Help me pick a new name?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there. I know this is going to be a kind of odd topic, but I’d really like some help picking a new name. I’m transitioning to male, and I want a male name to match my gender.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Alayna[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], nicknamed Laynie because I’ve never liked [name_f]Alayna[/name_f] anyways. I also have an older brother named [name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_u]Aubry[/name_u] and I’d love for my name to go with his. I feel pretty uncomfortable asking my mom for help picking a new name because we don’t have the same taste and she’ll try to get me to choose a name that isn’t “me” but that she likes.
So here are the names I’ve got on my list:
[name_u]Blaine[/name_u]- similar to my name/nickname already and would be easy for people to start calling me
[name_u]Campbell[/name_u]- family surname that is unisex and can have the nickname [name_u]Cam[/name_u] which is okay
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]- I like it, but it’s very different from my name already. Also is it trendy? Would it work for someone born in 1998?
[name_u]Matty[/name_u]- nickname for [name_m]Mathew[/name_m] that I’ve liked for a long time but I don’t think it fits with my brother’s name

I was wondering if you guys would be willing to help me out with opinions on my list and also more suggestions? Thank you in advance!

I like all three choices. If it is just down to a name [name_u]Campbell[/name_u] “[name_u]Cam[/name_u]” is my favorite but you know you best.

Have you considered [name_u]Lane[/name_u]?

I also wouldn’t discount talking to your mom, you might be surprised by her ideas and it isn’t like she can force you to take her choice.

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f] to Nameberry! Transitioning to another gender can be rough so I hope you have a great support system of family and friends. I like [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] and [name_m]Miles[/name_m] on your list and I think they go well with [name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_u]Aubry[/name_u]. Perhaps you could use [name_u]Campbell[/name_u] as a mn since it has family significance? I don’t know your surname so I’ll give suggestions in the dark. Your brother’s name is unisex so here are some similar names with the same vibe (mainly unisex, Celtic or surnames as first names). Good luck to you!

I agree that you might want to reconsider talking to your mom. Moms do surprise their children at times…ask my son. I especially love [name_m]Miles[/name_m] and [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] from your list. I really like [name_u]Campbell[/name_u] and [name_u]Cam[/name_u]. [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] seems dull to me, except I do like [name_u]Matty[/name_u].

[name_u]Devon[/name_u] and -

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], here are a few suggestions, although I love [name_u]Blaine[/name_u], wouldn’t it be too easy for ppl to just keep calling you Laynie??. These are a few names that might work for you
[name_m]Devlin[/name_m]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_u]Cameron[/name_u]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u]
[name_u]Aiden[/name_u]
[name_m]Landon[/name_m]
[name_u]Leland[/name_u]
[name_u]Chase[/name_u]
[name_m]Breccan[/name_m]
[name_m]Tanner[/name_m]
[name_m]Caden[/name_m]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_m]Ryder[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_u]Alex[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Darren[/name_u]

It’s sometimes hard for people to start calling people by different names, so Blaine would be a good choice as well as Lane, but it shouldn’t be something that holds you back to finding the right name for you. I think that Matthew fits very well with Devon, as they’re both modern though with a classic feel, and if it’s something that has held your interest for a long time, then it’s probably a good pick. Personally Campbell is my favourite.
Other names that go with Devon are:
Adam
Benjamin
Caleb
Daniel
Isaac
James
Jensen
Jonathan
Joseph
Michael
Nicholas
Samuel
Thomas
William

Here are some suggestions. Since you already got some great ideas I will keep it brief.

[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m]
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
[name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_m]Gavin[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]
[name_m]Terrence[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]

Good luck with this transition. [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] sounds great with [name_u]Devon[/name_u] in my opinion, and [name_m]Miles[/name_m] is also an excellent name. Perhaps you could approach your mother with a ready-made list for her to help you narrow your choices? That way she would only work with names you like, but also participate and support you.

First off, congrats on taking the leap and making this transition! I’ve had a few friends go through this and it’s such a massive thing. I definitely appluad your courage

[name_u]Blaine[/name_u] is a lovely name, and it’s nice how it’s similar to your current legal name. It’s also the name of one of my favourite fictional characters (his name is [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] [name_u]Devon[/name_u], funny huh?)

I’m not a huge fan of [name_u]Campbell[/name_u] but I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Miles[/name_m]. I don’t think it’s too trendy for someone your age

[name_u]Matty[/name_u] is great, and I think it works with [name_u]Devon[/name_u].

Here a few more I like that go with [name_u]Devon[/name_u]:
[name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_m]Austin[/name_m]
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Cooper[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Foster[/name_m]
[name_u]Grady[/name_u]
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_u]Lane[/name_u]
[name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_u]Seth[/name_u]
[name_u]Toby[/name_u]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]

I feel like when you find your name, you’ll just know. It’ll just feel like ‘you’.
Best of luck!

I love this idea. As a mom, I think I could feel hurt by my “baby” changing their name, for whatever reason. It would be nice to be included in part of the process.

Thank you all so much for all of the suggestions! I’m finding them really helpful in creating a list that I like.
When I’ve talked about changing my name before, my mom and I agreed that maybe [name_u]Campbell[/name_u] would be a nice new last name since no one seems to pronounce my current last name right. So maybe I could use her idea for a last name and my own idea for a first, and maybe compromise on a middle? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that would make her feel more included in the choice? Because I’m really afraid of being pressured into another name that doesn’t really suit me.

I think that sounds like a great idea. If you feel she is starting to push names on you or not listening to your wants and wishes, kindly tell her. Let her know that you would like her to be involved but if you feel pushed that you will not be able to involve her. I do not know how your mom is. As a mom, I wouldn’t want to be TELLING my child what names to use (we all have our own likes and dislikes and it is not my place to dictate someone else’s likes), just wanting him to be able to come to me to talk about it. I would not push a name, and I would only say absolutely not, if the name was really awful (like Hitler, Buttface, etc - which I assume my son would never suggest ;)). Okay I have rambled long enough.

Hey, congrats on your transition!

I like [name_u]Blaine[/name_u], and I like that it’s similar to your female name but also distinctly different. But that could also be points against it if you’re looking for something completely different.

I also really like [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] with [name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_u]Aubry[/name_u] - they’re all typically male names but sometimes used on girls/slightly gender-ambiguous. If you’re looking for a new middle name too, [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] [name_u]Campbell[/name_u] is great.
