Help me understand names ending in -line

I did an internet search and couldn’t find the answer to my question…
What does adding -line to the end of a name do to the meaning of the name? Where did the -line ending come from? what is its origin? and most importantly, what does it mean?

For example…
Carol —> Caroline
Pearl —> Pearline
etc.

Sound of Music just popped in my head… fräulein … could it come from the Germans and simply mean girl/miss?

Typically it’s a way to create feminine versions of masculine names, [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] one of the feminine version of [name_u]Charles[/name_u], [name_f]Jaqueline[/name_f] is the feminine version of [name_m]Jaques[/name_m], [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] is a fem version of [name_m]Paul[/name_m], etc. Really doesn’t have any specific meaning behind it, it’s pretty much the same thing as ending a name with an -a to make it feminine

Others nailed it. No meaning, just a [name_u]French[/name_u] way of making things feminine!
