnamed war, brain damaged and a different person. She reads him the Odyssey and through that coaxes him back to the life they once had. It’s a work of art if you’re into that sort of thing. Magnificent ^^ I found it on Spotify, maybe you have acess?
I would suggest seeking out alternative references and connections. You’re not going to suddenly change your mind about the sound, so it has to be other things that bring you around. Another [name]Penelope[/name] is [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Garcia[/name] from Criminal Minds. She’s wonderful as well

Another [name]Pen[/name]- name that hasn’t been mentioned is Penthesileia, but I doubt you like it more. I also have a soft spot for Pennyroyal, but that’s not really anything to fall back on like [name]Penelope[/name] would be ^^ You could also use a [name]Pan[/name]- name? [name]Pandora[/name] is sweet, and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to call her [name]Penny[/name]. [name]Patience[/name]?

I’m actually a musician and music teacher, so the arts connection would be fabulous, I’m going to try to find that album!

We looked at other P names to use and though I liked a few better, my husband finds most of them to be too much. I’m surprised he even likes [name]Penelope[/name], it’s way more name than he’s usually into and his preference is for 80s names.
